Subject: Do you own full discography of these 3 bands?
Date Posted: December 03 2010 at 18:45
I saw this on the http://www.progarchives.com/subgenre.asp?style=38 - Prog-Related guide .
Although Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Wishbone Ash may seem like mere
hard rock bands, in their time they stood apart from other hard rockers
with their more serious lyrical content and more developed
compositions. Put simply, in the early 70s every prog-rock record
collector usually had full collections of all three of these artists.
I don't believe it. By that standard, there may have only been 100 prog-rock collectors in the entire world.
Edit: I just realized that these bands only had about 10 albums in the early 70s. So it's much easier for collectors to have every album. My mistake...

I have...one Led Zeppelin album, zero Black Sabbath albums, and one Wishbone Ash album, so the answer for me is...no.

Not much of a Wishbone Ash buff, but it does seem a bit far fetched to describe Sabbath and LZ as mere hard rock. I mean, Kashmir? The Writ? They are much more than just Black Dog or Paranoid.

yup - it's a farfetched idea. I had two zep, two sabb and one ash album in the 70s. I have since increased that to 4 sabb albums, but none of those bands figured much in my musical outlook now or then.

Well I do have everything from Zep and from Black Sabbath, nothing from Wishbone Ash. On vinyl, I got these from my father

If I recollect correctly I had by say 1975/6
Led Zeppelin:
Volume 2
Physical Graffiti
The Song Remains The Same
Wishbone Ash:
Argus
Black Sabbath:
Master Of Reality
That's about it I think. And the Sabbath one I bought cheap.

Re-read it: it's written "in the early 70's". So, I guess it makes the years 1970 to 1972 (maybe 1973?) LZ released 4 or 5 LPs; same account for Black Sabbath and Wishbone Ash; 8 or 9 for Deep Purple, if we keep taking about 70's hard-rock bands.
If we even take more radical measures and say the early 70's are 70-71, we have 4 albums for LZ, 3 for BS, 2 for Wishbone Ash (but 6 for Deep Purple!). It's not gigantic.

^ Purple faired better in my collection in the early 70s as I bought everything upto and including Come Taste The Band, but for me they were more "progressive" and fitted better with the kind of music I liked at the time, especially on their first three Rod Evans albums.

I've always had the Led Zep albums but I never had any Sabbath albums until a few years ago (frankly, they were always derided in the "serious" music press, along with Uriah Heep) and I only had the first Wishbone Ash album and Argus (now that is an essential album for a prog collector).

I've got every Led Zeppelin album.
One Black Sabbath album (as I just discovered, don't know if I have more) and it's We sold our souls for Rock and Roll.
I don't know if I have a Wishbone Ash album but maybe, never know.

I have all of Led Zeppelin, and most of Black Sabbath. I am missing 3 or 4 Black Sabbath albums. I only have a greatest hits album from Wishbone Ash however.

I own all of Zeppelin. I would rather shoot myself than listen to quite a few albums in the Sabbath/Ash discography, let alone pay money for them.

I listen rather often to 1971, 1973 and 1975 Sabbaths albums and very rarely to LZ.

All 1970's Sabbath and Zeppelin, no Wishbone. Come to think of it, I don't know that I've ever heard them - I've certainly heard of them, but no songs come to mind.

I did have all the Led Zep albums apart from Coda, which was more of a left-overs thing anyway, 2 by Wishbone Ash, and 2 by Black Sabbath, got these all in the eighties, I was only a wee pup in the 70's you know!

Black Sabbath: I had (and have) Black Sabbath, Paranoid, Master of Reality, Vol IV, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, and Sabotage, so first half of the 70s. Got tired of them after that, but still enjoy listening to the first 5 of these.
Led Zeppelin: I had (and have) I, II, III, IV, Houses of the Holy, Physical Graffiti, so again, first half of the 70s. Heard Presence, but didn't like it so much, so never bought it. Still love hearing these first 6 albums.
Wishbone Ash: I had Argus and There's the Rub. Liked but never loved. Still enjoy listening to Argus from time to time. Warrior is catchy.

As of, say 1975:
Black Sabbath: I had the first four.
Led Zep: Had 'em all.
Wishbone Ash: Had the first four.
Sabbath and Wishbone Ash I lost interest in but never Zep.

I would never have regarded either of those bands as prog rock in the 70s, and still don't.
By the end of the 70s, I would have owned: all Zeppelin, eight Wishbone Ash, and zero Sabbath.
These days, on CD, I have: all Zeppelin's studio albums, four Wishbone, zero Sabbath.

Wow, kind of narrows the number of prog-rock collectors. I think there are fans out there who own the discographies of all three but absolutely HATE progressive rock.
I own all the Zep albums, then again every teenager owned them all when I was a kid. I dig the first three Sab albums but can't say I really like anything after. And Wishbone Ash? Yawn.....the Argus album is really all I need but I can't say I even own a copy anymore.

I had all the Zep and Sabbath albums they released in the 70s, but only one Wishbone Ash album. However the statement in the OP does reflect my collecting habits and those of my friends.

Sabbath I have the first 2. I had the first 4 but time has eroded where the 3rd and 4th went.
LZ I have all but Coda and i have no interest in buying it.
Ash I had the first three then the Live album. Have another 2 from the recent tours. Argus i have the US vinyl version which is mixed differently than the UK version , the Uk vinyl, the cd and the enhanced cd with live tracks on it. The first album remains one of my favourite albums of all time.

I got
Led Zeppelin - Everything, and a lot of related (solo works - The Firm, ect.)
Black Sabbath, 4-5 Early Albums (and Born Again - more Ian Gillan than Black S)
Wishbone Who ?
If someone said, everyone with a good collection of 70's Rock (not particulary Prog)
I would go with :
Zepplin (everything)
Deep Purple (from 1970-1975)
Uriah Heep (most albums from 70's)
Black Sabbath (5 first)
Where i come from, most have (had) between 0-2 Wishbone, very few have (had) a collection.

Any real rock lover (real rock, sixty/seventy style) must have the first six LZ albums, same with BS and the first couple of Dio's and WA's Argus. I've come to this train lately but since my early adulthood have all LZ albums (official minus collections), all BS with Ozzy and Dio (minus collections and the H&H studio album), Argus & Pilgrimage by WA. Think the latter band was good but when the guitar partnership broke up they were never the same again.
Can't understand all despise on BS and Ozzy. Maybe a prog purist thing.
