No band grinds my gears more than Nirvana.  I know it's cliche, but I want to rant whenever I see a fellow teenager who thinks that Kurt Cobain is the second coming of Christ.  I also hate how he name-dropped good artists like King Crimson as his influences, when his music sounded NOTHING like theirs.  Bubblegum pop with a feedbacky guitar.

Yeah, I've run across Nirvana heads and was inevitably offended ("better than Pink Floyd,") but you don't hear them like Green Day blared over the store speakers (where I work). Dead

Amazing, but I just googled "Bad Day" to check before I slammed Greenday for it and I found out that its someone else. I guess I hate them a little less...... NOT!

Still have bullevard of broken dreams and September never ends.

I think maybe 'irritates' might be nearer the mark ?Wink

Whatever, there are a few artists who put this rodents 'tits in the wringer' (so to speak) namely:

Dream Theater - the US spelling conceit alone is sufficient without even hearing them
Tool - the irony cannot be lost on its members surely ?, Prog Metal's answer to Whitesnake or Moby Dick
Marillion - an anagram of Am I ill Ron ?
Bauhaus - the Bowie fan club's karaoke team semi finalists 1979
REM - what 'deep' is for non-swimmers
The Stooges - stripping to the waist while drunk becomes performance art
Gong (Radio Gnome Variety) - proof that electricity should be treated like a controlled substance
Frank Zappa (humour) - giggling schoolboys put in charge of detention class
Roy Harper - sweet smelling white liberal angst with unsightly facial hair

Splendid - I wish you'd do some more. The descriptions of Roy Harper and the Stooges, for example, are spot on! Can't agree with you on Gong, though, but maybe that's because I discovered them when I was a spotty schoolboy. As for Zappa, well, SOME of his humour is a little unsubtle, but surely you see the beauty of "The Illinois Enema Bandit" or "Broken Hearts Are for a****les"?

Second coming of Christ?  Of course not.  But I have to say that either you haven't listened to the music in much depth or at least weren't paying attention.  I actually like Nirvana and one of the things that made them appealing was that I could detect a little Frippian influence.  I totally dismissed them when they were all the rage.  Smells is really as close as any of the songs get to bubblegum pop with feedbacky guitar.  LOL

But back to the question, there are none.  If I don't like something there's plenty out there to like so what's the point of getting angry at a band?

Well.. this is my endless post then...

U2... it's not like I have the freedom to ignore them... but they seem to put out the same d*mn song for the last 15 years and nobody has notice it... and I hear them in the radio, in the tv, with friends, with no-so-friends... but is almost impossible to scape from them... yes... Bono's voice and pretentious rockstar attitude annoys me... all the time...

Coldplay... when a singer, sings, well I think everything works... but when a singer weeps and whine and pretend to be cool and politically smart... you have Coldplay...

Nickelback, the Calling and all the bands that sounds the same... I was worry about learning to play the guitar... then after Nirvana's revolution, you don't need to learn to actually play... just learn 3 random chords and you are a musician... just awful...

then, whatever boys band like N'Sync or something like that... Oh... and random hip hop as well... all that collaborations between singers named by two letters like "Dboy feat. Timbaland"... annoying stuff...!!!

I have to agree with Micky that threads like these anger me more than any band angers me.

However, what does anger me are awards programs like the Grammy's that give out all of their awards based entirely on popularity/record company suggested acts.  Although I can't deny that there might be some talent amongst the award winning musicians, many of PA's musicians have more talent in their little pinkies than the combination of all of the award elected nominees combined.  I'm sorry, but dressing up in freaky costumes does not make Lady GaGa experimental or worth listening to.  Beyonce may have a great voice (matter of opinion) and dance moves and costumes that could make porn stars blush, but really, I wouldn't be caught dead with a Beyonce album.  It makes me sad to think that folks like these get so rich putting out garbage, when there are so many great musicians within our ranks that are "Starving" artists.

it angers (well not directly more irritating) me that Gentle Giant is so D#"@mn good Angry so they become almoust impossible to cover their songs or even try to learn them on bass guitar, some riffs are okey but then things changes it it changes fast and i'm out of it.

and I am agry at every metal concert were their is moshpits so short gyes like me can't fully enjoy the concert without being trampled over.

I'd probably have to say the band that pisses me off the most is Pantera. According to tons of metalheads I know they're the greatest contribution to mankind since ever. They're influential no doubt, seeing as they've influenced some of my favorite bands, but I really don't like their music.

It doesn't help that their lead guitarist (good mind you) was killed and now there's an endless fanboy praise for Dimebag. He had chops, but he's not nearly as good as his endless fanboys praise him to be.

I absolutely hate hate hate hate hate The Whirlwind by Transatlantic and so I can't help but feel some antipathy towards the band. As I've said before, I don't think I've ever seen a better example of brilliantly talented musicians playing absolutely terrible music. That it's considered one of the best of '09 just makes me even more bilious.

Here's another vote for Lady Gaga, partly because of the current saturation/overexposure, but mainly for the overt sleaze factor, the idiotic lyrics and the simplistic, unoriginal musical style.

I love Lady Gaga. The only hate I have is with the Grammys as a whole because those are popularity contests...also, I have a beef with prog fans who should know better than to write off entire genres of music such as hip hop because they only heard some singles on the radio.

Just stand away from the pit then I went to see Decapitated last night and I went in the pit towards the end, but during the beginning and middle I just stood back from it because I didn't really feel like it. Worked perfectly for me.

Question also: why is there always some big ass bald guy in every pit going nuts? Do they hire the same guy everytime? Does he get paid for it? Where does he live? Someone please answer.

^ well I usually do that but I'm still not so found of that sort of activity (I have friends  who enjoys it verry much and are not afraid of blood (to get out their inner Viking probably). i guess it has to do about getting out agression and energy (but then start boxing or beggin triathlon)

but yes metal concerts are also good to see from beheind the pit, where the sound is better, I avoided nicely the pit when I saw Slipknot but I went nuts for myself and jumped around and danced (verry fun band even though they are nu -metal band)

I like REM a lot too, though not as much as I used to.

Two former loves of mine who now make me furious are Weezer and Live. Both made three great albums and then went into egregiously sharp decline. Raditude for god's sake.

It even features Lil' Wayne.

Like I said earlier, I was just havin' a bit of fun when I thought of these. There are some REM tracks I really like e.g. Don't Go back to Rockville ? Everybody Hurts, It's the End of the World as We know It and that Chinese Brothers one ? (forget the names) It's really just that 'wetter than a flapping halibut' singer Stipe who rips my knitting. The Ramones -- "Hey look everybody, we f**king suck at everything, can't write music, can't play our instruments, and we should be rich a f**king famous!" Poppycock.

Nickelback -- http://jeffmilner.com/2005/02/this-is-how-you-remind-me-someday.htm - Talk about formulaic .

Agree partialy with you... Disturbed is good (maybe only when I'm mad, but it works) and Oasis is quite good as well... they were just a rock band, not pretentious at all... the rest, yeah.. pure crap...

I forgot about Lady Gaga... she is pretentious and ridicule... and her fans are really not helping her by saying she is "original" or "different"... it's about music, not about awful outfit...

Yeah, getting out aggression is good. I mean when I'm going to see a band I'm going to see the band, not to go nuts. But if the opportunity comes along to shove someone about that you don't know... well I personally wouldn't turn that down

Actually, Oasis are pretty pretentious, I knew the Blur versus Oasis war in 90's Britain. What bollocks it was! Back then it was all about "we're better than Blur, our album's gonna be out before Blur's album, we'll sell more copies than they ever will, no stone roses no oasis!" and all that crap. Then when they were finished fighting Blur regarding band superiority the two brothers started on each other! Wacko

That's what I like about Oasis... Liam Gallagher is really a rockstar, for all people he seems pretentious but he is really a Troll soul man... I mean... all the cr*p that he said to the media and all the posses he uses is only for joking... he really doesn't meant nothing with it... just play with the media and joke around... I think there's no single singer or musician in england that he doesn't bash... but he really doesn't care... he is not pretentious at all... he just play with the media... believe me... I've been exposed a lot to the news about them... and always makes me laugh... people gets angry but don't get that he is just a troll... jajaja...

I agree....I live in the Emerald City, we here do not consider him the 2nd coming of Christ...that came from outside Seattle...probably NY critics. Nirvana is good and I agree you have to dig deep. I'm not gonna dive into where the sound came from here, but it came from the lush green forests we have here....but take a listen to Mudhoney. Wink

Back to the question......I don't get angry at a band.....many pop music I just don't get because we all know these people will be gone next year.....I can appreciate they are trying to make some kind of statement, but I don't get it. Will the Jonas Bros be making albums 30 yrs from now??

As much as I love the Beatles, the Jonas Bros are the early Beatles of today.  The band of good looking young guys that make teenage girls lose their composure.  It'll be curious to see if the Jonas Bros disappear from existence along with their youthful good looks, or if they develop and grow as a band in a way similar to what the Beatles did.  Personally, I see them showing up on reality TV 20 years for now in programs like I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, but who knows.

Why is it that whenever a pretty girl becomes popular in the music world, people start alleging she's a dude? I remember the same thing happened to Gwen Stefani back when No Doubt made it big. I don't understand this.

As far as gimmicks go... *cough* Peter Gabriel *cough*

Specifically my kids said that......not me....I don't think she is a dude. Never heard that about Gwen..she's hot.
IMO, Gabriel was in character on stage....and then "normal" after the shows. yes or no? Alice Cooper...same deal, I doubt he walked around the streets cutting his head off all the time or a snake around his shoulder. Whether on stage or not Gaga is wearing wires and stars all the time......Hey props for her if she feels the need to be always in "character"........but I don't get it.

May be a bit premature to call the Jonas Bros the early Beatles of today until they make a radical change in musical direction like the Beatles did.  I don't know of many bands other than the big B that has done that.  Todd Rundgren had a somewhat brief flirtation with prog with Utopia after a very successful career in pop.  Any others come to mind that I've overlooked?

"I know the Beatles, and you sir, are no Beatles". LOL  It is really their effect on teenage girls that I am referring to.  To be honest, I've only seen them play 1 song and that was live on New Years Day last year because they were on Dick Clark.  The song kind of reminded me of the type of song that the Beatles wrote in their early days.  They will most probably fade into obscurity like most every other boy band that grows up, but ...

Interesting responses. I am a little surprised to see someone say the Smiths. I actually quite like them.

I also used to like Nirvana quite a lot. This was before I became a proghead, of course. I haven't listened to them in ages. I actually preferred the more raw, aggressive sound of Bleach and In Utero to the more commercial Nevermind. But, yeah, a generation of kids thinking Cobain invented rock and roll does annoy me somewhat, when there are so many better players out there.

Green Day annoy me since they became massive. I didn't actually mind them pre-American Idiot when they weren't completely in the mainstream.

I don't hate U2 or Coldplay, per se, but they do write music with no real ambition. It's just formulaic and written for mass consumption, not for the art. A shame, because like Green Day, U2 were OK before they became massive.

Emo, like Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance, annoys me to no end. I just don't get it. I'm not even that old. I'm 27. All these kids wearing eyeliner, it just goes right over my head. And screamo? I find it unlistenable.

I can't really listen to Smells.. anymore because I've heard it so many times. In fact, I barely pull out my copy of Nevermind anymore. Overplayed. I prefer the more uncommercial raw sound of their first and third album.

Similarly, although I love some of Bowie's stuff and the remainder leaves me unmoved, I can only endorse those sentiments re Tool fanboys by saying that the Thin White Duke's terminally trendy  disciples make blinkered anointment an artform. Trapped in a room with one of these critters you will hear things like:

David invented Progressive Rock but doesn't play it cost he thinks it's a pile of hippy w**k
David was the first person to ever use drugs (which he also invented)
David invented sexuality and is biologically both male and female whose respective reproductive organs he own the copyright of.
David has an IQ of 1,489 which makes him the equivalent of a taxicab of academics and speaks 24 languages, 4 of which he invented from scratch (the Germans have never even so much as thanked him for theirs)
David invented hip-hop, drum'n'bass, reggae, krautrock, trance, ambient and psychedelia but is too self-effacing to claim the credit
David can bake, cook, sew, design balloon animals, write novels, direct movies, act and would be a successful stand-up comedian but he doesn't have the time
David invented Iggy Pop but forbids the latter from calling him 'dad'

Gong: Never understood the appeal behind this band. I have listened to both Angel's Egg and You numerous times and still just can't get into their music. I actually prefer the little that I've heard of the Gong-Expresso material. I know their fans are extremely devoted and there are a great many of them here, so I guess I'm on the minority here.

Man, for me, they are playing the same song since they begun... and yes, I know they discography, my brother has like 10 album of them, especially the old ones... but for me it's like the same song over and over again... and according to you, they have 17 years of doing bad music... it's enough to angers somebody don't you think...???

Are we just posting my record collection here?  I mean look at some of the stuff in this thread - (Jonas Bro Lady Gaga, Madonna, etc EDIT NB These are not in my collection oh except Ray of Light)  and then sombody goes and does this!  Leave Gong alone! Actually, they did better music before 2000 and 1993

WordThumbs Up. I saw them live in Rome on the Joshua Tree tour, and they smoked. Then they started going downhill, but this doesn't mean they never made good music.

Would you say that Achtung Baby was a step down from The Joshua Tree? I think that's their crowning achievement.

The 101 black metal bands posing as Satanists and God-knows-what-else really irritates me too. They try and act like they're all underground and opposite to the mainstream but with all the make-up etc, they're just mostly begging for attention.

Yes, there are occasional bands that can create atmospheric music but I can't get into them solely because of the ridiculous lyrics, sometimes even National Socialist in nature.

Oh and I don't understand how anyone can call Vark (aka Burzum) a hero/influence/legend or anything like that. Not only did he admit Nazi views, go around actually burning churches (another stupid idea), but he actually murdered someone in brutal fashion. He quite simply doesn't deserve to be listened to.

While they are not exactly current, Spandau Ballet. For the simple reason that, for those of us stuck in desk jobs who want a career in rock music, the last thing I would do if I get famous is make the band dress in suits that would be appropriate for a job at a bank or as a customer service rep.

In a manner of speaking....

Bono didn't always wear sunglasses indoors and the band once made genuinely inspired music.

People don't even know about October, Zooropa, and probably not even Achtung Baby, which is a far more moving album then many on this website.

People see one South Park episode and that becomes the reality for them.

Man, for me, they are playing the same song since they begun... and yes, I know they discography, my brother has like 10 album of them, especially the old ones... but for me it's like the same song over and over again... and according to you, they have 17 years of doing bad music... it's enough to angers somebody don't you think...???

What? 4 albums in 17 years? It's not like they're crapping out dross all the time. And they've been generic since 1993, but they've still put out good songs.

And I really, really don't think you know their discography. Go ahead and say the songs on Achtung Baby and Zooropa are anything like what came before in their catalog. All you need is ears to tell the difference.

I can assure you Stonebeard that I was being irritated by Boneo long before South Park came along, more for his persona than the actual music. The crucifixion poses for a start, like "I'm suffering for you my children". Way more pompous and pretentious than anything 70s prog came up with IMHO. I thought punk was supposed to have put a stop to that sort of thing?

My favourite U2 story is the one where they played a gig in Scotland:

Bono [stops music and clicks fingers]: "Every time [click] I click my fingers [click] a child in Africa [click]...dies."

Voice in crowd: "Well dont f*ckin do it then!"

I'm gonna agree with Nirvana.  It's another really generic 90's band, that for some reason gets singled at as being way more than they were.  Simple songs, cliche' lyric content, average musicians, repetitive songs....

First: I don't have heard one song of them and then think they are bad... they have been throwing out singles every year and yes, all that songs sounds the same...

Second: if you don't believe I know their discography, that's your problem. You don't live in my house and don't have spend entirely nights hearing them because your brother love them... so, I don't just have heard the singles through the radio and friends, but their albums because of my brother.

Third: I even saw one live DVD from them... and the band sounds OK but Bono is pretentious, and he believes he is a Messiah... his voice is weak and lame... that's my opinion about him as a musician... now, if you like him... whatever... is your problem... I don't and the problem is that I can't scape from all the media attention that they have...

And, I think and most of the fans of U2 always gave me the impression that they really see them with mellancolly, like they really appreciate their teen years and fills like U2 was better... but for whoever stranger to their cathaloge, U2 is always the same... I'm not sure about that, it's about subjective things... but U2 play very pop and weak and that's something that you cannot denied... so...
