Has anyone out here in PA land heard of the band Cornershop?  I have only heard their album When I Was Born for the 7th Time which was released in 1997.  It had a couple of songs that made the radio so I suppose that negates any progressiveness but while listening to this album for the first time in quite awhile I was quite impressed and thought that I would mention them to all of my buddies here on PA.

Here is a link to their homepage which includes a few  songs that can be downloaded, a couple of videos that can be watched, and a link to their MySpace page.

They are an Indie band from Great Britain, and their music is a fusion of Indian music, British indie rock, and electronic dance.  I expect that they might appeal to some of you, but probably not to many of you.  Anyhow, on ...Born for the 7th Time, they end with a really cool cover of the Beatles Norwegian Wood.  They also have a couple of fairly "progressive"? instrumental tracks such as It's Indian Tobacco My Friend and State Troopers Part 1.

Here's the YouTube video for their best known song Brimful of Asha which is kind of mildly representative of the rest of the album's sound.

And here is the video for We're in Yr. Corner which is maybe a little bit more representative.

Anyhow, let me know what you think about this band.  I really don't think I have anything else within my collection that sounds anything like this.  Does anybody have any recommendations for any of their other albums?

Only remember their UK #1 hit 'Brimful Of Asha' ... not their usual style since it was a Fatboy Slim remix.

Me too, and I saw them once live in England, at the Greenbelt Festival. They were sitting cross legged during the whole concert. I remember that they were part of some Asian (musical) underground movement.

I did like the hitsingle and the video that went with it. Didn't know it was a Fatboy Slim remix.

We have a Pakistani cornershop in our street, and I visit them a lot of times, and when I think of them as being a cornershop, my subconscious DJ plays in my head Brimful Of Asha. Smile

Notice I did post in general music discussions and not in suggest new bands.  One of things that struck me with this band is on their MySpace page they are listed as psychedelic. Yes, I know what a band says they are on their MySpace doesn't necessarily jibe with what we might think on PA.  The other thought that crossed my mind is that we do have the Indo Rock/Raga Rock section here on PA.  I don't know anything at all about this category, but the idea that Cornershop incorporates Indian music into their sound made me think that they were at least worth mentioning on PA, as someone might connect them with this category.  I have no idea if they would fit there or not.  Most likely not but in case anybody is familiar with the band and these categories and can make that connection here is a thread to do so.
