Topic: Women Comedians . . . What Am I Missing?Posted By: JLocke
Subject: Women Comedians . . . What Am I Missing?
Date Posted: August 11 2010 at 15:08
I am not sexist. I think many men are idiotic in their 'humor', and on average, I think women are usually more intelligent than men. So why is it than in the Stand-Up comedy world, these roles seem to be reversed?
Yes, plenty of guys who take the mic are just as crass and stupid as any drunk frat boy, but the handful of men who are funny are usually not only funny, but brilliant. Even when they use colourful language and sexual humor, the best of them alway manage to put a new spin on it that makes me laugh from deep within my gut, and of course the messages they give are oftentimes things that really make me sit and think.
On the other hand, it's very rare I find women comedians all that funny, much less making any deeper political or philosophical points underneath the jokes. I'm not saying every woman I've seen on stage wasn't funny, but I am saying that for the most part, the amount of men who make me laugh far outweigh the women.
So, what's going on here? Am I just looking in the wrong places? Am I crazy? Feel free to recommend me some of your favorite female comedians for me to give a chance or two. (If it's sex jokes, or jokes making fun of men, don't bother. I've heard nothing BUT that type of stuff from women behind the mic for as long as I can remember. Send me someone more original)
Thanks.

becouse men got b***ls , or lets the testosterone speak for them, their brains get unroused with the mixture of testosterone, andrenaline and with the smell of estrogene makes the men's brain capasaty numb and the vocal chords touches the subconscious were the underlying, satirical, punchy referances are hidden

I would recommend Maria Bamford, but you didn't like her in that other thread.

I like her a lot. She's good. But I also like Wanda Sykes (though I see why Rob and others may dislike her...)

Quite right- Wanda Sykes is a loudmouth and as informed as she is humorous. I don't mind liberal comics getting political at all, but if you're going to insult me, you'd better be funny.
Ellen- though I of course would disagree with her politics- is the funniest woman on television in my opinion. She doesn't really get political (or sexual) though, even in a lot of her stand-up. One of her HBO specials we caught was decidedly PG. Keeping things clean and hilarious shows real talent.

Well, okay. You got me, there. But I guess since I've seen her in so many movies, sitcoms, commercials and her own talk show, it's hard for me to think of her as a 'Stand-Up' comedian before any of those other things.
But yes, I find her very funny.

Meh, never really found her very funny. Then again there's not too many comedians I like.
Alot of the male ones are terrible. *obligatory Dane Cook is the worst thing to get on a stage comment*

I'm going to say this once. Or as many times as I feel like saying it:
Dane Cook had me on the floor every time I've seen or heard his stand up. So there.

Please tell me you're joking. You're the last person on here I would expect to be judgmental.
I'm fairly certain you misunderstood what Slart was saying (which he didn't word well).
I think he meant he was a fan of hers even before she came out on TV and soon became much more famous.
Ah. Well, that was in the back of my mind, but I figured he would have simply worded it as you did if that was what he meant.

The English language is an often ambiguous one.
Women tend to be more advanced linguistically earlier on than men, so they don't find as many things funny as men do. Hell, I laughed a good 5 minutes at the word "poot" today. No context. Just a funny word.

Indeed. I first saw her stand up on Comedy Central many years ago. I was trying to make a joke there, too. I had the hots for her back then and still do. I really like her sense of humor.

I do miss her. I have so many memories of watching her with my Mom on Maude, All in family, and Golden Girls. She gaves us so many laughs with that straight-faced, sarcastic, dead-pan wrath of whoever she was nailing.

What I've found is that women comedians tend to do comedy about being women, about their periods, pregnancy, the things they talk about with other women, etc. As a man, I find it hard to relate to these jokes. The most successful female comedians pick topics that everyone can relate to.
My favorite is Paula Poundstone.

oh sh** well okydokey then
inspired you as in "this was bad, wonder if some chicks are funny"
or as in "this was funny, wonder if there are other funny women"
just out of curiosity
The former, unfortunately.
But hey, just my opinion. I might even come 'round to 'getting' her brand of humor at some point. I never rule anything out.
potato potato..... just realized how that phraze does not translate well into type
i dunno I like comedians that dont go for the usual high energy "how are you doing tonight!" "any _____s out there!" "how many of you like _____?!" type of thing

My double-act partner is female, and we've had some very detailed discussions about the lack of decent female comedians in the UK. The main problem seems to be that a lot of female comedians are overly concerned with being female - most of their materials seems to hang on the fact that they are women. Now, the material we write together is utterly gender-neutral. Our comedy is generally surreal, metatextual and often quite profane - we'd sooner quit than write a sketch in which we explored the supposed differing attitudes of men and women.

It's the same problem any minority comedian has. People expect black people to make jokes about being black and gay people to make jokes about being gay. Which is thrilling when it first enters the cultural milieu and is outrageous and naughty but soon becomes tiresome when that's all you get. As with music, the best comedians do not give a sh*t about audience expectations, though they may find it hard to survive commercially. I used to do comedy myself and I know some failed comedians who are pretty much inarguably better than some guys who've made it big. Thing is the guys who made it big dumbed down or pandered to crowds. I also personally knew a guy who is one of the biggest comedians in New Zealand now and I'll tell you, the reason he's big isn't because he's funny but because he's a merciless opportunist.
