Sorry if this has come up before.  I really have not been in here in a while.

My cd player broke and it is hard to find a cd player these days.  I have to go to a high end shop or a thrift shop. I told someone I wnated a cd player and they thought it was retro.Shocked

I'm an old guy, relatively, and like to hold onto something before I play it.  A good package can also give some information you otherwise would not get.  The download world seems centered around individual songs, but I've always liked albums - I have never bought a single song in any form.

It's very rare for me to download anything.  I buy the CDs unless they're incredibly overpriced, in which case I hope the band is on eMusic.  If not, I wait for a good opportunity to get the CD for something I'd consider reasonable.

I really "need" a hard copy.  Even the little bit of stuff I have downloaded first, I still needed a hard copy.  I do expect a lyrics booklet, when applicable, and some quality album art, even though the CD format has made this more challenging.

I only buy cds.

I would download songs that artists made available on their website and then buy the full cd at a certain point but I never cherrypicked songs. I always wanted the album.

But these days I am more casual about music and only like a select few metal or prog bands.  I got into prog through metal.  I wonder if it is time to change.

I do both, but I still prefer to buy LPs over CDs.  I have many CDs but I don't really like CDs that much (so lame that most of mine have little to no extras). DVDs I'm keener on (but I expect lots of bonus features). Commonly I'd rather pay for digital downloads.  I'm kind of surprised that CDs are still as popular as they are.

I am still addicted to packaging. I love album art and I have not found digital media to be physically gratifying in the way a booklet is.

I do buy the physical thing, if the price is right.

There's almost no chance of me paying for an mp3 only album.

I buy cd's mostly, but I have also downloaded music sometimes. I much prefer buying cd's. The sound quality of the cd's is much better in my ears than most of the music I downloaded. Plus, as some before me remarked, I would like to have something in my hands / the real thing.

90 % bought CD's. The other 10% I got from a semi-legal Russian mp3 site where I paid about 15% of the store price. It gives me a better feeling to at least pay something for it (in the hope that the artists receive at least some of that low price). If I REALLY like an album I absolutely want the CD if it were only for the booklet as an extra.

I only buy CD's.
- They are of better quality than a downloaded song.
- I like to have a CD with the booklet and things like that.
- I think illegal downloading could be called 'stealing'.
- I'm too lazy to learn how and where to download.

Posted By: Mr ProgFreak
Date Posted: July 14 2009 at 07:15
^ it's good that you see illegal downloading as what it is. :-)

Have a look at eMusic.com though ... legal downloading can be easier than you think. The downloads also cost considerably less than the full CDs ... my current approach is that I simply buy a lot less CDs than I used to, and make up for that by also downloading some albums. The benefits:

1. I still get to listen to many albums
2. I still keep expanding my CD collection (just at a slower pace)
3. It costs me much less than if I got all the stuff on CD

:-)

I don't like mp3's. I feel as if I don't own anything, even if I have paid for it and, actually, own it. I spend considerable amounts on CDs and vinyls, mostly because what I want and don't have yet are only available through imported CDs or rare vinyls. For you to understand the situation, imagine yourself paying US$60 per cd, as an average.

I generally still buy CD's by buying or ordering from my local CD store.

If I can't find the hard copy that way, I will check out iTunes and buy from there.

Exhausting that I'll see if I can use some other manner if the CD is out of print. (ie eBay, "etc")

Mostly used LPs, some used CDs, some new CDs.
But most of my "new" music is downloaded. With the higher bit rate offerings now available, and the much better pricing, added to the fact that I can burn the music to a CD, and many a download now includes cover art, and even booklets (Ostara is a perfect example), I see no reason to pay twice (or more) as much to get the same "physical" product.

Indeed, I would already have the new IQ, but the album is not available for download in or from Canada.

I'm with you on that.

I'll buy a download if I must.  I've got Porcupine Tree's Futile.  It came with album cover art so I made my own hard copy.  I did pay for In Rainbows but wound up buying a hard copy.  I got Marillion's Happiness for free and bought the hard copies later.  Same deal with NIN's The Slip.  Someone linked me to what I believe was an illegal download of Insurgentes in advance of it being available for purchase, bought the hard copy, too.  Have to do right by the artist.

I mainly download stuff these days.  I occasionally buy CD's and I buy the odd second hand vinyl.  I have no attachment to CD's as I've always hated them really- the only good bit being you don't have to turn them over - vinyl is better in every way.  I am not bothered about the artwork as it's just about always rubbish on CD.

But if I like something I'm still (always have been ) too impatient to wait for the CD either from a real shop or ordering on line.  I WANT IT NOW! Big smile

Mainly legal downloads from Amazon or band sites these days. I don't get hung up on the hard copy - the album is still mine even though it is on the PC and the artists get their royalties. I also find the MP3 quality far superior.

Since coming to this site I have also started listening to a lot more music, much of it new, via Last FM. I simply cannot afford to buy all the music I want with a young family, and this is a great way of listening while I work or relax.

Jewel cases are the most brittle fragile things in existence.  Angry  But I would still rather have a physical thing which holds my music than an ephemeral download.  I'm not adverse to doing it - I just haven't found proper reason yet.

Sometimes I will buy CDs but mostly I will just buy the vinyl. That way I can rip the vinyl over to my computer and enjoy in MP3 and on my turntable. I usually look out for whichever option is cheaper, CDs or vinyl. More often than not the vinyl is cheaper. And of course there is that experience of buying a vinyl that I never really experienced, considering I was born in the 90's!

I always buy albums on cd and have never bought a download. I will download though for samples and such. One issue I have with IPods and harddrives is all your music is in one pot. If my cd palyer breaks down use another or if the cd is faulty put another on but with IPods you do the lot in one hit. When I travel a discman is better for me as if the discman breaks down I can just pick up another but if the IPod does it you have lost all your music with it and have to wait to re format it or whatever and download the songs back into it. One other moan while I am in formWink ( Grumpy old man) burnt cds don't last which is what you get with downloads at the end of the process if you want to take the music from your computer and are not putting in an IPod or phone etc.

My youngest though is the complete reverse to me and she is right into downloading but she only listens to singles primarily. Old burnt cds everywhere with no names or anything on them. She is organisedLOL

I try to avoid downloading music, but I will download if I can't find it in stores or if its too pricey on amazon. It is usually quite rare that I do end up downloading however.

I usually buy CDs, listen to music on last.fm, or trade CDs with my friends and upload music onto Itunes.

And TC, I also had a CD player for a long time. I got an Ipod for Christmas and I've since transferred over to that for the most part. Smile

^ in the "old days" you couldn't take your whole collection with you anyway. Today, if you want a backup ... get yourself a cheap mp3 stick with 4GB. Then if you iPod breaks (which is unlikely anyway), you'll still have some dozen albums.

Though not directly related to the topic and poll, one thing's for sure I haven't been buying CDs like I used to due to budgetary reasons and I'm running out of space to keep them.  Didn't get a damn thing last month.  I decided to treat myself to the new Phideaux and try a Discipline album this month (thanks again Phideaux for the recommendation).
This year - 23 titles so far.
2008 - 60
2007 - 114
2006 - 104
2005 - 123
2004 - 133
2003 - 98

I hate how people claim that an MP3 album costs as much as an actual disc.

I will continue to buy CD's, if only for the reason that a sufficiently big collection of music just would need too much space to be stored on a computer, though of course the capacity of hard disks is increasing more and more. But I actually prefer to use the hard disk space for programs, not for storing music..
I have to admit though that collecting the music on shelves requires a lot of shelf space meanwhile.
And last but not least I am a physical person. I like toi hold the cover of an album in my hand and take a look at it.
Cover art will actually die out completely should MP3s replace CDs completely. Most probably even the album format will die out too; artists will just upload their latest recordings. Some may like that; I don't.

^ I don't think that album cover art will die ... it is always useful to promote the music, which has always been its primary function. Good cover art can attract new listeners in a record store as well as on a website.

If MP3s become the single or at least main medium for music, then there won't be any albums anymore, and hence no cover art.

I was kind of thinking as some have adapted to smaller format of CDs for album art, digital music files will come with something electronic you can view on your computer or your portable music player.  I would not be as happy with mine if I couldn't see the cover art.  Possibly even holographically projected cover art at some point.

Nonsense. Singles have been around since the 70s, but that didn't stop people from buying LPs. Similarly people will continue to download albums. At least in the interesting genres ... Big smile

A lot of the music I listen to isn't in print anymore.   Rather than pretend like it doesn't exist, I'd rather download the albums.  Also, I don't have much spending cash because what little money I do have tends to go towards "social" activities...like golf and beer.

But that's different. Albums were the only way to acquire certain songs, since they did not come out in the single format. But if bands now just upload MP3s and you pay for downloading them they will be not in an album context anymore.

Never bought a download, never will. I'm from the old school and like a hard copy not to mention better sound quality.

I mostly buy CD's/ I try to get them for no more than ten bucks, which I can find a majority of what I want, including new releases for that price. I rarely pay over ten unless its something i really want and can't find for cheaper.

I do some downloading, but for the most part I really like having a tangible collection of music. I like to look at my organized collection of albums. I like having lyric books to read and art work to admire.

Both eMusic and Amazon MP3 make certain tracks only available in the full album download - you can't purchase them separately. It doesn't apply to every album though ... I guess that it's up to the artists to decide whether they want to emphasize/enforce the album structure or not.

^ 176.4 kHz ... sounds a little bit odd to me. Typically modern productions are recorded at 96 kHz or 192kHz.

I've never bought a download. Can anyone give me one good reason for doing so? I still listen to cassettes. I would like to transfer them but do not know how, as I use a laptop and they have a reputation for being sensitive to amplified recordings. One of these days I'll start a thread on this subject or has somebody already done so?

Where in the hell do you live? DVD players are perfectly capable of playing CDs, and mp3 players can be the portable form of that.

I don't really download anymore, but I can still use my Zune to house my CDs is a portable format. I don't see how it is is that difficult.

Because it is hard for me to find obscure albums and artists where I live, I generally download those which I can't buy/or would have to order from overseas, then order them when I can. However I still buy cds when I get the chance.
