Topic: Will the world end in 2012?

Subject: Will the world end in 2012?
Date Posted: May 04 2009 at 19:05
The most recent discussion on this topic is a year old, so I thought I'd start a new one.
This comes up a lot. How the long count calendar ends 12-21-2012, and some quotes from the bible about when we are near the end. The Yellowstone supervolcano is expected to erupt soon, a nuclear war could happen, population growth could become a problem, and computer intelligence doubles every 1.5 years, so there are a lot of factors going towards the end being near.
Do you believe it will end, and do you care? Do you think it will happen naturally or man-made?
Personally, I think it is a possibility. I think something good could happen 2012. The end of the calendar doesn't necessarily mean an apocalypse. Overall, there are enough factors to make me worry, but I try not to think about it.
Your thoughts?

I don't think will end in our lifetime- Im pretty damn sure of myself too.
If it does end in 2012, I sure hope Rush releases a new album beforehand- I'll die happy.

Damn, if we were just 100 years ahead it could end in 2112. That'd be a coincidence speaking of Rush.

I hope we all get to see KC live again. I don't think money is an issue with it, it all depends on the mood Fripp is and if he wants to deal with it all again. We're more likely to see him go solo again rather than in an Crimson incarnation.

The date will pass just like all of the other "apocalyptic" dates over the past centuries, with lots of media hype preceding and lots of people feeling silly afterwards.
The planet is in the process of a slow death as we speak, with species loss increasing and population levels eventually moving beyond sustainable. But more people are interested in myths (rapture anyone?) than reversing the human footprint. I see some evidence that this is changing in young people so I'm trying to be hopeful....we'll see.
But no, don't lose sleep about 2012. Just remember how many times before people have been convinced about this nonsense, only to wake up the next day (except for the suicide cults!)

I remember Y2K. It was kind of funny how many people hid in their basements with enough food to last for months, only to find that it a bunch of crap.
I don't think the world will end I'm just considering the possibility. In all fairness, everything has to come to an end...

Perhaps, though I'd like to think we could go on indefinitely if we learned sustainability and how to solve the wars issue....eventually moving into other parts of the universe through scientific discovery. I'm convinced that is possible, but I'm not optimistic enough that humans can pull it off, superstitious, gluttonous, and war-mongering as we tend to be in recent centuries.

War isn't the problem in the past few centuries. War has been going on as long as people have been on the face of the earth. The problem is, with nuclear weapons, and maybe more deadly ones in the future, we have powerful enough weapons to possibly end the world.

So far as I see it then, the Yellowstone supervolcano will erupt, the resultant earthquake will make all superpowers fall onto their big red "NUCLEAR ARSENAL DO NOT PUSH THIS BUTTON" buttons, the risen Christ will emerge from the ocean on Atlansis's roof (thus proving Pallas almost right, dammit ) and the owner of a small deli in downtown Chicago will reveal himself to be the b*****d son of Elvis Presley and Nostradamus (a crossbreed made possible by an accident with DNA and a time machine) & say "I told you so"

Agreed. It's only the abbreviated long count that ends in 2012 anyhow, not the full one.
See the part about the higher order cycles. 2012 would have been a huge clebration for the Myans like a millennium party, not a doomsday event.
The idea that the long count runs out in 2012 and it'll be doomsday was an idea cooked up by some baked hippies back in the 60s.

Perhaps I should write Fripp a letter giving him details on the importance of a KC concert.I can't imagine he receives many fan letters involving KC and the apocalypse.Anyhow about the cults, that's quite a worry this surely is going to be a huge day/year on a cults calendar.I hope nothing comes of it.

I've done some reading about this in the past. The chance is pretty small, but even if it were to strike earth, I'm being optimistic that we'd have technology that could somehow have a gravitational pull and direct the asteroid away from earth.

That's the one area of physics I wouldn't pin any hopes upon. The only mass big enough to exert an influence would be the moon or something from the asteriod belt - and we are not going to develop the tech to drag either of those around space in the next 27 years

I know NASA monitors these sorts of things, and they'll be able to detect any "dinosaur killer" impacts several months (if not years) out. The idea is then that we smack it with something while it's far away, changing it's trajectory ever so slightly. If you do it with enough advance notice, it won't take much force to adjust even a huge body's trajectory so it will avoid the Earth.

Fascinating that this comet is named 99942 Apophis (666 upside down and inverted + the ultimate answer to the ultimate question + the Greek name for the Egyptian god Apep - the uncreator) and that the comet would hit on Easter Sunday, April the 13th. That's just too good right there. Gonna have to go reread Revelations and/or listen to Supper's Ready.

Let me just say that anyone who has researched this 2012 prediction knows that many people predicted the same exact date over the centuries. It has come up quite a few times, and always in a negative, end-of-the-world light. All of the people who predicted it didn't know each other, and lived in completely different countries/centuries, and a computer program originally designed to predict stock market crashes also pointed to 12-21-2012 as being a cataclysmic event. So if this is all just some big consiracy, it's pretty damn elaborate. That being said, I'm not really worried about it. If the world does end then, there is nothing we can do about it, so I say enjoy life while you can, and after all, isn't that what anyone can do?

She plays the drums, so I assume she would.

The only thing more appropriate would be if it hit on a Friday 13th.

Definitely not. The end of the world is unpredictable for any human being. The long count of the Maya calendar is not a standard because no Maya was present when the world was created. Moreover, the date in the tzolkin/haab cycle (approximately 52 years) does not correspond to what should be a re-creation date according to the Mayan belief, so if there should be any Maya's nowadays, they should have a party and not fear.
I think that no remarkable day on any calendar can be pinpointed as a likely day for the end of the world (some people were afraid of 01-01-2000, less than 10 years ago). I think that the only remarkable source of information concerning the end is the Bible, which does not mention the USA or one of its volcanoes. But I believe that the world that we know is moving to its end with increasing speed, though I don't throw a guess when it will happen.
This is my 1000th post on this forum (excluding the ones I've deleted and the one or two which have been moderated away). Don't take this as ominous .

Deforestation wasn't a problem then.
Any time before the Industrial Revolution this was irrelevant. Astronomy was almost always relevant to mankind, and the Mayans had a good understanding on that subject, but maybe not deforestation.
You're right, this probably doesn't mean anything, I'm just stating the facts.

Well we don't actually know what caused the collapse, but I think wondering whether cutting down all the trees would cause a problem is easier than predicting the end of days. ;-)

|
Population growth could be a problem. Too late - it already is.
Computer intelligence doubles every year - whilst human intelligence halves every year.
Let's face it. The world isn't going to end in a calamity, it's already started.

God has a sick sense of humour. Why end it now? Push the envelope. Sort of hopping up your car to see how fast you can make it go before you blow the engine. He probably wakes up in the morning saying to himself, "I wonder what they did last night." Sort of leaving your dogs alone in the house for over 24 hours. On the seventh day he must have sat back with a nice cool lager and said to himself, "There, finished, let`s see how long it`s going to take them to screw it up completely." Sort of letting a family of racoons loose in a supermarket.
God `s not finished with us yet. So much left to screw up.
