Ironically, my favourite jazz bassist isn't even a jazz bassist: Michael Henderson. Remember his work with Miles in the 70s? Everyone would be veering off into the most psyched-out splotches of fusion ever, and Michael Henderson would just keep on chugging the 'ole bassline. That guy could take a groove and hold onto it like his life depended on it. Listening to "The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions" box, you gotta admire the guy. There's chaos all around, and he keeps everything anchored. Great stuff. |

haha Michael Henderson is one of my favorite parts of some of Miles' fusion albums. i wasnt sure if i should list him since he isnt "really" a jazz bassist. more of a funk/groove bassist like Bootsy Collins that had the sense of jazz, but didnt play jazz

Yep, but as the old saying goes he had the ability to keep his head while all those around him were losing theirs.
He's a big part of why those albums work.

The jazz bass performance that sold me on jazz in general when I was but a wee lad.....Richard Davis' bass playing on Van Morrison's Astral Weeks....still kills me.
Scott LaFarow....telepathic interplay with Bill Evans and Paul Motian.
Stanley Clark....but really only on the early RTF, I never liked his commerical funky stuff, to Kool and the Gang for me. Jimmy Garrison....with McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones in those early 60s Coltrane quartets. Billy HIggins, Ray Brown, Bob Crenshaw....too many to list. ------------- I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there..... |

Danny Thompson (although most known as a folk bassist, he was the jazz elements in Pentangle)
Although I am a serious (Col)Trane fan, I always thought of Garrison as the weak link in his quartet.
I took out Pastorius (can't stand his ultra demonstrative show-offy playing) and S Clarke ( overdoing it as well)

Check him out on John Martyn's Live At Leeds joining with free jazz drummer John Stevens as the rhythm section. Martyn's folk blues really has a jazz tinge with these guys on board. Also Danny Thompson has at least one solo album, Whatever, on Hannibal Records, which is well crafted hybrid of jazz and Anglo-celt folk. ------------- The best eclectic music on the Web,8-11pm BST/GMT THURS.
