By "Mainstream pop" are we talking the most mainsteam of the mainstream, where the "artist" doesn't even write their own music and is pretty much backed by a bunch of goons with money? I would assume so.

Post-grunge, pop-punk, and smooth jazz are the unholy trio. At least the worst mainstream dance-pop can induce a sense of despair that is sometimes desirable; for example, Just Dance by Lady GaGa. However, most of what is called "classic rock" is pretty awful.

Although I'm a bit of a fan of dance-pop (particularly 80s New Wave and pop with a few 90s/00s songs), I pretty much agree.

I would vote, but honestly I can't tell the difference between rap and hip-hop.
Other than that, I really despise smooth jazz, shopping mall muzak, lots of new age, and that meditation/relaxation CDs, especially if they contain flutes and whales.
Apart from that, modern r'n'b (not blues!)/soul/dance/pop stuff is pretty atrocious.

Even that genre is much better than things like reggaeton or tex-mex. If you think of it rationally, pop music, that one you talk about that is a product, is specifically made to please. Musically, all its ingredients are MADE TO PLEASE YOUR BRAIN. The reasons Harry mentions are almost totally subjective and need cognitive processes to come to. The music you really dislike is that one which you don't have to think of reasons to dislike, the one that makes you feel like eating your least favorite food.

I thoroughly enjoy the underground more intellectual breed of hip hop/rap. But if you are referring to mainstream ganster rap, I have a deep loathing for it as it helps spread a cultural aspect that generally produces ego-centric ignorant avariciously hedonistic sex and violence obsessed adolescents enamoured with a materialistic false - masculine image. But in terms of what sounds the worst: probably regaetton in 1st, country in 2nd, and emo/scene whatever in 3rd, most techno 4th. Pop can be pleasing for a half second in a song, occasionally. Oh to hell with it. I can't really decide which genre I would take pleasure in seeing burning in hell first. Quite an excellent thread for petty emotional catharsis of anger, I would say. Thanks.

I don't want to dismiss genres. I find it a little ironic that an "open-minded" progger would just dismiss a whole genre/sub-genre of music.
I can think of a number of rappers that I like for example and few of them are in the mainstream. Some are even, say it quietly, progressive/experimental. Take a listen to Sage Francis for a good example - the stuff is pure poetry.
There doesn't seem to be R&B on the list noticeably (Not like Blues Brothers rhythm and blues, modern rap/pop crossover). Again, I can't really dismiss it all - I think Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and a couple of others are very good at it. However 90% is clearly garbage.
The worst sub-genre of music of all time is probably "crunk-core" - that's the only one I can think of that is inexcusable on every level. Rap and Screamo metal should never ever, ever be mixed quite clearly.

I would agree on the broad genres that people have been saying, such as country, metal, and rap, but I have no problem saying that nothing good can be written within the framework of smooth jazz, post-grunge, and pop-punk, because those are narrow enough definitions that I can say that the tenets of those subgenres are inherently deeply flawed, so in order to fit the criteria of being in that genre, you have to write a bad song.

hip hop, at least to me, is R&B or something very close to it. club dance stuff rap is rap.
In general calling an entire genre worthless is just stupid, but if i had to chose itd be R&B/Hip Hop. although main stream pop like Lady Ga Ga, Fergie and the Jonas Brothers is fit to make me lose my lunch and is a close second.

not worst genre of all time as some people have portrayed it.
There are good artists of every genre, but it can still be your least favorite genre
I like John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline by Dylan, but generally I do not favor country
I too love 80s pop, I really like some of the better stuff, but how does that mean I can't say Mainstream Pop doesn't represent a general trend in music that I do not favor?

Pop. Even though it seems like most rap and hip hop falls under the label of pop as well. I really dislike rap and country, but I see it as somewhat of a difference in tastes, somewhat a lack of skill. Whereas pop music isn't a difference in taste, it just has absolutely nothing to offer that hasn't been done thousands of times.
That being said, if Christmas Music was an option....I'd be on that

That makes sense, considering there have been rock bands with rap (which usually ends up being terrible anyway with the exception of Pain of Salvation, as far as I'm concerned). Rap and hip hop seem to be interchangeable in the mainstream, however.

I know it's hard to believe but not all country is irredeemably wretched e.g. George Jones, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash are all pretty good. (and George married Tammy Wynette so show a little compassion here please)
Most of the rap and hip-hop I've heard does suck grievously but Ice-T, Public Enemy and De La Soul have produced work I like. (and both Lou Reed's Walk on the Wildside and Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues are kinda proto rap I guess)
Ambient is the soundtrack for a flotation tank and tantamount to any old sh*t through a big reverb
Trance is aptly named
Have to say though that my pet hate (subject to change in about 10 seconds) is ANYTHING that assimilates GOTHIC affectations i.e. irrespective of genre, those pale/sepulchral/ sensitive/ dark little luvvies who think vitamin B deficiency, facial immobility, black nail varnish and lipstick are a passport to the demi monde.
Glad I got that off my chest.
Question: is there speed Doom Metal ? (I'm not taking the p*ss)

Early classic rap by the originators is good.....Grand Master Flash, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, Parliament/Funkadelic...even the Beastie Boys......Anything in the 2000's is aweful, 100% distasteful.

Rap, I guess, especially mysogynist "gangsta" "I'm so tough" (c)rap I cannot relate to it in any way, shape or form. (I don't know the difference between rap & hip hop.)
I do like some metal (mainly older metal) but growly/screamy modern metal (especially if the lyrics are corn-pone cliches about demons, blood, death, etc,) drives me up the wall very fast. Still, I can often relate to some of the riffs -- the biggest problem for me is usually the grating vocals and "good vs evil" () lyrics.
Notice that when someone villifies a given genre, someone else in the know will always say "ah, but that's only the commercial stuff you hear on the radio. You should check out...."
I could say the same about the much-maligned country (perhaps the "uncoolest" music to admit to liking around here). I know lots of good "country" artists who do interesting, original things, and/or who are obvious virtuosos on their instruments, but you'll never hear them on mainstream radio.
I discover many on Internet radio station FolkAlley.com. They play a lot of classic folk, folk rock (Fairport, Steeleye, etc) , Celtic, plus country/bluegrass crossover artists, plus some "folkier" rock and even prog. Yes, prog! Recently I heard the Beatles on there ("Mother Nature's Son"), Genesis ("For Absent Friends"), Yes ("The Clap") and a killer, banjo-led rendition of "Long Distance Runaround."

Blues is amazing, so it's a shame that country sucks so much dong.

I know it's hard to believe but not all country is irredeemably wretched e.g. George Jones, Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash are all pretty good. (and George married Tammy Wynette so show a little compassion here please)
George Jones, eh? Ever hear "George Jone Talkin' Cell Phone Blues" by Drive By Truckers (a cool "alt-country band)?
Check out these funny lyrics. Cool song, too:
You were talkin' on that cell phone, driving your Mercedes way too fast All of the sudden there was this dial tone, you hit the pylons on the overpass And your whole life passed before you, from the old days and the honky-tonks... ...to that last shot of vodka; and all them miles in between.
George Jones, better leave that cell phone alone Don't be talkin' as you try to get back home If you don't change your ways my friend You'll be singing duets with Tammy again.
Foot down heavy on the pedal, talking to your daughter in the car Next sound you heard was twisted metal, another dead genius country star Better get your sh*t together, everything's been torn in two Good thing your liver is made of leather, cause we'd all be mournin' the likes of you
(chorus)
And I heard it on the news, he almost stopped loving her today Better stay on that riding lawn mower, if you're going to keep carrying on that way.

^ Can we say really crass things like that here now? Just put in another word for c*** or d***?
Geez -- I (originally) typed the above words in full, and they went through -- don't we still have an auto-censor here?
(Anyway, please read my first post, above.)
Or not -- I don't care. But LOTS of country does not fit the typical commercial-radio-driven preconceptions and predjudices of many here.
(Believe it or not.)

Peter reckons country music is the most uncool genre to admit to having a liking for on here, but the poll seems to point that particular finger at rap
Now, I'm not one to point the finger at any genre in particular (no matter whether it evidently sucks something called a 'dong' or not), but this poll isn't to lambast genres, rather to state which is your least favorite...
Of all those above, I'd probably say punk - always came/comes across to me like wannabe heavy metal bands who don't have the talent/inclination to do it properly - Rap & hip-hop come a close second, although there are certain groups I do like (Boo-Yah Tribe & Cyprus Hill for example... eerrr - Yo!); BYT's 'pickin up metal' is an excellent anti-firearm song from a genre you wouldn't expect such from.
But, hey - that's just me and my humble opinions spouting off; whether or not they suck dong (or any other onomatopoeic bell references ) I'll leave to the masses

^ Okay then folks -- it seems that slang terms for oral-genital congress are fair game, especially if they are little-known in Britain.
T'would seem 'tis of little profit to "kick against the pricks." (Bible, & Wm Shakespeare)
I think disco devours the pork sword, death metal masticates the meat musket, hip hop slurps the steel sausage, commercial country cleans the cunny, rap rides the roto rooter, and trance jumps the johnson.

Sorry, Rap is repulsive for my taste:
Grand MasterFlash is a sampler and sampling is not creativity IMO, turntables are not musical instruments, just artifacts to play what real artists create, the same goes for Run DMC who sampled Hard Rock albums
I find Kurtis Blow as the most boring and repetitive rapper.I ever heard, speaking fast is not singing, not even Eddie Martinez with his support guitar could save this.
The Beastie Boys are a product for me, they played anything that was fashion, only during their hardcore Punk stage sounded decent
Parliament Funkadelic is anything but Rap, yesthey added someHip Hop toiuches, buuit they are a rich expression of Funk, Psyche, Pop, Blues etc they were sampled by rappers but they are an orchestra not rappers
Sorry again, but Rap IMO kills music.

I really like Wyclef Jean, who sings and raps in two different languages, and plays the guitar in way that really compliments the music- a real talent.
And I quite like OutKast as well. Good stuff from them, and quite melodic throughout.

The two outfits I named in my post above, BooYah Tribe & Cyprus Hill use 'proper' instruments, but I can certainly see they'd not be to everyone's taste... but how boring life would be if everyone liked the same music, eh?

everthing that's very shallow, not made with passion/ambition, just written by some very rich person who doesn't give a sh1t about antything else than the money...etc etc you get the drill
i'm not much of a genre listener, i tend to divide music into 3 classes: popular (not pop), prog and experimental. from the poll opinions i can find bands i like from every genre except for country and punk. and 99 % of rap is also complete pillock.
btw, why is prog not an poll alternative?

Hip Hop wins, although I don't know how to distinguish that from Rap very well, since I loathe both so much I never put in any effort to understand the difference...

Hip Hop... I would say Rap but some classic acts like Public Enemy are pretty good...
