I'm a real newbie so this may be covered somewhere else in these pages but the prog I love is the emotional, gut-wrenching material that leaves you stunned and drained, rather than the more technical, tricky time signatures type stuff. So not so much Yes and Dream Theater but more Pink Floyd and Marillion. The sort of albums I mean are Animals/The Wall/Final Cut, Brave, Misplaced Childhood, OK Computer, Operation Mindcrime, Pawn Hearts and Peter Hammill's Over. You guys really know your stuff so any other recommendations out there?

The middle section to 'Heart of the Sunrise' by Yes is among the most beautifully emotional prog songs I have heard. So the emotion isn't that far to be found if you are familar with Yes.
I do not have the knowledge of some on this site but I have recently enjoyed Premiata Forneria Marconi's Storia Di Un Minuto. A nice blend of electric and acoustic with some very emotionally driven instrumental and vocal performances.
Also, Trespass by Genesis might be what you are looking for. Peter Gabriel's vocals have an incredible amount of passion and feeling.

I would recommend checking out Pavlov's Dog, very emotional, layered material, relatively easy to digest. I would go with Peter Gabriel's UP. My favorite solo album of his, certainly not a prog album, but I really think it describes what you're looking for. Supertramp, particularly Crime of the Century should do justice also. Any assuming you have no aversion to "newer" music, the perfect band for you is The Dear Hunter. Simply one of the best bands doing what they do right now. Really heartbreaking stuff achieved through simply structures. Diverse instrumentation, vocal harmonies, dense music. You don't like Yes? If you haven't already, listen to Close to the Edge. The second track is absolutely beautfiul. As for other bands, seconding PFM and I will also recommend King Crimson's debut as it's the most obvious. |

DT has quite a few emotional songs, like Vacant, The Answer Lies Within, Finally Free, Disappear, Wait for Sleep and Space-Dye Vest.
Anyway, go for Green Carnation's Acoustic Verses and A Blessing in Disguise. ------------- yeah |

Saying that technical music is necessarily not emotional=fail. Good, well executed technical music is emotional as anything else, it's just a different emotion/set of emotions. Listen to Chopin and tell me you're not moved by that. While I'm here, the entire post rock and post metal genres are based on minimal music technique structured stuff, so no solos or hyper tech playing. Check that stuff out. -------------

| I strongly second the recommendation for Pendragon's "The Window of Life". It's not the most experimental out there on a purely technical level, but it does raise the bar in terms of the emotional range and complexity of neo-prog. "Ghosts" and "The Last Man On Earth" manage to take you through a completely bewildering number of moods. |

In terms of emotions, I would recommend the beautiful Italian genre. Nothing gets really close IMHHO. Not precisely the famous trio (PFM, Banco & Le Orme) but other ones, less known but so remarkable. ------------- ZowieZiggy |

An obscure band, my vote goes for Time Of Orchids. Maybe it's just me but i find songs like 'All we Ever Wish' and 'Meant' oddly moving. They're probably the most emotive math-rock/experimantal band I've heard in any case. Also try out Aereogramme who I don't believe are featured on this site but 'Sleep and Release' i n particular is full of those 'gut'wrenching' moments |

Instead of recomending bunch of bands I will stick to one :
Spirogyra !
Try their compilation "A Canterbury tale" that consists all of their 3 studio albums and some more bonus tracks and I'm quite sure you won't be disapointed (and I also have problems with some of Yes output for the same reasons like you and love to death Over so I think I know what your'e talking about). ------------- omri |
