following the example of StyLaZyn, I hereby open the Gong fan central; a band that is not everybody's cup of tea (sic!), but who arguably had some of the very best musicians in prog in their line-up. anyone can utter his / her two cent's worth about this amazing band here

I have a flying teapot in my room.
With the original background and all, i even had a hole drilled into the lid so i could fit in the propeller, which i made from styrofoam and masking tape. I also gave one away to the only friend i have who also likes gong, but with a different background. I'd post an image of it, but i don't really have a camera right now.
...anyhow.. well, obviously i like the Flying teapot album, but i haven't gotten hold of the other two of the trilogy, but i am very interested in hearing them, as they sound very good, especially You.
I have heard Camembert electronique, though, and i find it rather uneven. Fun to listen to, but not consistently masterliness. Ihave also listened a bit to Shamal, and i always think "hey, this is really good" while listening to it, but it doesn't seem to stick, as i rarely think about it when i'm not.

Manana!
I don't enjoy SHAMAL either, apart from Bloomdido's 'Bambooji', and I completely agree that only about 50% of CAMEMBERT is good. I simply love the Radio Gnome Trilogy, Gazeuse and Expresso II! By the way, one of the greatest mysteries about Progarchives is that Daevid Allen's solo albums are noy [yet?] included here.

of the trilogy "You" musically is the best. "Master Builder", "A Sprinkling of Clouds" and "Isle of Everywhere" are timeless classics

I saw Gong play in Edinburgh in a tiny venue about 15 years ago. Daevid Allen was approachable, funny and a genuinely nice guy. He even dedicated a verse of a song to me! It's obvious how much he loves making music.

Did anyone ever see Gong live in their Flying Teapot days? Judging from some of their live albums (esp. LIVE ETC.) and from the clothes they wore, their act may have been quite theatrical. Did they do anything special on stage?

I'm a huge fan of their Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy. "You" has to be a landmark in Space Rock history. One of my favorite albums of all times. I haven't heard other albums from them except for their trilogy and Acid Mothers Gong. My next stop: Camembert Electrique.

The 'Radio Gnome' trilogy is my favourite period, the music found on those three albums is pure genius. Tim Blake's keyboards and Steve Hillage's guitar gel so perfectly.

'Stupid lyrics'? That's a bit harsh! Have you ever heard any solo albums by Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt or even Daevid Allen?

I've got a pretty large selection of Gong and family albums. I was a bit of a late convert to them - in the 70s I didn't really get them, but in the 90s for some reason those old albums made a lot more sense.
I like both the Daevid Allen and Pierre Moerlen incarnations for different reasons, although for me the Allen incarnation is the definitive Gong. I like the trilogy, but Camembert Electrique is my favourite Gong album.
I've seen Daevid Allen with the Brainville trio (Allen plus Hugh Hopper and Chris Cutler) twice in the last 12 months and they were excellent on both occasions. When I saw them at the London Borderline club they played for over 2 hours, including some improv from Hopper and Cutler and a hilarious poem about their experiences in Israel from Allen. Daevid Allen is a warm and wonderful performer, and in a small venue he's at his best; he really engages with the audience.
Nice thread Jean!

I have Angel's Egg and You. They aren't exactly something that I can listen to every day. The silliness kinda gets to me. I'll probably get Flying Teapot eventually just to complete the trilogy, but I can't see myself going beyond that. I like You out of the ones I have heard. It's much more ...musical.... for lack of a better word.

I love alll incarnations of Gong, although Pierre Moerlen's Gong can become a bit too "bingely" at times. One has to be in the right mood for it. Some of the very best musicians of prog played in Gong; most notably Pierre Moerlen himself (see my signature pic; he is playing with Brand X there), but also Didier Malherbe and Allan Holdsworth, and Steve Hillage and Mike Howlett of the classic line-up were no slouches either. The "Shapeshifter" album was indeed a nice comeback..

The Radio Gnome trilogy as well as Camembert Electrique are all brilliant, my favorite is probably You, with CE and Angel's Egg close behind. I like Pierre Moerlen Gong-era, although I prefer the transition album Shamal to Gazeuse and Expresso, which is a bit unusual for most Gong fans.

It certainly was a blast - and certainly from the past! 30 years of floating anarchy... Almost a contradiction in terms, isn't it... But

Actually the first album i got and heard from Gong was "Gazeuse", where the line up was Moerlen, Malherbe and Holdsworth if im not wrong, a great and instrumental album which is very different to the Radio Gnome Trilogy for instance, i strongly recommend it if you wish to explore another incarnation of the band.

I used to be massively into gong, but somehow Angel's Egg and You kinda put me off them. i loved the first 3 records, but with those too it just got abit too stupid and the music got abit too proggy as opposed to the anarchic jazz-punk of the early records. i find find shamal an incredibly dull record and i imagen the later ones weren't much better. Having said that, what i've heard of Acid Motherhood sounds very good indeed.

Gong...an enigma really. The 'silly' lyrics are in fact very far from silly. They address a serious & complicated set of ideas, but Daevid's alluminium croon & lyrics pre-empty the would-be pretentiousness. But at the same time, they are very silly! A five piece trilogy? Spot on. After Daevid & Steve departed, the music, for me, became boring & formulaic. The likes of Alan Holdsworth, brilliant as he is, have no place in Gong. The albums released as Pierre Morlens Gong were a contractual thing I think. Too much cleverness, not enough soul. In Gong you will find humour face to face with mystery & secret, & this is how serious subjects should be addressed...else they become a burden.

I purchased and obtained "You" less than a week ago, and it's been getting pretty much nonstop plays since that time. Thanks so much to Friede and Jean for introducing me to this. My favorite track is a toss-up between "Master Builder" and "A Sprinkling of Clouds", but right now I think my vote is for the latter. Not too much to add, just weighing in on the Gong thread...
LOVE Gong!
In fact my last band performed Tried So Hard as a regular feature in our set, and we weren't really a prog band (although we did do some Tull, Roxy, and Zappa). To add to the mayhem, we interpolated Sabbath's War Pigs into the middle...worked brilliantly actually! The crowd loved this song, and frequently requested it without knowing its origin...we always introduced it by saying that anyone who could correctly identify the original artist would have their bar tab picked up by the band...in over 5 years, no winners, hehe.

It depends on time and popularity;
The entire trilogy (the most popular Gong albums) were originally released on Virgin - Flying Teapot and Angel's Egg first appeared on the black and white "two virgins" label, but were both later released on the coloured "two virgins", then the green "single virgin", then the standard green/red Virgin label, before their final release on Charly.
The first Gong LPs (Magick Brother and Camembert) were released on BYG in France and Metronone in Germany (IIRC) . Camembert was re-released on the black and white "two virgins" label, but never again.
Floating Anarchy, and a number of side projects (Gilli Smyth, Here & Now), etc were also released on Charly, Pierre Moerlin's Gong released many albums on Arista...
The reason for the proliferation of labels probably goes right back to the original demos that the first incarnation recorded for Barclay - they didn't like the terms of the deals they were offered, being true hippies.
Incidentally, has anyone listened to "Magic Theater" by Drum Circus? I reviewed it recently, and there are some striking similarities between this album (released in 1971) and later Gong albums; http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15462 - http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=15462

I love Gong's trilogy. Camembert may be unequal in quality but it has some tracks sound as if they had just come out nowadays.

The "stupid lyrics" are what is so great about Gong - my kids love 'em!
PS - What do you think is the best Gong track of all?

The "stupid lyrics" is kinda refreshing from all the usual seriusness goin on in the prog world. And usualy they are pretty fun. Maybe not Laugh Out Loud fun but they do put a smile on my face.

I've been knowing Gong for years:Gazeuse is one of my favourites alongside with You,Angel egg........
I also dig other projects such as Fish Rising or Rainbow Dome Music by Steve Hillage.I've always
enjoyed their funny side and chops, also the hippie feel which is not outdated.I was in Amsterdam in
2006 for their Unconvention:it was great fun with Acid Mothers Gong,Gong and Steve Hillage.

I wasn't that impressed with the first of the Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy. It had its quirks but it isn't something I could ever listen to on a regular basis. I just listened to the third part last night though, and holy crap! I was not expecting that. Unfortunately the weird quirkiness which brings down the first two songs aren't present at all in Master Builder or a Sprinking of Clouds which turned out to be amazing. I'll give the album a couple more listens and see if the non-epic (?) songs grown on me or not.

Steve Hillage's 'Live Herald' is one of the best live albums I have ever heard. The guitar playing is from outer space!
To all fans of the Radio Gnome invisible trilogy, I recommend the 90's Gong album, 'Shapeshifter'. It is incredible and surprisingly accessible.
I also like the 'Acid Mothers' album but I think this album might alienate some people who are not as open to something a bit wild and different.

I have enjoyed Gong since hearing Angels Egg in 76 but I find I really appreciate them when I am in that "Oily Way" myself.
