Hello Jazz Fans. Feel free to post any of your jazz opinions and experiences here.
I saw the Dave Brubeck Quartet yesterday for free at the Toronto Jazz Festival and it was great. Amazing Opener as well (Brandi Disterheft Sextet) with a very laid back Miles Davis feel coupled with stinging latin as well.

You experienced wonderful live. The fact that Bill Brufore was influenced from the performance of Joe Morello is a famous story. Original "Take Five" is certainly a masterpiece. By the way, I think that "Take Five" of Carmen McRae and George Benson is also wonderful. |

^Amen, Joe Morello is a giant. Every drummer needs to know Joe. My father in law said he used to go see Brubeck whenever he came to Boston. He told me a while back that he thought some of my drumming reminded him of Morello. I've never been more flattered!
I'll always remember the interview I read where someone asked Richard Rogers if he minded that Dave Brubeck was messing around with his song (My Favorite Things). Rogers replied that when Dave Brubeck played your song it wasn't messing around! -------------

another great Brubeck one is Brandenburg Gate Revisited I grew up hearing jazz every day cause my mom loved it, there was also a very good local jazz radio station, a rarity nowadays |

Well, we get two jazz stations down here, 88.1, which is the more lounge type (used to have a blues show on the weekends, which is how I found the station), so it's fun, and, uh, 94.7, which is the Kenny G/Ralphs supermarket jazz station. Pretty good for putting you to sleep on long car rides.

I've been listening to jazz for several years now. It's such a daunting genre for people wanting to get into it first time. It took me a long time to figure out exactly what kind of jazz I liked. Basically I got into the fusion groups first like Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, and Return to Forever. Oh, and of course Bill Bruford's Earthworks. Eventually I made my way to the ECM record label and artists like Pat Metheny and Jack DeJohnette. Lots of great stuff to be explored there. Wow!! I didn't even know Brubeck was still going!! That's great to hear. I have yet to go see any live jazz, but I look forward to my first experience (whenever that happens). |
