Notice: There are included The Golden Era members only. I don´t believe, with deep reverence of them, that anybody will vote for Kenney Jones or Doug Sandom.
Keith Moon was simply Mr. Drummer and Grand Old Man concededly.
And what about another members of one of most influential rock bands of 60´s and 70´s years of 20th century? I can´t try to guess who´s the most favourite of them.
Pete Townshend, incredible guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, composer, "Brain of the Band", creator of "Windmill style" of guitar playng?
Roger Daltrey, frontman, excellent lead vocalist, composer, another madman on stage?
John Entwistle, one and only quiet point on the stage, one of the best bass guitarist of the world, genuine creator of Rock bass sound and the Great Guru of his instrument?

Pete's the main man in every way, but Keith was literally my idol for the majority of my life. Still is, in a way.

This is definitely one of those bands where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. While I can't imagine anyone not recognizing Townsend as one of the 20th century's great songwriters or of Keith Moon as one of the greatest drummers, I have to say that the Quiet one, the Ox, the late great John Entwistle is was my favourite.

Loved them all, and I'm surprised poor old Roger only has two votes![Cry Cry](smileys/smiley19.gif)
This is one of those bands where the sum was greater than the individual parts. Townsend wrote virtually all of the material, but, as he admits himself, could never have translated much of it without Daltrey's vocals. And as for that rhythm section - the best.
For those reasons, I can't really vote.

Started out on Drums many years ago. In a way, Keith taught me how to play.
Gotta be Moonie!

When I was in my early teens, Roger was THE man....then I picked up his Ride a Rock Horse LP - when he started writing with Leo Sayer it really stripped away that razor tough street punk attitude. I never heard the Who the same way again. Roger just became an overblown mouth piece for Pete's writing. I much prefer the Pete sung demos of all the 70s classics that Roger ran roughshod over. No subtlety whatsoever....and Pete's songs, though often loud and bombastic, really are subtle pieces.
To me, Pete really is THE man, not just in the Who but in any rock band. The guy really wrote rock anthems....things that stick with you your entire life.
------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

Pete Townsend but special mention must go to to Keith Moon. What happened to Rock and Roll stars destroying hotel rooms and of course drum kits? ( guitars too) Its not the same anymore ![Smile Smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif)

He "copied" it from Keith Richards, though Keith didn't even realise he was doing it, so yeah, Pete was the first to use it.

I think they both copied it from Elvis.....

Man I love The Who.......I would give anything to see them live......with Keith Moon on the drum kit. That sloppy playing style was simply awesome......
Keith is my favorite for sure.

As far as picking a favorite member of the Who, my longtime favorite rock band, goes, well ... the effort has propelled me into a series of unpleasant FACE DANCES. I mean, really... WHO ARE YOU to ask me to rate the members of the WHO BY NUMBERS as if such a difficult question as if it were merely A QUICK ONE? The tension is enough to propel me into a state of QUODROPHENIA--me and many other members of MY GENERATION, I'm sure. No sooner do I pick one name, than the obvious question arises: WHO'S NEXT? Don't get me wrong. It's not as though I want to whip out a TOMMY gun and start firing into crowds, or even string myself up on an ENDLESS WIRE. All I'm really saying is, IT'S HARD.
But in the end--and I hope this doesn't sound like a SELL OUT--I've gotta say John.

That shouldn't stop you. He is one of the defining voices of rock music, and one of the best live performers I have ever seen.

Has to be pete townshend, an amazing songwriter.

I'll go with The Ox - probably the most accomplished musician of the four (brass as well as bass, and a versatile multi instrumentalist on his solo albums) and an underrated songwriter.

The only reason I listen to them is Keith Moon. Baba O'Riley is pretty much as good as it can ever get drumming wise.

I can't even vote I'm so conflicted. John and Keith was as good a rhythm section as there was, ever. But Pete wrote the really good songs. And Roger sang them okay. Not voting, though i'd lean towards Pete who other than that guitar player in my band taught me everything I know about guitar.
------------- Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

Although I agreed that classic The Who wasn't possible without anyone of four, my fav member is John Entwistle.
