Ah, yeah sorry for that. I was just giving Miso a bit of his own medicine.
Anyway, I voted for Sabbath. Meaner, heavier, they're Black! Although Zep is a better band overall I have realised over these last couple of months (even to Deep Purple), in the sense that they played more than rock, some great folky tunes and a couple of Proggy gems, as well as bloody great blues.
But when it comes to HARD ROCK, Sabbath and Purple burn Zeppelin.

I started to listen to Led Zeppelin when I was 15 years-old. Both my mother and my father bought the Remasters anthology and I used to borrow it from times to times. In fact, I didn't have to buy the records, since my parents bought them! Then, I discovered Black Sabbath nearly by myself (yet, my father had the Heavy Metal OST featuring "The Mob Rules" and two tracks from Sabotage on a tape).
I always listened to them (and Deep Purple! and BÖC! and Alice Cooper! and Mountain!) at the same rate, even if I feel closer to the topics of Sab'. But I can't prefer one band to the other. And, more important, you have to keep at least ONE thing in mind: they are better than Rush.
Way better.

LZ were clearly the more talented musicians and had, marginally, the better singer (yeah, let me just say it that Plant's not all that he's cracked up to be, influential but in his own right a rather average singer) but Sabbath got more out of their talent. The rambling, amorphous nature of many of LZ's songs is a sore point with me, I like rock music to be thoroughly composed and even where it has improvisations, to accommodate those appropriately rather than making the whole song a quasi-jam. Ultimately, I feel LZ's enormous talent by itself does not make for as compelling a reason to listen to their work as Sabbath. So, I vote for Sabbath.

what makes you think they would've made bad albums? As solo artists, all three remaining members did good albums and the collaboration Page & Plant was great. Based on this idea, i think they would not have messed things up, had Bonzo not died and had they made music together. My opinion.

Some solo albums by Robert Plant from 80´s are certainly weak - e.g. Shaken´n´ Stirred. Or, for sure, In Through The Out Door is controversial.
Goodness knows, how would be look their collective production in 80´s...

Funny, it's kind of the reverse for me. Like "Stairway to Heaven"...I never saw why that song was so great. Kashmir is amazing, though.

Sabbath. They had a jazz influence which gives them that cool swing. Zeppelin seem a bit rock n roll influenced which makes them less of a prog band. I also prefer Ozzy's voice over Plant and Iommi's guitar over Page. Zeps sound more outdated to me

not an expert on Sabbath but I suspect this is meant to be ironic.
For me Sabbath were actually a more unique band much more in keeping with their origins (Birmingham/Industrial). Always considered Bill Ward a very underrated drummer.
Zep did what Floyd did to some extent - reinvent Blues and crack America big time. I always feel its a bit 'second hand' as a result. That said Zep developed some more interesting ideas as time went on than Sabbath who just got stuck in a rut and died a bit of a death (until the Ronnie James Dio era to be fair)
I went for the both option but neither threaten my top ten fave bands.

The Zeps have a lot in their arsenal: 'Dazed and Confused', 'Whole Lotta Love', 'The Immigrant Song', the stairs, my personal favorite - the album "Houses of the Holy", 'In My Time of Dying', 'Ten Years Gone', ... . What does Sabbath have? 'Iron Man'? 'Paranoid'? My ears say they are dead to me. Besides, I find Jimmy's riffs more melodic, more ... alive than Tony's.

I might even have thought differently about this poll had Sabbath Bloody Sabbath not come along. Sabbath changed with that album. Some hardcore Sabbath fans will tell you that's where you get off with Sabbath but that's actually where they became gritty, not just scary in a sort of amusing way. They carried on with this in Sabotage and regained that edge much later with Dio in Dehumanizer. For that reason, I always felt their music was more powerful to me than Led Zeppelin's. Or Deep Purple for that matter. It took Sabbath some time but they eventually went beyond just rocking out and tried to emulate The Who.
|

Tough one, but I think LZ was far more accomplished and certainly more varied in their approach. They have some awesome headbanging songs, but they also have some of the most beautiful acoustic tunes in the history of rock. I think it's that excellent juxtaposition of acoustic and electric that sets Zeppelin apart from the majority of rock bands.
That being said, I think Geezer Butler is a better bass player than John Paul Jones, and I like Bill Ward's drumming almost as much as John Bonham's (although the bone crunching play of Bonham is extraordinary).

I play lots of BS and Led Zep on guitar & bass, and Led Zep shows more instrumental brilliance. However, I don't know what they put into Iommi's tea during the "Heaven & Hell" sessions, but that is some brilliant guitar work!! Coupled with RJD vocals, you have magic.

Black Sabbath got more interesting as they went along, pretty much everything is classic but from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath they were much interesting. Led Zep by a country mile. I like that Sabbath established a new genre which appeals to me quite a lot, (doom metal) but for the most part their songs are boring and overly pentatonic based, there is just something lacking in the music. Led Zeppelin just wrote better songs ultimately, I'm sure Sabbath were just as experimental in their own way but Led Zeppelin really mixed a lot of different styles and came out with some amazing songs as a result.

^ And does any of it have organ or piano or complex and melodic riffs executed on a guitar with a rich tone?

Come on, Sabracadabra doesn't have piano? I am guessing you still haven't properly heard Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Sabotage albums.
As for riffs, LZ's riffs may be complex but they are not very crushing, to my ears anyway. I like riffs that are really crushing, infectious and immediately arouse the ace air-guitarist in me into action. If I want complex chords, I will listen to good keyboard music or stuff where they use guitar as an ensemble instrument, e.g. KC, Genesis.

It was a rhetorical question, as if to highlight what Sabbath doesn't have that LZ has in plenty "Do any of those songs have organ or piano or...."?

I've never liked first two LZ albums (exept for the few songs like 'Good Times, Bad Times', etc), and Sabbath's first two albums are masterpieces.
On the other hand, LZ IV and Houses of the Holy are blowing away Vol. 4 and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (and everything else Sabbath ever did). LZ III and Master of Reality are equally good for me.
Sabotage vs Physical Graffiti? Sabotage for me.
On the other hand, Technical Ecstasy and Never Say Die are nothing comparing with Presence and In Through the Outdoor.
And after 70's Black Sabbath did at least one more masterpiece, Heaven and Hell, and Dio is a hell of a singer, especially in comparison with Plant.
In general, LZ are much more professional band, but sometimes the music of BS I can understand better.
Thus, I really can't choose. So I vote for the third variant, I love them equally.
