This thread's purpose is simple. To discuss Czech bands Eastern European bands (Czech Republic, Slovakia and I believe that Romania, Croatia, former Yugoslavia, Estonia, Lithuania, Ukraine and few others) that can be added here. Possible additions. I have most of Czech Prog/Art Rock material, but I don't heard all of them and some of them avoided my attention.

May I propose my humble (well, bold actually) idea ? The purpose of this thread is to find someone, who will be able to consult with me adding many bands, will be able to listen samples and will have time to do this. Because with "exotic" or "small" (my country's case) countries like Czech Republic, there is big problem of adding anything, because there are no samples, or not in English internet. In Czech, they sometimes are about Czech, but not in all cases.
I also wish to see some suggestions of Czech bands. If you know them, go post it here please. Anything sounding Prog will do. Even slight glimpses of Prog, but don't suggest typical Rock, Metal bands, because I personally know hundreds of them, so I'm not interested in common bands, but rather in Czech Prog. Even being from Czech Republic, I don't know everything.
The bigger the country is, the easier it is to add something + More artistic freedom (they're not banned, prosecuted, interrogated and suppressed by government) means more diverse bands which in turn equals to more Prog bands. + It has something to do with culture of certain country, but I'm sure that Czech culture is interesting with wide varieties to find a lot of Prog bands.
REWARDS for those willing to help me:
1)You will experience I dare to say unknown music from "not one of the major Prog countries". We're just 10.000.000 people, but we have enough interesting music to satisfy your needs. So that's it, new experiences. 2)Good feeling from helping good case. It will be hard, for all of us who will participate, but the results will be there and I think it's quite challenging to explore whole new country of Prog music, isn't it ?
I may post in this thread, because these bands have one thing in common. Nobody knows them here and they are all Czech. Or make separate threads, but I would prefer first choice.
So what do you think about this idea ? I've tried to do this about half a year ago, but I abandoned it after not making it possible to work out something. The important thing is being interested in this and having time. But I suppose that after all, we all are doing this "PA thing" for free.

All the time. Slovenia sounds like Slovakia (and in Czech it is SLOVENSKO & SLOVINSKO, so just one letter different) and Slovakia was part of Czecho. Well, I'll suggest Jablkoň this evening (now 11:39 AM).
Hell, I've suggested two bands right now and I plan to suggest others too. Let's watch Heavy Prog thread in Collab zone Moris :-)

Lubos Andrst ? Have to check him more thoroughly. Bara Basikova? I was thinking about her too, she is basically singer of Stromboli that is already here, Michal Pavlíček helped her a lot. Domaci Capela ? Never heard about, will check. Dunaj? already here. MCH Band? Will check in next days Olympic? I'm not so optimistic about this one, they're too Pop/Rock, but we can give them try here.
Michal Pavlicek ? He's probably the biggest mastermind ever coming from Czech Republic. No-brainer by my opinion. Richter Band ? Never heard, will check, I'm curious. Ser Un Pejalero? Uh ? Marián Varga? already here

It should be suggested to another team.

You know, it has growls, it's Death Metal for me. But let the team decide, I'm still trying to learn to improve my judgment.

Maybe I gave you bad album, but maybe they would be more suitable to Eclectic. Thanks for update, I overlook it .
Psí vojáci, another difficult nut to crack. Their discography is about 20 studio albums (& related projects) long and so it's hard to decide. I have to say that I listened 2 albums. Yeah, just two, so I suggested Baroque.

And having been an "eclectic" guy. I'd be willing to listen to various ones you think may be right for either Eclectic, RIO/Avant, Jazz-Rock Fusion. Canterbury Scene, Prog Folk (especially acid folk),. Krautrock-sounding stuff (Czechrock), Electronic, Psyche, or Raga Rock (or crosses symph, though there are many bands I love in symph, but I fear having to listen to something like Spock's Beard).
Pigeonholing artists is often difficult, and commonly I like the more "out of the typical prog box" especially if it incorporates academic or "ethnic" music, jazz, and psyche/ cosmic elements (choral work is a plus) and if experimental it's a plus. What I don't like is AOR/ melodic rock and arena rock type music (or most alt. rock and metal and NeoProg), so steer those ones clear of me.
Greg, you will make fine guy to work with, because of this eclecticity.
By the way, we recently added Ota Petřina to Symphonic. Maybe you will be interested.

It is always a good plan to try to get a wider picture of the prog scene in the world, and I'm sure you'll get cooperation from most (if not all) of the collaborators.
And so we have few bands for ZART too, even some of them will probably be Eclectic and some Crossover.

Hey,Marty,
It's nice to see you opened the place where all info and suggestions on Estern European progressive music could be discussed!
Briefly, I can remember Jazz Celula, Czech band from early 70-s, which in some periods played jazz fusion. Later the founder immigrated to States and founded US-version of this band, but more jazz, not jazz fusion one, which is active till now. The big problem is the public samples of early (Czech) Jazz Celula, may be you can find them. I am not sure, from what I heard they are somewhere between jazz and early jazz fusion in some compositions.
Their new (US band) works are pure jazz though.

I would also like to show my planned strategy. As Alex harmonium.ro told me, there were similar attempts. So what we need is common goal and good planning, good strategy how to achieve it. Therefore I propose you this.
It's not final, it's not decisive and all people on this list haven't agreed yet. It's subject to changes. But for now:
People assigned to each country/countries as mentors, as keepers, guardians, whatever you call it.
People who will care and have bigger or lesser knowledge in country's scene.

Speaking about Eastern European bands, I believe some of them are well-known now (as SBB, Blue Effect,Collegium Musicum or Riverside) and many are included on PA. But at the same time, there are many of old and new onces, still a best kept secret.
We have there some artists from Baltics on PA, but you always can find something interesting besides of them.
For example, there are young generation psychedelic fusion underground band from Lithuania - "Magic Mushrooms". Aren't they interesting? :

Milan, you're right in your own manner,but... ProgArchives are "progressive rock" site, not JAZZ, and according to strict PA rules only most progressive jazz-rock/fusion artists could be presented on site. It's understandable - PA is ROCK site, and without serious filter it could become full of jazz artists (or house/trance artists instead of progressive electronic, for example). What doesn't mean rejected candidates are bad JAZZ artists. Possibly one day they all find their place on JAZZ site, what is their real home. Just my opinion ...

Nevermind. I´ll wait to another reviewers´opinion. Maybe somebody judges us. Maybe Oswald Schneider belongs better to Crossover Prog...
What´s true, this band plays more than 20 years strictly non-commercial music using fusion between Rock and Jazz with a little odour of Electronica. "Electro-Pop" isn´t it in any case, I promise!
As regards Red Baron Band, I suggest them because there is similar Czech band (from the same city, Prague), named Votchi. With a difference that RBB begins to play earlier, therefore they are old warhorses.

I would like to show you one of old Czech/Slovak suggestions by Magor (who suggested most of Czech/Slovak bands before):
Not everything has to appeal to Jazz Prog genre, some of them may be Eclectic, or Crossover. It happens all the time. Sadly, requirements for Jazz Rock / Fusion genre are, as you said Slava, strict.
I had few days off (in offline world, you know, Land Without Computer), so let me just give time and I will listen it through.

Slava's country certainly has a lot to offer. Estonia is the smallest from Baltic states and it has much more bands. Not sure why, Slava probably knows why.
Anyway Keishiro, what about to use similar map for Asian countries ? You can ask for help of people, who knows more about certain countries and would be willing to talk/suggest bands.

Hi, Marty (and all Eastern Prog fans),
Every albums of Prúdy are included in Collegium Musicum section. I think it´s not alright and this chapter should be divided because there are two another bands.
Jazz Celula - I absolutely don´t know why this band isn´t here yet. This is without doubt masterpiece of JR/F!
Vltava - entirely unclassifiable band in this "strict JR/F criteria". Rock music with a touch of vaudeville, jazz, swing, some modern elements, maybe pop, using dada or surrealistic lyrics, sung in Czech with funny falsetto... I´m curious what would unknowing reviewers say to their music.

Good idea. Put it in line.
And as to Klar, atypical for West but a good psych-flavoured outfit. Thumbs up from me.

1)From what I saw, only first album ( http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2014#discography - COLLEGIUM MUSICUM discography ) is here. I suppose that Prudy can make a case here and succeed. Give it a time please.
2)Jazz Celula - I was listening their album Oheň až požár and what can I say - pure JR/F.
3)Vltava - I know them very well. I think that JR/F isn't good choice for them, they're not hardcore Jazz like Jazz Celula. Their place would be maybe in Eclectic, or Crossover.
Keishiro, that's fine. Most of my suggestions will be atypical from now on. Aren't all big names here already ? Then it's time to look for these obscure (unknown) or obscure atypical bands like the ones from Czech Republic.
Happy hunting :-)

Hi all,
I´m not quite streetwise in Heavy Metal, but I want to suggest an interesting band from Moravia, land of Czech Republic, named Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy. This is very unique mix of Metal, Folk and (sometimes) Classical music, sung in English or Czech.

Prog Metal will-suggest
Silent Stream of Godless Elegy Symphonity Stíny plamenů (from Pilsen)
with Master's Hammer & Oblomov being evaluated (and it seems like success)
of course + Asmodeus & Atari Terror.

Thinking of Czech Prog Rock, I have remembered another interesting artists I´ve seen alive, OTK. This obscure band plays about 21 years their hardshell music, somewhere between RIO/Avant and Eclectic Prog.
http://bandzone.cz/otk - http://bandzone.cz/otk
So, and their fellows, more famous and festooned with many musical prizes in Czech Republic, Tata Bojs, are hard to sort here. I mean Crossover Prog. Especially their 6th, conceptual, piece "Nanoalbum" predestinates them to presence on Progarchives.

^ Milan, your suggestions are always a pleasure to read. The ones I sometimes know, but never thought about them in Prog way.
I don't know OTK, but Tata Bojs could work. "Nanoalbum" is really a gem, even it may be tough challenge to get them here.
What Vltava album do you think is the most Prog ? I was thinking about ///Marx Engels Beatles///, or their very first. Eclectic or Crossover. Unfortunately not Jazz.

Marty,
"Marx Engels Beatles" is the most Prog Vltava album, it´s true. It´s their masterpiece, most compact and hardest album ever. On the previous album "Šťastnej jako trám" are included more Swing and Jazz than Rock. And contemporary Vltava (without record, for the present) brings even more Rock music, without saxes for this once.
OTK - surely, Tata Bojs - maybe. I shouldn´t curse a Tata Bojs´ chance for this time. Let the others express their opinion. I´m curious.

Briefly listened to Tata Bojs myspace samples, generally indie-pop, influenced by post new-wave. Don't know from what albums these songs come, but more or less all of them are somewhere on indie-pop territory.
OTK samples sound more as Eclectic for me, didn't hear much of avant, at least on presented samples.

Great band's site and many of samples presented there. Sound nice, mix of symphonic metal and some folk elements, very melodic, with classic influences. Something similar to Nightwish, but with more original Eastern European flavours.

Hi Slava,
if I´d tell the truth, I didn´t believe Tata Bojs to add here. But that´s a pity, their music is certainly interesting, especially their "Nanoalbum". They are, unfortunately, not accepted neither by rockers, nor by pop radios. Their roots are in Punk rock. Nowadays, their style is something like Prog-Indie-Dance (and this isn´t accepted in PA, regrettably).
I recommend you OTK and I hope you´ll like it.

Just keep on mind that when someone suggests something, teams are extremely busy, there are dozens of bands they have to evaluate and dozens more are being suggested every week.
Try to wait few weeks before bumping. Bumping, mentioning them again.
Anyway, I'm quite glad for your propositions. They are giving me hints what is and what is not Prog - from the music I don't know / don't know so well.
If you want, just suggest them to me and wait some time, I will eventually handle them sooner or later.

I am not sure about Czech radio, but for example in Poland there are some small stations, and even few bigger, who translates quite interesting music - from old-time jazz and blues to late 60s-70s progressive rock, jazz-rock, etc. For sure, all big commercial radio stations translate same pop all around the world

Biggest radio station Evropa 2 wrote:

However, there is quiet famous radio station called Radio Beat, where Beat stands for Rock. It's Rock radio, playing Prog music too, but mostly Rock.
There is top 500 song list that was made by votes of listeners:
Just scroll through Czech text till you get to the list.
1 HIGHWAY TO HELL - AC/DC 2 STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN - LED ZEPPELIN 3 SATISFACTION - ROLLING STONES 4 HIGH HOPES - PINK FLOYD 5 WE WILL ROCK YOU - QUEEN 6 RUN TO THE HILLS - IRON MAIDEN 7 NOTHING ELSE MATTERS - METALLICA 8 PARANOID - BLACK SABBATH 9 YESTERDAY - BEATLES 10 SMOKE ON THE WATER - DEEP PURPLE
So at least you can be barely in connection with Prog here. And Rock quite rocks too, it's good substitute for Prog at times.

Istro-Romanians... It depends. When they speak normally, sometimes it doesn't make any sense and sounds more like Portuguese, sometimes I recognize words any even bigger portions of talk, but even then I can't figure out what they're saying overall. But when they're asked to speak clear and count or say the days of the week, it sounds almost like Romanian. Also, interesting to see that they have absolutely no problem to understand the Romanian reporter. Pizda is considered as quite offensive word in Czech too. It refers to pedantic / stupid woman :-?
Terusi has therefore one "EP" with two songs (Slutnja & Mjesto pod sluncem) assuming my informations is correct. Can it be considered as release then ? It sounds good (I consider a lot of things as "good", which means thousands of different adjectives).
I suppose they could make a case here. What do you think ?
Ibn Tup - Based on two songs from Youtube (Deda & Pasidov el kaktus), Arabic Heavy Prog ? Sadly, these songs are not of high quality (not by far), but given conditions back then, I understand.

Amazing Istra was - originaly - Italia, and that great italian spirit is to still live there - although that italian majority in Istra were, sadly enough, send by trucks to Italy in 1945 - or just executed by Slovenians partisans. I love Istra - especialy inside of the peninsula is great. In 70s and early 80s, those "ghost villiges" were filled up by many of hippies from different countries; the artists, musicians, or just freaks - hey, Ask Mr Clarke for more details.

How about Riverside from Poland? Also, SBB from Poland? Both progressive bands..
Janez Boncina is a legendary, crossover prog singer-songwritter from Slovenia who was started his career with that early progrock band Srce (I posted one live track by them). IMHO, Janez deserved to be at PA!
issued 1983
live recorded, i dont know the year.
As I said above, his early band Srce :
1973 live recorded

They both are on PA, and in fact are possibly most popular progressive artists from all Eastern Europe (just from different periods of time).

OK, continuing my post from here:

Here's the reply to my reply:

I know Moris, I've tried to edit the post 5 times to blue Synkopy too, but unfortunately, to no avail.
Now to the rest, my opinion (common knowledge, not deep listening and research):
Bacily (prog-related?) - don't know much. Prog-Related or Proto Prog. But I don't know them at all.
Etc (folk, crossover) - I suppose Crossover, their second album is the best. Then they got ban on making music and next albums are released many years later in 80s. http://progfreak.com/Vladimir-Misik,_dbe,artists,_auto_9072843.xhtml?path=pa/recent - Here are pleasing news from the land of Freaks
I have to note that in Czech R., he is rated as one of the Rock legends, among Radim Hladík (Blue Effect) and Michal Pavlíček (Pražský výběr).
Extempore (RIO/avant) - I was listening them recently. Really great weird stuff
Jazz Cellula (jazz-rock/fusion) - ? Never heard about them.
Prudy (prog related/proto prog) -Collegium Musicum related
Jazz Celula - really great Jazz. Unfortunately, it doesn't have too much of Rock "element", so maybe this will be a problem.
Extempore - sure bet for Avant, I will prepare my suggestion soon.
Prudy - still haven't listened them. However, their first album is listed under Collegium Musicum
Etc (Vladimir Misik & Etc ...) - I hope he will be successful for Crossover. So far so good.
