Forgive me if this has been discussed before.

It's my opinion, as I'm in the process of reviewing my Miles Davis CDs, that any album, despite how incredibly amazing it may be, that has no prog elements, should not be given 5 star ratings.

5 stars is described here as "a masterpiece of progressive rock music".

How then does an album which is nor prog, fit that description?

I attempt to take that into account, and note it on the review.

^ You could use the rating guidelines given on the Prog Related and Proto-Prog album pages which do not mention "Progressive Rock", however, if the artist is in a Prog category then they should be rated for their Prog-ness to be fair to their Prog albums.

That's essentially what I try to do.  It's sometimes a diifcult balance.  A so-so prog album can end up with the same rating as a great non-prog album.

But then, other than making notes in a review, the only other option, non-feasable, of course, would be to set up a convoluted rating system in which album quality and progness are separated.

My view is as long as you explain your self in the review you can rate an album however you like. Without that explanation giving a non Prog album 5 stars would be misleading.

That's fair, Dean.

But for me, I still won't give a non-prog album 5 stars.  The closest I have come is Miles Davis "Circle In The Round", which only has one true fusion song on it, but does chronicle Davis' transition from pure bebop to electric fusion.  It's the gradual electrifying that I find so fascinating in that collection.  That and the music is great throughout.
