... So, lucky me, I get to listen whatever the hell I feel like at work. That democracy ended up with someone else at the office discovering his love for that hideous Tenacious D band. I crave for elevator music now... I already can't stand Jack Black as comedian, ¿but singer?... horrible beyond believe. Michael Bolton sounds great compared to this band, wich is nothing but a torment. I can't complain though, wich makes the whole situation more and more ironic each day (co worker -a great guy- loves Jack Black and knowing that he also has a band was like when I knew Magma had a new release for me, pure joy). So, ¿does anyone know Ketih Emerson's address, email, whatever, so I can writte to him saying that Jack Black said he sucks, so Emerson can go to their place to kick them to death?...

Like all comedy music - it's funny once, but seldom benefits from multiple plays. I sympathise with you - I had (note the past-tense!) a friend who use to torment me with The Bloodhound Gang's travesty of Another Brick In the Wall. ------------- What? |

Some of my friends like Tenacious D, it was ok for a while, but the humor faded rather quickly for me. Not terrible music, but nothing to sustain any interest really. I'd give them 5/10, which I think is a fair rating. -------------

Man, some people need to lighten up. It's just funny! Admittedly the 2nd TD album wasn't that funny, but the first one has the unbeatable combination of Tribute, Wonder Boy and f**k Her Gently. Uhm... I like humor, wich means I like things to be clever and unespected. Those Tenacious D albums (wich by no means I try to understad, having lyrics in a foreing language for me) are just obvious. I can writte 100 of those and then find some guitar player to make another obvious contribution by choosing obvious chord progressions. I can't say the same thing for Frank Zappa albums. I love the D, JB and KG are hilarious, both albums are great! I'm probably the only person on the archives who actually thought the pick of destiny was a good movie. -------------

Yes, steve howe is definitely an abomination of nature. Actually, Rick might be the hottest member of yes, which is kinda worrying. Strange, if i were to choose one to start a family with in the early 70's, Bill is the one i would have picked last (apart from Steve howe, but hey, i don't even want to think about that), and nowadays he's quite the babe for his age. Relative to the other proggers, of course. -------------

I dunno if I'd say I love Tenacious D, because they're rather kitschy, but they're good musicians and their HBO episodes that predate the first album are hilarious.

As for the chords, as said, I'll get just any random guitar player guy and there it is; 4 - 5 natural chords and you are ready to go. As for lyrics, anything between "Let me have your hamster just oncet" and "Your sister must be fornicated or she'll explode and that will kill all those chickens that your father loves to fornicate as well" (not yours literally, this is just the imaginary premise of the imaginary song, not an incredible insult; this explanation is necessary given the tiny possibilty of misunderstanding that comes with being not a native english speaker) will do. For what I get from the few lyrics I've heard, a bit of verbal focus (not much) is all you need. Same for music. ¿Anyone that can play is a good musician?. To make a good parody you have to be as good as the musicians you are making fun of otherwise the joke fails. Over the years their have been several good humorous bands (Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranoias, Zimmer's Hole, Weird Al Yankovic, Spinal Tap, The Ruttles) whose musical ability was enough to carry the humour even after the joke had worn thin. The key point about Tenacious D is their parody is of genres rather than individual artists, so their musical ability is tested since they have to create original music in the genre they parody, rather than just butchering someone else's material - which to me shows a degree of skill and creativity beyond just writing witty lyrics. ------------- What? |

Natural chord is a term I've heard from musician friends to refer to the basic ones, mayor or minors (do - mi - sol, for example), as opposite to complex ones. As for humor, you like Tenacious D, wich is ok for you and nothing to be dicussed at all, but impossible for me to regard as parameter in terms or funny or not. I'm not going to start a band or whatever, but I do know how to make a simple series of chords (as the ones you can find in those tenacious d things) in a keyboard, wich means that it is easy as hell. A song like Bily the mountain or Greggery Peccary, on the other hand, would be out of reach by far. Jokes, I'm currently developing scripts for a series of comics (locally, I'm affraid), and, though we are just starting, the jokes this far have being very appreciated by the drawing personel. It'll take a year to know if a wider auddience likes them or not. I'll keep in mind to send samples if you are that interested once the rough drafts are finished, at least for the first number. ------------- ¡Beware of the Bee! |

Decent is one thing; popular, other story. If by decent you mean "fair", there is a whole music industry based on that adjective. Christina Aguilera would be a decent musician, good singer and all. Same for Shania Twain, that guy from n' sync Justin something, Oasis and the else. They all know how to play their incredibly predictable songs with a fair amount of skills. ¿Is that what youe mean? ¿mediocre composition is ok if they play it nicely?. 100 Jack BLacks are not worthy even the 0.1% of Peter Sellers, who's silent performances are like humor zen. ------------- ¡Beware of the Bee! |

My problem with your attitude is that you obviously think that knowing some basic chords and being able to play them on a keyboard is all that it takes to record an album like Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny. It's much, much more complex than that - even if you don't have to care about engineering, mixing etc.. BTW: There's nothing mediocre about that album. You just don't like pop or simple rock/metal music, that's all IMO. Well, I do like pop and among "simple rock / metal" I can certainly found things to be thrilled about. I'm sorry to cause you problems with my attitude... it is just a thread. The guy here at works who likes tenacious d that much knows very well how much I respect personal and furthermore acoustic space. The thumb down is an emoticon that shows my feelings regarding that album (wich by now is getting more annoying as topic than the original item). A simple song is one thing, an obvious song (or some other product of artistic expresion) is a very different one. Using little intuition, I can randomly guess the next chord / chorus / harmony / whatever. That leaves little to one's imagination, and it is almost a paradigm that a piece or art without any "mistery" (a really short way to put it, I don't want to writte a book here), both in terms of formal elements will not reach it's possibilities of keep gaining new meanings in time, and just die after the first impression. Believe it or not, humor is as complicated as construction as any other sign (songs, drawings etc.). An effective construction create timless pieces. I originaly wrotte a lot about this, semi quoting texts and etc., but I really think it's not worthy. I just started a thread about the irony of freedom related to tenacious d, a band I think it's annoying "just because", and I end uo listening to it at least 2 days of each week. That's the price of my own freedom to listen to Boards of canada or whatever and that's it. Then your post, a bit irritated, but that's your thing. And as for the songs... maybe you think they are complicated. I think Ginastera's "Danzas Argentinas" are complicated. ------------- ¡Beware of the Bee! |

^ complexity comes in different forms and levels. I'm sure there are musical compositions which are more complex than "Danzas Argentinas" ... the point is that I can enjoy simplistic music as well as complex stuff. Tenacious D is not about creating original compositions, it's just a bit of fun. And I'm just trying to say that given these circumstances, the guys are doing a very good job musically.

Les luthiers are OUTSTANDING and veryu intelligent humor, I'm not familiar with Tenacious D so I can't give an opinion, but watching Jack Black's movies, I can't laugh at his Jim Carey style comedy.

Yes, those guys are pure genius. I've always heard about that "funny bones" concept. This must be an example. They can simply breath, but it goes out as a damn funny thing that is simply impossible to ignore. Someone told that they also develope lectures on boring subjects in comedy format.
