A friend who doesn't know much about prog stumped the proghead with this question, what was the first sidelong epic track ever? | Depends what you mean by "epic". Jazz greats like Coltrane were doing side long tracks in the early 60s. |

"In A Silent Way" by Miles Davis is the oldest example that I know. The album is fusion and both sides contain only one sidelong epic. Edit: I'm not sure but In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida might be it. |

Miles had a lot of long tracks. But I would call them jams rather than epics. The Nice Ars Longa Vita Brevis from `68 was certainly one of the first prog epics.

Although they're comparatively short, in 1966 Dylan's Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands and Zappa's Return of the Son of Monster Magnet both took up the final sides of two of the first rock double albums released.
