BTW easy to get to Shoreham BY Sea ? I suppose it's cheaper to get a B&B in SBS then London.

It'll definitely be cheaper to get a B&B there than in London. And probably a lot nicer too, as it's an old seaside town. A quick timetable search suggests it takes about an hour to get there by train from London. I'd say go for it! |

Hell, at least you've seen them before. GG had disbanded before I was even born, hence me being super-excited about this gig. It might be my only chance to ever see anything even approximating Gentle Giant live - a chance I thought I'd never get anyway! |

It may well be a possibility. Here's what Malcom Mortimore said of the project (apparently posted on ProgressiveEars): To all our friends, After all the interest and encouraging comments from those attending the Rentle Giant gig and also those commenting on the YouTube snippets there has been further developments ....... Gary, myself and the boy's have been joined by Kerry, with the addition of the singer Mike Wilson. Rentle Giant is now "Three Friends", a name chosen so as to not offend the legacy of Gentle Giant but hopefully to add to it by playing faithful interpretations of Gentle Giant's music. We also hope that new music will be created as a result of this group. Our first gig as "Three Friends" is 16th April 2009 at The Ropetackle Arts Centre, Shoreham on Sea, England, UK. I've got room in the basement for a sleepover if they want to play Moncton. And an above ground pool to relax in after the gig ... I am coming all the way up to London over Easter [ yes, that's right from here downunder ] but will have ventured off to Italy by then . What a BUMMER !
Only prog I can find in London over this period is a GAZPACHO concert at Islington. Does anybody know of anything else ? My wife and I will be there from 7 to 11/4. I'm afraid Tina Turner does nothing for me even at our respetive ages ! ! Not that she ever did . ------------- Looking still the same after all these years... mrgd |

I'd love to go, but SBS is about 160 miles from my hometown, so a 320 mile round trip on a Thursday (aka work) night; I know I should go but, my age & lethargy says otherwise... -------------

Before Three Friends came into being, there Rentle Giant, which did a single gig last October. It was a five man band (Three Friends will add Minnear and the vocalist) and several videos are on You Tube. The quality of the perfomances on You Tube is quite good. And they played some songs that I do recollect Gentle Giant playing live (e.g., His Last Voyage).I believe it will be a very good band.

As GG were my favourite band of the '70s, this does my old heart good to see. If I were still in the UK, with 5 less children and the bank balance of when I was footloose and fancy free, I'd do all that I could to be there. Shoreham-by-Sea seems a little low-key, but perhaps suits a first time out. I expect it is near where one/all live? Not a Shulman brother in sight but I think that very unlikely ever, so Three Friends is pretty good (hopefully excellent). I read somewhere a while back that Kerry Minear was giving piano lessons to kids in Birmingham (West Midlands), which made me kind of sad, but I guess the reality of life after a modicum of success 30+ years ago. The recorded evidence of his and Gary Green's talent is better than a thousand words I could write, so I wish them luck, await reports and hope the project moves into the future as Malcolm suggested. ------------- There's an angel standing in the sun... |

they will do more uk gigs surely?! travelling hundreds of miles on a thursday to somewhere that, despite sounding lovely and quaint, i have never heard of is awkward. i would make that journey for GG in any form but i have an event to put on the next day. grrrrr
i am going to have to wait for the, surely inevitable, northern dates.

Not that I claim Three Friends a mere tribute band - I just think that it would almost impossible to make an imitation of the old Gentle Giant, switching instruments in course of single song, turning from rock band to a medieval band to a jazz group - but I'd likely see someone trying to do shows in the vein of the Gentle Giant gigs. That really is a challenge
Their versatility on instruments made Emerson Lake & Palmer look humble, a bunch of poor show-offs  ------------- yet you still have time! |

I have always wanted to see, as close to as I could get, Gentle Giant play live so when this gig was announced I bought my ticket instantly, even though it meant travelling from Liverpool on a school night. Anyway I learned last night that a job has come up for the rest of the week and I simply cannot go and I am devastated. I was really looking forward to the whole event but, in these current troubled days, I cannot refuse the work. So, to get to the point, I have a ticket for tomorrow's Three Friends show that some lucky blighter can have for free, just give me a shout. If you are too far from Liverpool to pick it up I will see if something can be left at the venue to enable you to gain admittance. Please contact me if interested, as I say you can have the ticket for nowt, I just don't want it to go to waste! |

The 3 Friends gig (last night) was the best prog gig I have seen for 17 years and I've seen all the greats since 71. Totally amazing.

I second that Dave!! what a wonderful & amazing band,Gary & Malcom& kerry have put together.the set list was perfect, highlight's for me were 'The House The Street The Room',Three Friends , Prologue & Giant, well pretty much all of it.! I So good it should or deserve to be going out under 'Gentle Giant'!
I would love to see them at The royal festival hall & record a new album with this line up

What can i say,waited 28 years for something like this and i certainely wasnt disappointed,spoke to gary before the show and he said he wanted to offer the fans something different by playing classic tracks that had never been played live before,it was an unbelievable setlist with mister class/three friends,advent of panurge,pentagruels nativity etc stunning. they had so much enthusiasm and energy and the material sound totally fresh and vibrant,i didnt expect neal morse lookalike singer to fill the shulmans shoes but he was excellent like dave said,one of the all time great gigs lets hope for more and a new cd Neil |

It was awesome. I never thought I'd get the chance to hear ANYONE play those tunes live, let alone any actual members of the original band! Hearing Gary Green and Kerry Minnear playing live was... well, quite literally a dream come true. Malcolm Mortimore did a superb job of drumming on all the material recorded after he'd left GG – he made a very interesting comparison to John Weathers' style. The additional musicians were also fantastic – especially the bassist, who was the only member of the group that didn't seem to make a single slip-up all evening... at least, not that I noticed anyway! The biggest surprise of the evening was probably Kerry Minnear performing “Think of Me With Kindness” - I'd eversoslightly half-hoped he might sing a bit live but I didn't expect that at all! Fingers crossed, this is just the beginning, eh? The set-list, for those who care about that sort of thing: Prologue Playing the Game The Advent of Panurge Pantagruel's Nativity Just the Same Think of Me With Kindness The House, The Street, The Room The Boys in the Band His Last Voyage In a Glass House Mister Class and Quality/Three Friends Free Hand Giant Peel the Paint By the way, for those of you who missed this gig, I've noticed that some mp3s are already doing the rounds... |

That's a great set list; some of my favorites that I could only wonder why they were never played live.
And most of Three Friends (4 of 6) was played. How appropriate!
I do hope this lasts. It would be nice if somewhere an official live recording were released.

Agreed. One can but hope. As for why some of them weren't played live back in the day, I think that's largely down to the technological limitations of the time. Whilst they were able to do all kinds of things in the studio, they were always limited with what they could play live. |

Everytime I read that setlist I can't stop salivating. Especially since they played my all time favorite giant song...The boys in the band! Glad to see Peel The Paint in there as well, that guitar solo part must have been orgasmic to see live.

One thing GG did back in the 70s, was modify their arrangements somewhat in live versions to get around some of the difficulties. They did do a some of the challenging pieces live in some form (e.g., So Sincere, Knots, On Reflection).
One thing I am especially happy about was that Think of Me With Kindness was played. It was the first GG song I shared with my teenage son, who has grown to enjoy the work of the band.

Great to meet you at the B&B after the amazing Three Friends gig. Myself and Al left soon after you to get up to Liverpool for what I believe will be a monthly prog night at the monochrome club. Diagonal were amazing by the way! Impressed with Balloons and The Laze too at the same show. You mentioned that there are some downloads of the GG gig. Please let me know how to get them.

I was very pleased when i heard that Three friends would play in my hometown Gothenburg, Sweden saturday 25th of april. It was the third concert ever for the band, and what a marvellous concert! Me and my two friends (yes, we were three) was totally in agreement: this was one of the best concerts that we ever had visited. It was obviuos that the material had aged well, it was played in a somewhat updated manner with no flutes, strings or trumpets, but it sounded very, very good. The singer Wilson var amazingly good and sang the material sometimes better than Derek Shulman did in the 1970´s.
I hope that this band will continue the tradition of Gentle Giant music in the 21st century. ------------- Kung Bore |

It would be awesome if they could release at least a Playing the Fool part 2. I liked the original, but they were definitely limited by Tech back then. However, if they decided to record a new studio album, I sure hope it's not just a rehash of their old work |
