I am an old and outdated progger! I have no value but to protect my leftover bones that those circlin' young hawks are looking to devour.
Old proggers die here, their hearts are extracted and carcases are burnt. They find no happy hunting ground and all the other old hippies are in jail!

I try to know everything about Prog' bands I like and also about those I don't like too much, but it's easier to remember more data about your favorites.
That's why I believe it's very hard to beat me in bands like Progressive Genesis or Kansas but not to hard to beat me in King Crimson for example, even when I bought all their DVD's, CD's and read everything availlable.
I won't mark an answer in the poll because each one should not rate his own knowledge.

But can sonebody explain to me why "Come on Arlene" is always played at birthday parties, weddings and every other bash I've ever been to...Am I the only man in existance who loathes that track the most ????

But that's a matter of taste.I'm not attacking you!
Cant you see that you can love all the esoteric bands you want, but you want to inflict your tastes on us as if it is dogma.I am 43 yrs old and have been listening to Prog for over 30 years. If I prefer Rush,Yes and Genesis to Picchio Dal Pozzo and Kraan that does not make me shallow.I listen to a lot of Classical and Rock music too.I know what I like and havent the time or the inclination to go hunting for the most obscure albums on the shelf. I have looked at your list on Rateyourmusic and on these Archives-all they really tell me is that you like making lists!

I can talk about Rush, Pink Floyd, some Genesis, Dream Theater, prog metal, heavy metal, and certain other bands and genres. But I have quite a few empty pages that need filling. I would love to chat with someone who knows about such bands as Marillion, IQ, Eloy, and some of the older Porcupine Tree albums in exchange for knowledge that they themselves have a curiosity for.
Prog is a wider world than we think it is.

quite young and only been listening to prog for about two years so I
have a bit of catching up to do. But then again considering that I'm
only 17 I would say that I have a quite good knowledge of prog rock and

frenchie:
Thanks for the moral support. Actually, I am not certain where I fall in this poll. Probably close to the "king" category from prog's inception (1966/1967) to mid-70's. Possibly in the "impressive" category for neo-prog (Marillion et al) and non-english-speaking prog (from Anglagard to Deus ex Machina). But only in the "average" category for neo-neo-prog (Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, et al) - though I'm quickly catching up with that stuff.
Still, there are areas in which I am woefully inadequate. I'm new to neo- and neo-neo-prog groups like IQ, Pendragon, Arena et al, though I'm learning. I'm very new to prog metal (Opeth, Pain of Salvation et al), and have much to learn. I also have little knowledge of Canterbury, krautrock, and groups like Can, Tangerine Dream, Soft Machine et al - though, again, I'm learning.
So I guess I am something of a know-it-all when it comes to the history of what might be called "seminal" prog - the original creators, and the first group of spin-offs (e.g., Nektar) - but only a little better, in average, with regard to other areas.
And do I need to say that this site has helped me grow in my own knowledge, to a degree I would not have thought possible? And that this is a result of both the groups and albums I am led to, and the knowledge imparted by all of you in forum threads?
Thanks for being such an informed, smart, articulate bunch of maniacs...
Peace.

moment I know basic things about all prog subgenres and I've listened
to a lot of bands - well-known and obscure from different
countries... But I 'm just well versed in genres and the music. I
still don't know much about bio's, dates, member names... and other
data. I've read a good book about English prog - "Rocking the

knowledge...
My main interest is prog but I also listen to other music and I learned also classical music history...

I have flunked quite spectacularly every single IQ test I have ever done which only goes to show how utterly useless such things are for measuring intelligence. I'm awful at maths and the majority of the questions in an IQ test will have some sort of mathematical basis,at least they did in my day,and what chance does a mathematical dunce like me have then? An IQ test may measure the nuts and bolts of your intelligence in a very rudimentary sense but it will tell bugger all about your actual intellect which can not be ascertained by whether you know which number will logically follow a row of other numbers or which geometrical structure is identical to another. The intellectual canvas is much, much broader than that. It's depressingly obvious that IQ tests were invented by the typical narrow minded male psychiatrist that one of my biggest heroes,Freud, despised so much.
And stop showing off,Reed!

IQ tests always make me think of Mensa. Mensa is proof positive that it's possible to have a very high IQ and still be an idiot. And scoring high in conventional IQ tests is certainly no guarantee of being an interesting person. My mother's cohabitational person (now husband) is amazing at IQ tests,he is without a doubt the most "intelligent" person I have ever met but he is also the most boring man ever to walk the earth. To spend any amount of time in his company induces suicidal thoughts in the most life affirming of people,so what use is his high IQ?

As I've mentioned before on the topic of IQ tests, read 'The Mismeasure of Man' by Stephen Jay Gould - you'll discover that there's a more sinister agenda at work, and if you think it's rolled over and died look at that awful apology for eugenics that was The Bell Curve, published about 10 years ago to the joy of bigots everywhere.

Mensa take 2% of the most intelligent people in the world!
here are some iq tests with the minimum requirements:
California Test of Mental Maturity - IQ 132 Cattell - IQ 148 Stanford Binet, Form L-M - IQ 132 Wechler Adult and Children Scales (WAIS and WAIS-R, WISC and WISC-R) - IQ 130 Otis-Lennon Tests - IQ 132 Otis-Gamma Test - IQ 131 SAT or CEEB (Verbal and Math combined): prior to 9/77 - 1300; effective 9/77 - 1250 GRE Verbal and Math combined) - 1250 LSAT: prior to 1982 - 662; effective 1982 - 39 ACT Composite - 29 Miller Analogies Test (raw score) - 66 MCAT or GMAT (overall) - 95% Army GCT prior to 10/80 - 136 Navy GCT prior to 10/80 - 68
we can say that you have to get at least 132, as an average lower limit.
Actually, i would barely be able to be a member of it, so i would be among the least intelligent people inside this very gifted group!
intelligence can be measured with many instruments:
for instance, the Windows' Minesweeper game is a good way to see the logic and reflexes of people: i'm not too bad since my record at the expert is 138 seconds.
here is another game which measures you capability to develop a structured, methodic approach in problem solving: try the Windows' Spider cards game: at the expert level, my success percentage is around 35%, which is considered to be excellent!
finally, as a practical electrical engineer, i think my capability of abstraction is excellent too, since i design and troubleshoot electronic circuits.
my strongest point is the capability to learn fast, VERY fast! i've developed the power to improvise in stressing situations, and i've noticed that the success principle is to keep your stress at its lowest level!
there is another form of intelligence: the kinesthetic one: your ability to learn fast and well an instrument, a sport, a technique...i think i'm not too bad, especially the precision sports and games like golf, billard, ping pong, mississipi, bowling and ski.
people who typewrite fast and play well an instrument like violin have this form of intelligence.
there is the adaptation after a new situation, which is another form of intelligence, probably the most important one, which can be directly measured when, for instance, you start a new job...
there are finally alternative intelligences, in which i'm completely hopeless:i'm a total retarded regarding social and emotional intelligence. when i "try" to socialize with other persons, i think they find me bizarre and they don't understand me! plus, my relationship with women is inexistant: they find me insignificant! they don't like the music i listen! they don't like the way i talk! they don't understand me, so they are afraid of me!
Nevertheless, i'm a huge NEO prog fan because it makes me dream about women. it seems i prefer to keep dreaming than live the brutal reality, which should break my paradisiacal theoretical romantism.
recall that there are people who are so stupid that they can'T even drive an automatic car!!

great description greenback. I think every person (even us few mensa qualifiers) who is above average intelligence have some sort of problem with thier intelligence. I have two, 1 i have absolutely no motivation whatsoever (like none, its almost uncanny). 2 I have ADD and have trouble paying attention for extended periods of time (longer than 5 mins) without daydreaming. I think measuring intelligence with tests is dumb personally, theres so much ground which just cannot be tested at all. So many things which cannot be taken into account.

hmm, I'm not sure if IQ tests really represent a person's intelligence, but I've never met a really intelligent person that's not interesting. Maybe they don't talk as much as others do (because they think more before they start), but the quality is most often way better. Also intelligent people tend to be more able to create their own individuality and NOT just copy from others (like 80% of teenagers do).
But maybe we're talking about different kinds of intelligence ...
