Don't like to be the damps squib here, but if the newsletter will simply contain what is already on the site, then I don't really see the point.
If it contains other information such as prog news etc., then it could be attractive, but it takes a lot of effort to do that. The DPRP site recently lost their news co-ordinator, and had a difficult job getting a replacement. They themselves admitted it needed someone with a lot of time.
Happy to give a newsletter a go, but the site should remain the priority (IMHO!).

Hmmm... It certainly has potential for greatness. Wouldn't want it more
often than weekly, though, and content would have to be "news and
update" based. I think the home page already does a good job you
letting people know what forum hot topics there are and any new
reviews, so I think it would be a waste of time including that.
Maybe a new additions to the archives section, and news on new releases
and announced tours would be quite interesting. It would probably save
a lot of work to get site users (some of whom are probably obsessional
about particular bands) to e-mail in with any release dates etc they
come across. Tour date news should be limited to "x is on tour from
April, see -link to website- for more details"
I think a new bands section, as mentioned in the original post, would
be an excellent idea, as it would get bands attention a lot earlier. A
few notes on what the band is like would be useful there too, and could
all be volunteered by members.
Excellent idea!

I find the idea of a prog newsletter to be at least worth a try, even
though I doubt I'd subscribe myself. I just cannot bring myself to
actually read an online newsletter... Besides, I fear that I couldn't
stand searching for information about music I love from the piles of
prog metal sh**e that the newsletter would have to contain.
Being realistic, it's obvious that prog metal stuff must be included in
order to gain enough subscriptions - without subscribers, such a huge
project wouldn't make much sense, would it?
Were there decent international publications available on paper, I'd be
more than happy to pay ridiculous amounts of money even if they'd
contain the same prog metal sh*te as a online newsletter would. (But at
least such a publication would have pictures of dragons, swords and
girls in trouble / to be saved - aren't those the main themes of prog
metal?).
But serously, I wish the newsletter project success and luck.
But I assure you that many a RIOphile or canterbuphile (nice words,
eh?) will reconsider their subscription rather quickly if their first
glance at the newsletter only gives them DT/Opeth/Symphony X tour dates
or Ayreon release info.
I'm not actually afraid that such a disaster would happen really, but
because the prog metal "scene" is rather big (and noisy) in comparison
to "traditional" prog, the newsletter might easily turn to that
direction.
After reconsidering, I think I'd subscribe and reconsider if I don't
find the newsletter of interest or somehow witty and funny...
So you can count me in, or out, or inside out.
Cheers
-Beau

Of course i (and lots of progressive rock/metal fans around the world)
would not regret a newsletter about this matter. I wonder why you
hadn't thought about it before. Of course, an efficient newsletter
implies not harrassing our e-mail inbox bins with spam, silly
advertisement or stupid threads about nothing. So if this is the path
to follow for this new progressive idea you can count with my blind

I have just had an AMAZING idea (well i think it is amazing! )
You make several prog newsletters on the different genre's of prog (E.g. metal, folk, neo etc.) and then publish samples onto the website then let people choose which newsletter they would like to subscribe to. this would mean more information about a perticular genre and more people may subscribe to one of them as they won't have to deal with the genre they are not interested in.

Arkitek's idea is excellent at least to potential subscribers.
I do wonder - and this is the reason why I didn't even think of such a
possibility when I posted my previous message - if divinding the
newsletter project into a number of "publications" would make the task
even more troublesome and worksome than what it would be without the
divition...
The task is, anyway, enourmous.
But I suppose I would subscribe to a non-metal prog newsletter

hmm... I'm skeptical, and I have to agree with many of the dissenters.
In my opinion, e-newsletters are worthless- if you want to read
something, you just jump online and go read it! Having a e-newletter
would be useless and redundant... e-mail clutter. Now, if it was a real newsletter that showed up in my mailbox, and was presentable and had unique and interesting articles, then I
would read it. Something akin to a mini-"progression magazine", you
know, but with some feature articles by forum members... now that would
be interesting. Of course, such a publication would require
advertisements for funding, but its like my step-father had always
taught me before he passed away- if you're going to do a job, do it
right. Why cheap out on e-mail clutter? Obviously, I'm not an
administrator, and I don't know the inner-workings of the site, how
much time and money the site admins have, etc., but if there's only
time and resources enough to do an e-mail letter and not a real
publication, then I say, don't bother. If the resources are there, I
think the site, with the help of its members, should put out a real
publication. Of course, thats my opinion... I, for one, would be more
than willing to volunteer my time to put out a monthly or quarterly
publication.
Another question for consideration: what should it be called?
A few ideas of my own:
"Out of the Archives"
"Tales from ProgArchives"
"Wonderous Stories"
"The ProgLetter"
"The Relayer"
"Going for the Archives"
"The Dark Side of ProgArchives" (muahaha! )
"Making Progress"
"Thick as an Archive"
"Moving Archives"
"Script for a ProgArchive"
*gag* talk about some bad ideas. Somebody call quality control!

I would have voted yes, but for some reason I was not allowed to vote in this poll. I guess my opinion doesn't count.

Well done TP, I am pleased you are going to be editing it....although I haven't had chance to read back through this thread yet and see what it actually is...so this congratulatory post may not be quite as resounding an endorsement as it first appeared. Any way sure you'll do a good job.
