Just quickly scrolling through the thread:

What Are You Listening To? Febus Mark VI

and I'm continually left asking: what is role/purpose of this thread? At one level it iprovides a shopping list of disconnected album titles, often with no more a repro of the front cover artwork and the contributor's name. Rarely do you see any attempt to justify, say through a review (okay if you are really bothered you go to the artist/album section - but who does?). Are you trying to flag up a great album or good new album or what? Why are you playing this album and why do you want to tell the PA community that you listening to it right at that moment? Are you trying to reflect your tastes to the PA community by the means of regular entries - although  you risk being accused of having no taste by some....? Now let's be honest, with a free few seconds and if I can overcome the inertia, I've contributed - but without any subsequent acknowledgment (no 'hey great taste' to 'it sucks') I'm left thinking: this is seeds split on barren ground? Do anybody really care I've been listening to School of Language's album recently???

From the number of pages etc. such a thread is popular  but I can't work out why, unless it part of the Nerdiness of prog fans. Or killing time. Or an equivalent to train number spotting? Or..................(please fill in that gap in reply). And I guess  there are numerous other threads that seem to go nowhere but are still read.

I think it's all three of the reasons you stated.

Hey, it's about posting album cover art and making quick comments about what you are listening to.  Actually one of my favorite threads.  It's also fun if you coincidentally are listening to something someone else is or going "hey, I haven't listened to that one in a while, gonna whip it out".

Now I won't say anything in defense of the other threads out there, but if you don't like the listening threads perhaps you will find this one a bit more interesting:

Here, I don't know the members' taste so much (getting there), but on another forum, I know a couple of members whose tastes are quite aligned with mine. Whenever they post an album I've never heard of, I look it up because it's highly likely I will enjoy it.

For me, that particular thread helps me discover new music.

Best not to analyse it. If it's being read and contributed to, and not upsetting anyone then who cares what it's setting out to do..if anything.

Mostly what I use it for, I love that thread.
I've also used it to grab album recommendations a few times.

It gets my interest going when I see a nice album cover so I will ask about it. Also nice when someone comments on what you are listening too. Sometimes it is showing off I suspect though.

Actually, I do!  Is that School of Language as in the Field Music offshoot?  "Sea From Shore" is the album if I recall.

I really like Field Music and the other offshoot, The Week That Was, but I have not had the School of Language album long and am not so familiar with it.

It is an open invitation to start a discussion regarding music that you are currently listening to or just the album covers in general or whatever.  What is the point of the internet?  What is the point of this website?  What is the point of any forum?  What is the point of any thread in a forum?  There is information to be had or shared if wanted.  It is an act of socialization (or prog nerdiness if you prefer).

I rarely see discusions in mentioned thread. I don't think replies like "Cool!" or "Great album" are discussions.

There are many "What do you think of that album?" responses in that thread, and that is what creates the discussion.

Probably one of the things I really enjoy about it is when you get oddly coincidental cover art between two posts.

Of course the initial post question does make the mistake of assuming that threads have any purpose in the first place.

I always start threads for the sole purpose of annoying people. Evil Smile

v v v I think we've pretty much reached a consensus amongst those of us who have commented on that thread in this one. LOL

Yes and you even inspired me to dig it out ... almost ... except that I went and had a look at the Febus thread first (it's not normally one I look at) and came across an album by Upsilon Acrux.  I was sufficiently intrigued both by the cover and the name of the band to explore further.  I found an album called Galapagos Momentum on Spotify which I rather enjoyed and is now on my wishlist!

OK - now I'll play School of Language!

^ That's it - that's why the thread is popular and some say, even useful.

It's like a silent radio station where you don;t have to listen to every track they play, but if you see one that interests you or you haven't played for a while then you go and play it or spotify it.

Sorry, but I just have to say this:

If you attack those threads whose length shows their appeal to many, many PA users, don't you think the problem lies with you instead of with those others?

He misunderstood the nature of the thread, now he understands and appreciates. He asked a question, he got an answer. Move along, nothing to see here...

Firstly, I didn't see any thread as of his I understand as stating what you say.
Secondly, if that's so then close the friggin' thread. What is this, a trap?

Why close the thread?  The initial question was seriously answered, we've had a little fun, and now we have a great spot to question various threads.

Thank you for enlighten me! Now I understand the purpose of the thread! Embarrassed Only one thing still puzzles me: I do not know what "Febus Mark VI" means. Can someone help?

Febus was a much loved PA member who passed away recently, and I believe they leave that there as a tribute to his favorite thread.
