The UK sent all their worst criminals to Australia, but sent religious people to America.

Australia has very little gun crime, but America is awash with  gun crime, is there a link with murder and religion? Or did the real convicts go west?

Would "No, that's a stupid idea" offend you? Because that's basically my answer.

Australia has banned all guns, and while I am unaware of their crime statistics (and I am nearly positive what you said is a gross oversimplification), I imagine it is more difficult to acquire a gun illegally there since it is a fairly remote location. But less gun crimes does not necessarily mean less crimes overall or even less murders.

banning all guns is a terrible idea for america.  People at this point are way too attached to their guns to ever give in to any legislation that would threaten them.  Plus, I still believe in the original purpose of the 2nd amendment, which is to keep power in the hands of the citizens, not in the hands of an over-armed government.

I think it's our culture of violence that needs to change before any effective change can take place in sale of guns themselves.

Honestly, I REALLY REALLY can't see it.

Besides they sent more than religious "radicals" over. They DID send criminals here... (Georgia). They also sent excess people.

That's an interesting idea, but it lies on the assumption that descendents of criminals and religious people will turn to a life of crime or religion respectively.

The idea is.....the criminals settled, but the religous people didn't. Although both abused the indigenous tribes there. As did the British, everywhere they went.

Lighten up people it is a lighthearted look at descendants. The picts got shagged out of Caledonia and replaced by some Irish numbnuts (Scots).

Why is it when you're entitled to an opinion some fud calls you a troll?.....never understood that.

Don't think all your opinions are troll's opinions, even though some of your posts seem a bit arrogant for the aftertaste. I don't see trolling in this one, though; it's a reality which can contain some sociological thoughts

I don't own a gun, and I never intend to, but the day the US tries to ban them will be the day I get one.

The revisionist-history assumptions about where Americans came from (and why) aside, this is an interesting and important question. First let me say though that I am both a Libertarian and someone who comes from Montana, one of the strongest pro-gun states in the U.S., but I believe we need to do something to better control access to guns. The individual who shot 58 people at Virginia Tech and killed 33 of them would probably have committed his crimes regardless, but it is unlikely he would have left so many victims if he had not been able to purchase handguns here.

That said, if you expand your question to include all crimes, then your argument doesn’t really hold up. According to the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute, Australia (and New Zealand) both reported higher rates of assault victims, rape victims, robbery victims, and total crime victims in the last reporting period (1998-2002) then did the U.S.

In fact, Australia and New Zealand were numbers 1 and 2 in the percentage of citizens who have been a victim of a crime. The U.S. was #15. The UK, Sweden, Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, France, and Italy all had higher rates of crime victims than the United States.

But it is true that the gun murder rate in the United States is unacceptably high. It is the eighth highest in the world per capita, and almost ten times higher than Australia’s. So it seems that Australians commit more crimes than Americans, they simply let their victims live.

the idea that "criminals" were sent to Australia is a myth - most of these "criminals"  as you call them were English people under persecution and starvation from the ruling classes - people were forced to "steal" a loaf of bread or an apple rather than face death from starvation and be deported - a crime? Australia was a convenient dumping ground for the homeless, talk of revolution was rife,  and although England was the richest most powerful country in the world people were starving and living on the streets.
People from Scotland and Ireland were forced to move to Australia and America after they were forced from their lands by the Highland "clearances" and potato famine - to call them criminals is indeed insulting.

Many religious groups faced  persecution and were forced to seek a new life in America, most notably  the "Mayflower" emigrants, they originally settled in peace with the indigenous population who helped them survive the early years.

Every country has its gun crime, even England is rife with this at the moment, though not on the same scale - despite our strict gun laws kids are getting and using them on the streets.

Tightening America's gun laws may drive the gun dealers underground, it's a catch-22 situation, but in a free society any nutcase can get a gun and cause devastation, you can't blame religion as a cause for that, people would complain about their freedom rights if our countries  became a Police state.
