You know that album that is almost perfect, so close, but you know you cant give it 5 stars? Well, this is what this topic is about. I think that there are a lot of this albums in this genre, I even dare to say most of the total clasics are not 5 stars, but 4.5! So, name a few, a few of this "one step short of perfection"! Here I go for now

Gnidrolog - Lady Lake
King Crimson - Lark´s tongue in Aspic (in fact, only ITCOTCK is 5 stars in my book)
Dün - Eros ...why? I dont know, but it´s painfully close
Anglagard - Hybris
Camel - Mirage

Love that album!

Presence got 4 stars from me, while Coda got 5. I haven't reviewed In Through The Out Door Yet, but I can assure it will get high marks from me when I get around to actually typing the review up.

Against the grain, I knowLOL

I agree to some extent. First off, I really didn't even think they belonged here, but they're one of my favorite bands so why not review them and give them the credit they deserve?

Plus it takes guts to tell thousands of Led-Heads that their last 3 releases far eclipsed their earlier workWink

That doesn't take guts, it takes a difference of opinion.

It's actually my favorite Zeppelin album.  If I ever actually reviewed it, it would be 5 stars easy.

Agalloch - The Mantle
Deep Purple - In Rock
Adagio - UnderWorld (The first half of the album is a masterpiece, the second...)
Death - The Sound Of Perseverance
King Crimson - ITCOKC (for me, Red is the masterpiece)
Dream Theater - Awake
Genesis - Nursery Cryme
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Pain Of Salvation - The Perfect Element I (for me, Remedy Lane is their masterpiece)
Pink Floyd - Wish you Were Here (We all know what are the masterpiece, and the non masterpiece tracks of this great album)
Rush - Moving Pictures (Yes, I prefer 2112; second half of Moving Pictures falls a lot)
Spock's Beard & Neal Morse (Almost all their material is great but not masterpiece)
Uriah Heep - Salisbury
A.C.T. - Last Epic (really near, but maybe too poppy for me for a masterpiece)

Right now, I can think of:

H To He Who Am The Only One (Van Der Graaf Generator)
Signals (Rush)
Animals (Pink Floyd)
Selling England By The Pound (Genesis)
Stratosfear (Tangerine Dream)
+ four or five more Tangerine Dream albums LOL
Moondawn (Klaus Schulze)
+ six or seven more Schulze albums LOLLOL
others.

having a 4.5 star system would be great for reviewing these types of albums, though i fear that would lead to .5's for all stars, including .5 and 5.5 (hey you never know...)

Almost every album that probably deserves five stars would get a four (but a really high four!) outta me.

ELP - Trilogy
Genesis - Wind And Wuthering
IQ - Tales From The Lush Attic
IQ - The Seventh House (Ever is worth 5 stars!)
Yes - The Yes Album

those are examples of albums that are all close to masterpeices but don't quite make the grade despite the quality of material being very strong.

well, accodring to my ratings reviews, I have given 243 albums on this site either 4 or 5 stars...

if we said that a third of them (on average) are 4.5 stars, then I would have to list 81 'almost perfect' albums...LOL

Some albums I think deserve 4.5 stars that came up in my head at the sight of this thread:

Samla Mammas Manna - Klossa Knapitatet
Dream Theater - Images and Words (their only consistent album in my opinion, see my review)
Art Zoyd - Musique pour l'Odyssée
Art Zoyd - Génération Sans Futur
Jethro Tull - Aqualung

By the way böthy: Dün's album is five stars. Wink

A lot of my Rush reviews (the 4 star ones) are really between 4 and 4.5

I just find flaws with the albums that ruin the masterpiece the rest of the album is.

But some albums I bumped up to 5 anyway. Like 2112, Moonmadness, Red.

There's no way that 2112 is a 5 star Prog album! "Side two" ie all tracks except the title track, is way too week and for the most part not prog.

It might be a five star rock masterpiece but Prog Masterpiece no way!

I know that. But it is Rush and I love that band (my brother hates me because I have 19 CDs of Rush while he only has 2 or 3 of his favorite bands)

And I was in a happy mood when I did that review ( I usually am when playing Rush so some of my reveiws of them can be slightly ignored).
