While all 4 Volta albums are fantastic, Tool's debut is pretty weak. So I'll cast the first vote for TMV.

Tool are a very good band, no disrespect to them, but they don't appeal to me all that much anymore (they shouldn't be in my top 20). Plus TMV's better anyway.

TMV I like (a lot) more. I also feel like they progressed further while Tool hasn't.

As much as I think that Undertow wasn't that great I think it's a clean washout for Tool in my mind.

I would be a complete liar if I didn't say Tool was far more progressive. I mean Mars Volta uses complicated time signatures, jazz chords, and ambient experimentation. They don't go much farther than that.
Tool, on the other hand, just constantly is making me rethink how I listen to music.

I love both groups, however I find all four of the TMV albums to be absolutely amazing, while I am not a big fan of Tool's Undertow. I think it has some great songs on it, but overall is not a very good album. They hadn't quite branched out of the California Metal/Alt Rock style.

It's a toughy. I think Lateralus and Frances The Mute are two of the best albums ever created by modern prog. But I hate Undertow, and because of TMV's astonishing output on their debut, it's gonna have to be them.

Unlike everyone else I love Undertow but 10000 days doesn't do it for me.
I love TMV first 2 but lost interest after Amputecture with its rambling sonic awkwardness.
Tool gets the vote. I personaly hope that both bands start to change direction with their next releases.
I want Tool to loosen up and experiment more and TMV to do the oposite!

How is The Mars Volta more progressive... how, name one reason. You can't. That said Tool isn't progressive either, they just happen to not make my brain hurt.

This is really the battle of the most over-rated bands in PA... (Yes, I used the damn word)....
Curiously, I have 7 of these 8 albums. I've tried with both of these bands, there's no denying that... (I don't have Undertow).
So:
TOOL
TMV
Amputechture 1/2
Bedlam
Tool wins with me... Their peak was better, and overall, there's always good stuff in their albums... TMV's last two, on the other hand, are just a monument of boredom...

Love both 2 of my favorite modern bands, but i will have to give my vote to Mars Volta, cant realy explain why but they have a litle edge over tool. i gues its caus tools music can get a bit too depresing at times.

Tool are perfectly OK, though nothing special. The Mars Volta are just awful - if it was a choice of sticking a lit stick of dynamite down the front of my pants or listening to any of their albums again I would have to think hard.

Why not make it an album v album thing instead of comparing their whole cathalog?
Undertow vs De loused - De loused wins!
Aenima vs Frances the mute - Frances the mute wins!
Lateralus vs Amputechture - LATERALUS BY FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
10,000 days vs Bedlam in Goliath - 10,000 days wins!
So... for me it´s not possible to vote

I voted Tool, mainly on the strength of the last album by each. Bedlam kind of gets on my nerves at times, and 10,000 Days doesn't.

What I heard from Tool didn't rock my world, while I fell in love with TMV the first time I heard them. So, my vote is really a no-brainer - though this doesn't mean that I think Tool are bad.

Hmm, I voted and posted a response but it's gone now. Second time that occurred yesterday. I think I voted for Tool, but it's somewhat possible I voted for TMV. Only the ether knows at this point.

Well, three of Tool's four records are masterpieces, and one-and-a-half of TMV's albums are even halfway decent.
Gotta be Tool.

meh, hard to chose. the only album by either of these bands i still listen to with any sort of regularity is deloused which is a 5 star album so that give TMV points. on the other hand, if you go album to album i think tool wins. tools best vs. mars volta's best matches up like this. deloused vs. laturalus. oh man too close to call.
frances vs. aenima. again, wow. at times id chose one, other time id chose the other. but i think im giving the edge to frances. but just for the opener and the closer. (45 minutes of music or close) but then i love a lot off of aenima. man. tool wins the next two no contest. tool wins album to album but its too close to call.

While Amputechture and The Bedlam In Goliath definately didn't blow me away, nothing from Tool (barring the songs Rosetta Stoned and Schism) has ever left a big impression on me. The first two TMV albums however, are masterpieces. TMV, without a doubt.

I tend to agree with you. I think Tool has gotten better with each disc, while (IMO) TMV have gone down hill. But I think, because of that, I can vote. Tool.

I actually haven't listened to a full album by either, but from what I've heard, The Mars Volta is far superior to Tool.

I've heard two albums so far from each, and while I consider The Mars Volta to be probably the most creative band nowadays, I prefer Tool.

WOW! before anyone gets upset let me say this is only MY opinion and yours can be different but not wrong when it comes to music. I can't even believe it's this close because to me TMV is completely meaningless lyrics with a vocalist that sounds like a cat being strangled back in the alley. Not to mention the music sounds like they get onstage and one guy yells... "HEY ERRRBODY!! JUST PLAY WHAT YOU WANT!" I know progressive is pushing the envelope and new experimental style but for godsakes people, that guitarist reminds me of when I was 15 and had only been playing guitar for 2 weeks sitting in my bedroom trying to play a fast solo. There is such a thing as key that should be regarded. Their music sounds like an "anything goes" style. And the lyrics..?? It seems like he sits down infront of a pile of books and picks random words from each and calls it a song. I love vague lyrics but shouldn't they at least be able to be related to something if not many different things? Tool has textures and many different levels of intertwined rythms but they actually match. Tool uses a science behind their music that makes it work, not just thro some crap together and call it progressive. Tools lyrics can be very vague but they can be applied to many different meanings and interpretations. "cartwheel of scratches, dress the tapeworm as pets, tentacles smirk please" <--- mars voltas lyrics. How is anyone hearing substance in this? EASY PICK.... TOOL

Easy pick....Tool.
I still like The Mars Volta though, it's just that after Frances the Mute I kind of lost interest in their sound. Tool on the other hand, changes their sound just enough each album to keep me excited for the next release.

I've never been much of a Tool fan... I have their albums, but none of them have really caught my attention yet after several listens. They do have very good musicians.
The Mars Volta, on the other hand, caught my attention immediately after just a few songs off of De-loused... Purely beautiful music.

Not easy, but as a whole I must vote for Tool. However, De-loused is the best of the 8 albums.

I have to go for Mars volta tho I love Tools last 2 albums, Mars are more consistent and progressive off the scale. Both great of course. Tool get in to darker stuff and that turns me away but I admire theri incredible skill with innovative structures and musicianship
