There are a number of albums that I'd really like to get (from reviews on this site mainly) that are either unavailable or monstrously expensive imports.

What are members' experiences with good sources to buy prog albums that may not be easily available and the best way to get albums available only as imports?

P.S. I know this is probably covered but I didn't find it doing a quick search.

The only way is to build a time machine and revisit th `70s. Seriously, this is a tough one. I``ve been buying albums for abou 35 years and it just makes me shake my head when I see some of these old albums going for ludicrous prices over the internet. I still get lucky every now and then with second hand stores but they`re even a thing of the past for good deals unfortunately.

http://gemm.com/ -  GEMM is pretty good for hard to find vinyl and CD's from most genres. Another good one is http://audiophileimports.com - Audiophile Imports , which is geared more toward jazz-fusion but is still a fabulous source for great music nonetheless.

I never bought Vinyl Confessions by Kansas, thinking I could always pick it up used.

How wrong I was.  Confused

People want big money for their used copies now.

If you regularly search on eBay it's often possible to find quite rare albums for reasonable or low prices.

Yes, there is the occasional luck on eBay, but you don't always get the best selections as far as quality of the albums' condition go... So many neglected/abused records! Cry

What really ticks me is that these morons selling albums at ridiculous prices over the net haven't a clue about nor any passion for music otherwise they wouldn't be selling the music at these crazy prices. Wounded Bird Records http://www.woundedbird.com/ - www.woundedbird.com/ have re-released many albums previously not available or discontiniued on CD at reasonable prices. I keep checking them. Although they don't do orders ouside of the US I order through my local retail record HMV and have never paid more than 20 bucks for a new CD. Over the net you can order their stuff internationaly through http://www.artist-shop.com/wounded - www.artist-shop.com/wounded

For this alternative means are necessary. There is a torrent out there for Vinyl Confessions- only one seed, so you better hurry.

I don't know if there's any plans for a remaster of that one, but rest assured if one is issued the prices for old vinyls will drop.  I still have all my old vinyls and the only one's I'd consider selling are those that don't have great covers or I've replaced with a remastered CD.  But, I have no more love of the LP over the CD than I do for the VHS over the DVD.  But for those of you who would prefer an LP over a remastered CD, one of these days I plan to put the ones I would part with on the market and I will let you guys know first.

Check out the second hand shops. Many have gone over to selling mostly collectibles (chotkes ?, posters, t-shirts), but there should still be some that carry vinyl. Indeed, our local one now makes more money on LPs than CDs. But he also is big time into the collectibles, along with PC & Video games. The best part - unless it's a very well known "treasure" - he sells it at regualr prices.
I picked up Le Match - Legendes last year for $12CAD. Sean Trane told me that collectors ask for several hundred. I sold it back for $6.
The hard part is going through the entire LP collection, and trying to guess which ones are prog. Then you can check them out for reviews here or elsewhere.

Build a time machine. Seriously though,  from my experience patience is a virtue. I realize in this day and age of the internet etc. everybody wants something yesterday. Back in the seventies when i was at my record collecting zenith at times I would wait years to find that elusive gem. And when I finally found it I was totally freaked. In Utopia. One example is Guru Guru`s Dance Of The Flames. Took me 3 years to dig that one up.
There are some good suggestions above but patience is needed.
