I've noticed on this site that there seems to be a lot of proggers who only enjoy classic prog, like Yes, Crimson, Floyd, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. Anything with a touch of metal is looked upon with suspicion.

For me, and I'm sure many others, I discovered prog through listening to Dream Theater, Opeth, etc. These modern bands are a great gateway drug into the older stuff.

So, are you into straight up prog; prog/metal crossover, or both?

I enjoy "straight-up prog", prog-folk, etc. Prog metal I enjoy provided it does NOT have death growls. Not fond of the cookie monster. But I like some Opeth, some Dream Theater, After Forever, Lacrimosa, Pain of Salvation -- anything with some feeling and melody, and again, no cookie monsters.

Haven't really gotten into prog metal... or metal at all. I like Tool and Primus, but I usually just can't stand metal. I enjoy pretty much every other genre on this sight except for prog-metal. I'm going to try to get more open to it, but it just hasn't clicked with me so far.

I love classic prog, and I love a lot of straight ahead metal, but prog metal is, to my ears, mostly self indulgent nonsense devoid of originality or strong compositions. Opeth is okay, and I like Mastodon a lot, but bands like Dream Theater and Shadow Gallery do nothing for me.

I'm not real big on prog metal, so I guess you could call me a 'straight up' kinda guy.  I do listen to some of the genre, however, such as Dream Theater and Rush.  Symphonic Prog and Prog-Folk are my mainstays.

I have two prog metal albums by bands that have been active since the 80s (Queensryche and DT), but I just can't stand the cliches and samey sounding modern gloss of this genre. I'll take prog from 70s and the 80s over the claptrap being issues these days. As for metal... its all been done before and since cookie monster vocals seem to be the biggest innovation of the past 20 years I count myself out of this goofy game.

I got into prog via Pink Floyd, but even before that I liked some metal, which has grown on me too. When I found about DT and prog-metal, well it was real cool to have them both mixed... and as a matter of fact, metal seems a rather natural evolution of prog.

I started out listening to prog when I was a little kid because my dad listened to some prog bands like Jethro Tull and Yes, but at the time I didn't know what prog even was I just thought it was good music. I really didn't discover what progressive music was until my guitar teacher made me listen to Dream Theater and from that point on I liked prog rock/metal. Its kinda a curse really.

I must say that prog metal rather doesn't especially affect me. First I love the great 70's oldschool prog era, second - its 80's neo-continuation. I respect 'modern' prog sound too - especially symphonic.

Used to be a big metal fan, not knowing or caring that a lot of what I listened to was labelled prog metal. Not so much these days, when I prefer classic metal and some selected power/speed metal and thrash metal bands for my dose of the harder stuff.

However, good prog-rock is so much more than classic prog and good prog is so much more than prog-ROCK. And good music is so much more than good prog LOL

I may like some progressive or post-metal as long as it is kept clean of death-metal growls. Tech/Extreme Prog Metal is, generally spoken, not my cup of tea.

I was also raised a metalhead, then from that got more and more into progmetal, thinking that was the best thing ever created, then found this site, and discovered all manner of older gems that werent metal in the slightest. So i love both 'classic prog' and prog metal. However I agree that some prog metal is a bit self indulgent for me, like DT

As for 21st Century Schizoid Man, it has NOT the cliches metal has.

And yes, there are lots of great music outside of classic prog.

I enjoy many types of music, but metal just isn't for me. I understand its appeal, though. As I've explained before, back in 1984 (!) when I was in the army (reluctantly, of course), my best mate was into early Metallica, Venom and Loudness. Even then, I could tell the music he played showed similarities to symphonic prog. I found it much easier to get along with him than with guys who were crazy about Wham or Depeche Mode!

I mainly listen to '70 prog but I also have some metal vinyl and some hard rock classics. Modern metal does not interest me that much, I just got a new record from Opeth (Blackwater Park) and I don't think it's that interesting. The sound isn't very open.

I think "progressive" mean "open mind", so I accept any growl, metal, distortion, odd element having sense. I prefer a good cookie monster singing than a banal classical prog chant. I mean, when I hear for the 1.000.000.000th time a "new" (?) band replaying the same old consumpted usual Yes or Genesis scheme I get disturbed as much as when I hear disgusting talentless musicians like Lady Gaga or similar no-artists.

I believe "progressive means also "making steps forward". To me a band that play today what was old already 20 years ago, is not progressive. It's patethic, like a grandfather telling you "things went better in my times". That's absolutely wrong: things are messy and bad in every time. :-D

I would like to hear more bands like Thinking Plague or Zappa (meaning open to any musical solution) and less copycats of Yes, Gentle Giant or Genesis. Gentle Giant are one of my favorite band, but already Yezda Urfa sounded disturbing to me... too copycats. I mean, there was one, and it was enough. Let's go for new artists, not for new copies of old artists.

I am a pretty big metalhead, and I do enjoy my share of prog metal.
However, I moreso prefer most of the artists in the "Experimental/Post Metal" and "Tech/Extreme Prog Metal" category than the traditional progressive metal artists.  I make exceptions for Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Riverside, and some others.
I do like some older prog bands like Yes, Rush, Magma, Steely Dan, and some others, but bands like Genesis and Pink Floyd never really did anything for me Confused

BravoClap!!! And a belated welcome to PA from a fellow Italian, though an expatriate oneSmile...

As to the original question, I listen to just about everything - bot out of sheer curiosity, and because of my reviewing activity. Though I grew up with classic prog (especially of the Italian variety - my first approach to the genre), in the past few years I have got acquainted with a lot of new stuff, and found a lot to enjoy and appreciate - for instance, The Mars Volta have quickly become one of my steady favourites.

On the other hand, I am somewhat more ambivalent towards prog-metal. While in the Eighties I was a big metal fan, and still enjoy a lot of 'classic' heavy metal from that era, I have tried in vain to get into Dream Theater and their ilk. As a whole, 'traditional' prog-metal leaves me cold, and  I especially dislike those 'symphonic' PM bands with operatic female vocals - I'd rather listen to death growlsWink. I am much more interested in the tech-extreme or experimental varieties of prog-metal (I'd take Opeth over DT any day), and especially appreciate instrumental bands that combine metal with jazz and other genres.

Prog and prog metal are very broad within itself. Theres much more out there than just the two, even at times more proggressive than the bands in the 'proggressive' genre.

I like old prog and some metal (on a thrashy side)
Prog metal is not my cup of tea. To be frank, I'm not too keen on modern prog in general.
Of course there are exceptions...and they're growing every day. This site helped me realise there's not only good modern music..but there's also bad music from the 70's, which I idealized in a way.

As for prog-metal, it's unfair to say I dislike it simply because I'm not familiar with it. Most of the stuff I checked leave me cold. Not all though (Pax Cecilia are great).

I do like some modern prog which is often intersecting with prog metal - The Mars Volta, Chrome Hoof, Taal. Hence, I'm sure prog metal is hiding some nice surprises for me in the future. Especially, if on a thrashier side, with not-so-perfect production.

As for the staples of the genre, Dream Theater, I have mixed emotions. Some moments are awful, some are great.

I started out liking trash, punk, hardcore, death, goth and the likes before I ever heard any prog-metal - at least I wasnīt aware of the "proginess" of Death, Napalm Death (who would fit in the archives by the way) and Neurosis. When I finally stumbled over Opeth, I found it really hard to take the mellow vocals with my metal. Incidentally my first ever musical love was Pink Floyd - go figure.
Iīll listen to anything as long as itīs got heart.

I've liked various different metals in the past before I discovered prog, and find that I like some prog metal as well. So far Experimental/Post Metal has been the genre that I've enjoyed the most, with Tech/Extreme being the least. However, the songs that are just heavy chugging guitars + screaming, I dont enjoy so much. I enjoy the more melodic or at least interesting compositions - so, for example, I love Devin Townsends "Soul Driven" while loathing his "Universe in a Ball".

I never used to like any metal related prog at all but fairly recently I have gotten to appreciate Opeth, Porcupine Tree (some it sounds metallic to me at any rate) Diablo Swing Orchestra and Borknagar.

Guess it's a start but yes, the so-called 'growling' can be effective if used sparingly but given so many metal bands now do it, surely it's in danger of already obeying the law that all fads and gimmicks are ultimately subject to i.e.
that of diminishing returns ?

I haven't heard this one, but I have heard Mabool, which impressed me a whole lot. Undoubtedly one of the most original approaches to prog-metal I have ever heard in the past few years - so far removed from the endless stream of DT clones.

I started out as one of the no-metal-persons you described. For a long time I thought I couldn't stand anything metal related.
Then, about a year ago I made a concious effort to get into prog-metal by borrowing some cds and listening to the streams here on PA. I wanted to ease myself in gently and suffered through the whole stream of the "normal" prog-metal subgenre first. I didn't get it at all.
Some weeks later I decided to give it another try and started to listenen to the tech/extrem stream. There I discovered that I really like metal, really like growls and generally even prefer the harder stuff (the weirder the better).
The normal/symph metal still does nothing for me, while I find many bands in the other categories very innovative. I'm glad I finally got over myself and learned to like metal. I would have missed great music otherwise.

There's music and then there are labels ... you choose!

I do enjoy metalish prog such as Neal Morse's Sola Scriptuara and King Crimson's The Power to Believe...
So I am in between + I should give DT another try (any recommendations on where to start will be much appreciated)

I am both. I think that there's a lot of good prog metal band. And there's some prog band that have included in their soud some metal influence (Pendragon, Sylvan, Magenta). It's like metal is the new modern sound of prog or neo prog. I also like classic prog band that have no links to metal, like Yes, Flower Kings etc. So, i must say that prog metal is surley part of my prog experience.

Quote ... So I am in between + I should give DT another try (any recommendations on where to start will be much appreciated)  ...

I don't dislike DT ... and while it may not be everyone's preference ... most "prog" folks can't stand classical music next to their favorites like Genesis and ELP (hehehe ... had to say it!) ... and in the end ... I really think that the live album with the orchestra is magnificent ... if that soloist on guitar was Yo Ma, or a solo artist in great standing, everyone would think it was fabulous, and what a marvelous and expressive player that guitarist was ... but no ... we call it "metal" ... and the appreciation of someone's depth and determination in their musical talent is ... wasted.

DT is not about "metal" ... any more than they are "prog" ... but these might be the best generic words to describe them ... the music is amazingly well written, designed and defined ... and it really doesn't matter if it sounds like Orff, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven or Mozart ... but somehow in this board and a lot of "prog" places, they all want just Beethoven and Mozart ... ears having a hard time accepting/appreciating something totally different ...

Think of a moment in a movie ... that is almost exactly like the description of DT ... and it is the moment in the movie "Amadeus" when Mozart plays to the king ... and no one has a reaction to the music ... which is so different that anything else ... and the word is ... "too many notes ... yes, that's it ... too many notes" ...

Did anyone listen to the music? ... the answer would be almost ... NO ... they turned it off because it was "metal"   ... not because it was "music" ...

I love most metal, so definitely prog metal. I have to recognize the original progressive rock's importance. However, there are metal bands doing things in the past 15-20 years that are doing more innovative things to introduce new ideas to music, and not simply just harsh vocals. Shame on you all who think that's the only stuff metal contributes!

I'm not really into prog metal, but I do enjoy prog that delves into the heavier side of music.  Dial it back six years or so and I wouldn't be accepting of metal being part of the prog universe at all.  I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything though, nor do I have a problem with the idea of some metal as prog.  As I have said before, I'm more of a big tenter than a narrow caster.

I am a metalhead but I like prog metal only selectively.  PoS, Psychotic Waltz, early DT and ACT (who are actually called eclectic prog here anyway).  I don't have a problem with any kind of metal vocals or the heaviness, obviously, but I get less riffs to bite into in prog metal and less melody than well, just prog, too so it's not often very appealing for me.

I 'm a fan of classic prog. I like Dream Theater but that's it. I downloaded an album by Symphony X recently and I like it mainly because of the symphonic parts, the heavier parts are a bit too extreme for my taste. I liked some Opeth too but the growling ruins the whole thing.

I largely agree with this point-of-view.  I tend to find Prog metal very cliched - to the extent that I think putting the word prog with metal creates an oxymoron.  When music is this formulaic how can it be prog?

I'm lucky to be able to enjoy almost all of prog's subgeners. Besides, I started to get into music through classic rock, some of which is now considered proto-prog. Then it was on to heavy and prog rock. I've always enjoyed musical prowess so its no wonder that  I really enjoy prog metal, although that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy symphonic or most of all the classic prog bands. In fact, bands like Dream Theater combine many elements of the classic prog bands along with heavier stuff. The thing is that I have many friends that like prog but that don't even have the interest of exploring some of its offsprings! Sorry for them for its their loss! Maybe they associate prog metal with a younger generation...LOL

Why are classic prog and prog metal presented as the only two options?

Anyway, I'm not a huge fan of prog metal. To be honest I haven't really been exposed to too much. I've got a few Dream Theater albums, who I don't really like all that much anymore, really the only thing I'll listen to is the Mind Beside Itself suite off Awake. The rest got boring fast. I enjoy Opeth, though.

I guess I do have a problem with heavy music, in a way. I don't really mind heaviness itself, that doesn't bother me, but to me it's more the way that all the "chug-chugging" leaves the music sounding harmonically empty to my ears. When the backing for a section is just a guitarist crunching out fifths, there's only so much you can do. And sure they switch it up a bit with changing time signatures and virtuoistic drumming but it still ends up sounding a bit boring to me. Sometimes, Opeth especially, will chug chug in a way that brings out all sorts of weird notes, which I enjoy, but for the most part it's just fifths, fifths and more fifths.

Definitely I love good progmetal. Last cds buyed online were Redemptionī s last work (my great hopeless) and a box with of an excellent spanish team called AVALANCH. The whole discography only 25 dollars...

In my humble opinion, I think nobody who loves prog can deny the doors or heir feelings to another prg scene.

Cheers.

I find that very often prog-metal follows a few certain formulas. Normal Prog doesn't  follow formulas.
I have yet to hear some prog-metal with a section where they play very quiet (and maybe add a little jazz? please!) like for example King Crimson's "21'th century schizoid man". Also the recording of much modern music is to perfect/sharp. To much metal in modern music (not all are bad, some are exeIent Clap). love tons of 80's Trash metal, NWOBHM and Tech/Extreme Metal.  Jazz, Metal, Classical, Rock, and electronica (you can mix all of these genres exept Rock and Metal, right?). I also find most drumming in Prog-metal to be kinda boring, same sound when each drumstick hit the skin. Love all subgenres of prog, Prog-metal being the one i like/listen to the least.

Prog has always had a very close relationship with metal. From the beginning. King Crimson was some of the heaviest stuff around at the time. Songs like Starless and Larks Tongues In Aspic part One have some very heavy parts. Black Sabbath, although more known for being a metal pioneer, rather than prog, always put proggy parts on their albums. Check out some of the stuff on the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album.

Both have technicality and virtuosity as a priority. I'd say metal and prog have more in common than metal and punk do.

And this 'all music after the 80s sucks' routine is so ignorant and closed minded. I thought we were supposed to be prog fans, and thus more open minded about music. I've noticed a lot of this attitude on this board.

Apart from Pink Floyd, I don't really listen to much in the way of classic prog anymore really.
I like metal in general and don't really care if it's prog or not, so I'll happily listen to Megadeth, Nevermore and Katatonia alongside Between the Buried and Me, Opeth and Gojira.
I do like a wider variety of prog though, from the post hardcore-prog stylings of Fall of Troy and The Mars Volta, through to jazz fusion like Ohm and Planet X and a whole bunch of other stuff

I like and perform classic prog. Prog metal, or some other heavier sub-genre, is the music of another generation . I am glad that it exists, that another generation of musicians and listeners keep progressive rock moving forward, but I am part of that original movement. I am not sure the audience for prog metal would believe me, or take me seriously if I was doing stuff made by and for 20-somethings. I am 54.

I am not a Dream Theater fan, but I'd like to point out that their keyboardist, Jordan Rudess, is also 54, and the other members are all in their forties. And prog-metal here has a lot of fans who are much older than 20. As I said in another thread, let's avoid age-related stereotypes whenever possible.

Why avoid people's age, that is, their cultural context, as a valid factor in their preferences and inclinations. Without that, a 54 yr old player in a new-style band loses its significance, rather than gaining some sort of objective stance.

If age is relevant then of course take into consideration, but if it isn't why bother? For Progressive Rock and Progressive Metal age has no significance - they're not exactly singing about teenage anst and the problems with zits and girls.

I agree. Prog metal is hardly teenybopper music, made by and for that demographic. The average age of DT is at least early forties. They all have families. Porcupine Tree are all in their forties, too, except Richard Barbieri who is in his fifties.

At my last PT concert there was everyone from fans wearing metal band t-shirts, to middle aged guys wearing Pink Floyd and Rush shirts going there with their wives.

Well, I could say the same thing about some classic prog. I have two Marillion albums and I find them incredibly cheesy. I also find that a lot of modern prog which tries to sound like the 70s stuff (retro prog like Spocks Beard, Transatlantic, etc) is very heavy on the cheese factor as well.

If you're a progressive rock fan and don't see the value of an album like, say, Vanden Plas' "Beyond Daylight", or A.C.T.'s "Last Epic", you're just missing out.

That said, there are many non-prog bands that I prefer over many prog-metal acts. Any of you guys like the Mountain Goats? Big smile

The only metal genre I like on this site is  Post Metal. I like the more atmospheric, slugde, stoner , Art metal. Sometimes I still listen to the classics, not much lately. Recently I have been really into all types of jazz , underground hip hop and indie rock. Im not  just stuck on Prog, im not picky about the era of music i choose as long as it is a killer tune.Smile

I like things in any genre but 'good' Metal really excites me most of all.

But ... it also happens to be the genre that suffers the most from countless copy-cats.
Another problem is the sameness of many albums. I miss the variation and dynamics that you find in prog for example.

Good metal? The following maybe

classic M
Black Sabbath
Priest
Zeppelin

thrash M / prog M
Megadeth
Voivod
Coroner
Psychotic Waltz
Nevermore

extreme M
Neurosis
Enslaved
Opeth
Agalloch

goth-doom M
Candlemass
Paradise Lost
Katatonia

Many of those feature on PA. Or should urgently be added Big smile

As to age, I'm 39. Which I think is relevant because I was around 20 in the early 90's which was the top decade for metal.

Heh. I like prog in all it's varieties. I also like jazz. pop, some classical, mainstream rock, synth, new age...just about every style of music will have something that I like.

I tend to prefer sophisticated music though, and prog has a bit more of that than other genres out there :-)

I've got examples of probably every subgenre of prog on my Ipod. I've got Symphonic prog (Yes), prog jazz (Crimson), space rock, prog metal, heavy prog, proto-prog.

And plenty of non-prog rock and metal, too. They're all just subgenres of rock music, really.

I like EVERY genre music that is enough progressive for me (those genres that aren't here in progarchives, and that aren't so progressive - still if it's new or good, it's usually somehow progressive). Also it should be enjoyable in more conservative way, but not always. Also, if it's weird, I usually like it. But I'm a burning soul, so the music should be aggressive - of course the not-aggressive parts of it makes it more aggressive, because by aggressiveness I mean contrasts and basically progressiveness. Though I've listened very much different music.

When I was younger, I was searching for progressive metal etc. Nowadays it's more extreme metal. That's mostly because progressive metal has usually so much basic rock parts. Though, progressive rock has usually too much psychedelic and jazz rock. I listen to them, but I'm always wanting more prog.

Avant-prog has solved my problem in many ways, since there isn't so much progressive symphonic/eclectic prog. Also, I can listen very light music nowadays, but mostly it's nearer to modern classical etc.

But anyway, I actually think many of those who can't stand metal and listens to soft prog, post-rock, art rock, chill-out... are very different proggers than me . I've seen they are more simple and dull and.. well, at least regular. I've seen the phenomenon that under same artist or genre, some are much more popular than others, and it's often those "chill-out" songs/artists. There's much that kind of jazz, indie, folk etc. I mostly hate chill-out. I get very frustrated when the most bad song of some my favorite artist is the most popular.

But I understand it.  I just don't like it, or those people.

Actually every genre has it's chill-outs and aggressions, simplicities and progressivenesses, in a way or another. Maybe I should get into post-rock and ambient more, and Porcupine Tree and light not-so-progressive stuff like that.

All music is equal, though some of it is sh*t - for me.

Some examples of genres that aren't on this site so much but are progressive in some cases: IDM, indie-pop, noise things, all kinds of experimental stuff (not much here, actually - only some main avant-prog - though it's better :P), MPD, modern classical (!!!!), jazzes, atmospheric/experimental doom/black/death metal for example some grindcore and sludge, noisecore and black metal, or something else crossover.... and crossover styles in general.

But at least the most important names of those genres are here, except for classical, jazz, and crossover without big peculiarities. So I use rateyourmusic.com because there's much more genres
