I've been in the restaurant business for over twenty years, and I love it. I've held just about every position (including management), but I am best at waiting tables. That is what I currently do.

I love my job! Some days are more stressful than others, but overall I have a pretty easy going job as an art director for an ad agency.
I started off as a production artist in the industry and hated it. I upgraded my book, did some jobs on the side (even designed the CD by the country rock band Poco) and was ready to better my career. Then 9/11 hit and the already competitve industry dried up. Still, I cold called creative directors to set up networking sessions, got my face out there and have gone on to much better and bigger responsibilities. I'm even working with Rush designer Hugh Syme for a cover of our magazine. To be honest, as an average high school student who went on to college, earned a degree and has put it to work for him, I'm not ashamed to say that I'm proud of myself.

Well, carts is awesome. Very relaxing on warm nights, and it's laid back and you don't have to deal with people too much.
Bagging can be good depending on the cashier. Fortunately for me, there are a lot of attractive and nice girls at the supermarket I work at. If you get stuck with a lame cashier, it sucks though.
Cleaning usually isn't fun, so I do a half-assed job so I can get out of it quicker.

We don;t have a single attractive cashier, all cute girls are clerks like me, the only one from my school who's a cashier is far, with short spiked hair and gets confused with a guy all the time. It's a very busy place so it takes the whole hour to clear the lot. Unless it's later at night that is, then it's nice.

Yeah, that's where my job is a little depleted. I always say that just because our two biggest accounts are agriculture related doesn't mean we need to hire girls who look like livestock!
The agency I worked at prior to this one was probably 5-6 times bigger and beautiful women were plentiful. About the only thing I miss about that place.

Yeah, it seems like almost all younger waitresses are attractive. I could never work in a restaurant though. Don't have the charisma to be a waitor, nor do I have the work ethic to be a busboy.

He actually said "occupation" in the title, then asked the question of "what do you do" (for a living, to add).
You have a totally correct value of a pinch-point there, though, as what I do isn't a simple, artificial and manual job, it comes to a passion, an art-handle, an inspiration resort etc.
But, mainly, that's what I do, that's what I'll do and that's probably something for which I'll earn everything around my life.
(and, if things go great, I'll earn more than you...each "paycheck"... )

I don't like my job, which has nothing to do with the things I like and I studied. It just brings me the minimum income for me to pay a small rent and have a decent living by minimal standards. (Though income here is small, like is expensive, unfortunately).
Working in the "fields" of culture is impossible here unless parents support you, and since this is not the case for me (don't ask why), I have left the world of arts and went for a job that didn't need any previous qualification - some sort of customer support application operator . It's sad, but at least it brings me an income double than that I'd have if being curator in a museum. But I won't tell you how much THAT would be, because it shames me.
@Rico - I hope your occupation will successfully turn into a job for you, not necessarily a steady job, but still a great one. Good luck at being a professional musician.

For the longest time I wanted to be an Electrical Engineer, mainly because I wanted to design stereos, etc.
But i concluded that an EE has wayyyyy to much responsibility , and now I'm looking into Audio Engineering (maybe with a math minor). Hopefully you guys might start seeing my name on your CDs.
My goal is to engineer the next Tool cd. And I may just have enough time to finish school and improve my reputation as an Audio Eng before they release it .

It's very easy: 4-5 hours a day in School, 5-7 hours a day at work, a worrisome lack of social life (I still have to adapt to American life... ), 2-3 hours daily of music... and the rest... that's why any review from me will only arrive on fridays (my day off everything, totally free) or in week-ends (usually I'm free after 5 pm)....Believe me, without job or school, I'd crush many people's posting-records around here... ...

I am a psychiatric nurse since 1986 and after all those years I still love my job: helping mainly schizophrenic people to rebuild their lives by searching for a new balance (less pressure, daily structure, finding distraction, etc.). My work alternates from giving medication and having talks about how to cope with their psychiatric disease to cleaning the room and listening to music or even playing guitar with them. Every weekend I organise a music DVD meeting, then we watch Pink Floyd, ELP, Ten Years After, Supertramp, David Bowie or Led Zeppelin because most of them are aged between 30 and 50 and they have pleasant memories about this music It's sometimes a very tough job but also very grateful and I can put a lot of my enthousism, energy and ideas in it and I have a lot of freedom to do my job, not many 'chiefs' around because that's doesn't match with my authority -conflict

Therapy through prog - I love it! Seriously though, I'm impressed with your obvious love of what you do, especially as I'd imagine it can be extremely challenging at times - all power to you
Personally - I work in credit control (have done similar for most of my working life); I'm very good at it, but I wouldn't say I particularly enjoy, or dislike the job (although I do like the people I work with, which is a bonus) - as far as I'm concerned, it's just a job, pure & simple. It means the bills are paid, there's food on the table & we can go for a beer when we want to - I'm not ambitious, career-wise (that way lies stress & disappointment) and I refuse to be defined by my career. In short, I work to live, not vice versa.

I think to really love what you do for a living is a real blessing, I have had some really grotty jobs, and some good jobs, and I completely admire those with true vocational calling.
Erik, it sounds like you do a marvellous job in a difficult field, well done you!
It sounds like you have a healthy attitude Jim, getting the right work/life balance is something a lot of people struggle with.
I think I am happiest in my current occupation because I 100% believe in what I do, when it is hard, or when I am tired, I still believe in what I do, and that's what keeps us going.

I have a lively and interesting job many would run a mile from - i am a security officer in a local tertiary college, that is 6th form teenagers from a myriad of ethnic backgrounds and cultures, including asbo's.
do i enjoy it? of course! the work can be very demanding of your patience sometimes and is not without risk, but careful diplomacy and a sense of humour wins through in most situations, it becomes something of an art, some try and get one over on you all the time. most of the students are fine and work hard to get into Uni, but you always get a handful who want to test you out.
today we've had them playing football in the car park and water fights - a quiet day!
i've survived nearly ten years in this occupation with hardly a scratch, so i must be doing something right
it's very rewarding when some come back and see you after a few years and have made something of themselves.

<<I think to really love what you do for a living is a real blessing>>
Man, how true that is. I hate to think what would've happened if I hadn't gone to college. For 5 years after high school I worked at a grocery store. I didn't mind it, but really wasn't going anywhere. Then in 1989 I was fired for doing something really stupid (I was a kid...and not a very smart one). The next year I went from one dead end job to the next, but then I decided to go to college. Sold my car and started the Fall of 1990 and made it all the way through with a degree (even accepted into Clemson's graduate program, but really didn't want to stay in school) and now doing what I never thought possible. Funny how life works.

If only I had a job, I'll have to have one when school gets out (for sure which is surprisingly soon).

I'm not that poor (yet). I had to get a loan out to pay for the rest of my school, so most of the money I have left is from that (maybe 200 dollars or less). Most of it I have to use on food, too.
Last semester, when I was out of school, I couldn't get anyone to hire me cause of my hair and facial hair, ridiculous, I'll have to cut my hair soon too, just to be safe, probably around when school ends or sooner.

I guess its not as bad for me, seeing as I'm in high school still but most of my friends all have jobs already and I'm still yet to have a paying job

I didn't worry about working until the summer I graduated from high school, I got a job then fine, but it sucked and I only worked for less than 2 months.
I once had to survive on 20 dollars or something for 2 weeks, not very pleasant, but I did it. Luckily, I don't have to drive much at all, I have a room (on campus, that does suck, but still), and at that time, I think I had some food left in my room.

oh wow, that's a very impressive feat I could easily do it now, what with living at home and all that, but I can't even imagine doing that in a couple years...

I learned to adjust from being at home and having everything, to being away with very little, it's actually easier to adjust than you'd think, at least it was for me (and I'm around 6 hrs away from home btw).

Does it count as a job if you arent on a fixed schedule?
Because my school pays me X amount of dollars to perform the music to all of the drama club productions.

. Thanks for the idea Erik.
I already have impingement of the right supraspinatus tendon and I'm beginning to experience some symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome on my right hand. Not very good.

Just got my file from Hugh Syme today for our magazine. He took a pretty dull concept and made it look very nice. As soon as I lay it out, I'll post it.

I'm standing on the till, shouting "next, please". I'm not enjoying it, but there are always some interesting moments when you are a cashier...

The right work/life balance is essential, I think, to maintain some kind of sanity; I've refused about 4 or 5 promotions in the last year or so (although I did take one in the end) - as far as I'm concerned, career ambition is something to concern other people. The further you travel up the corporate ladder, the easier it is for the snipers to spot you.

My job has recently started to suck really hard.
I'll be writing a CV and start sending it to various employers, soon.
