I just re-listened to Bath tonight and read the lyrics along to it. It was shocking, disturbing, paralyzing and simultaneously moving. I was literally moved to tears. It was one of the most poignant experiences I can say I've ever had with an album. In short... Maudlin of the Well are bloody brilliant.
So, I want to get some love for MotW going. Discuss.

"Bath" is quite possibly the best prog-metal album I've heard (not a big fan of the genre, admittedly), so I can definitely share your enthusiasm.
It's amazing how effortlessly they blend several styles together - styles that shouldn't have anything in common at first sight.
I seriously need to get my hands on "Leaving Your Body Map".

I really tried to like that album, I really wanted to... It just didn't work at all. Maybe if the singing wasn't so poor and off-key most of the time... maybe if the combination of styles was done more fluidly, more coherently, without giving me the feeling of something "looked for"... maybe I would like it. Kayo Dot is a more mature affair in my opinion and I'll stick to them for the time being.

I was actually listening to Kayo Dot right after turning on the computer.
motW where a great band! I really like their Bath album. Geography is one of the most emotional songs I've ever heard. Toby's voice is part of why I like them alot too along with their really soft and mellow songs. Leaving Your Body Map is another great album, but I still prefer Bath (check out my immature reviews). I still need to get their debut.

My Fruit Psychobells is great.... but I'd probably say it's my least favorite of their three. It's certainly the lowest quality in terms of recording quality. But all in all, it's a magnificent album just not as fully realized and polished as Bath and Leaving Your Body Map.

I agree that My Fruit... is not as good as the other two, in places amateurish and in performance quite lacking, not to mention the production, but I can't imagine being the same me without having heard all the songs on that album.

I love Maudlin of the Well, who I think were one of the most original bands in music, not just progressive metal.
I would still recommend My Fruit Psychobells,it was the first thing I heard from them and it definitely hooked me.While not quite as good as Bath and Leaving Your Body Map,it is still a very good album, especially for a debut.

Has Maudlin as much metal as Kayo dot? (And of course that is sarcasm), cause I just cant see the point of having Kayo Dot in prog metal. And, is Maudlin as ....ehmmm how to put it, "anti-song" as Kayo Dot, or is it more coherent and structural? And of course, this is not a bad thing and I mean it with respect, dont get offended you Kayo Dot fans

MoW has more metal in their sound than Kayo Dot.And while the song structures of MoW are not exactly conventional, they are not as "free-wheeling" as Kayo Dot's tunes.

Yep, Maudlin have a bunch of early demos that they've recorded which are widely unavailable. Toby responded to constant demand from their fanbase for the opportunity to hear them by including what he considered the only remotely worthwhile bits from the demos as bonus tracks on Bath and Leaving Your Body Map's reissued versions.
Anyway, Maudlin of the Well are prog-metal's undeniable pinnacle. Kayo Dot is fantastic as well but can't quite reach the same heights as Bath and Leaving Your Body Map. It makes me endlessly happy to see that these guys can now generate get a two page "appreciation" thread, I remember when I first added them to the site virtually nobody had heard of them.

It was with your strong approval and support of them Bryan that helped grow interest (certainly interested me). Now I think Bath and Leaving Your Body Map (which may be one of my favorite Prog Metal albums ever) are splendid (doesn't even begin to describe it really) albums.
That and Kayo Dot's rise up on this site might have also been a contributor.

Bryan, pal, I was just getting ready to email you to thank you for the day you first mentioned MotW to me nearly 2 years ago. But then I saw you posted here so I figured thanking you here was as good a place as any. This band has truly changed my life and my appreciation for music. I adore them.
And I'm glad that this thread has gotten to two pages! I wasn't sure it would even get past the first when I created it. It's great to know that MotW is as beloved to others as they are to me.

A fabulous band.
I discovered them on BNR a few years ago and the praises BNR (another Bryan) gives them persuaded me to get it. I was upset when I heard they split, but then came the announcement that Kayo Dot, a new group would be their new incarnation.
And the rest is history...

That's fabulous, Assaf!
You should stalk Toby and beg him to sign particular parts of your body. Furthermore, don't forget to remind him that a certain individual expects to see him in a tour to Latvia, performing a cover of "They Aren't All Beautiful" much to the pleasure of the moshpit.

I have actually ben listening to Maudling of the Well since 2002. I remember ordering Bath and Leaving your Body Map from darksymphonies.com, and they came in about 2 days. Bath is definitely in my top 5 albums of all time, they manage to do so much more than Dream Theater or Symphony X, or any other prog metal I have ever heard. I also had the pleasure of seeing Kayo Dot in a very small club last year in Washington. The stage was not big enough to hold all of the band members; I ended up standing right behind Toby. Although they only played 3 songs, it was a great show, and was actually written up in the Washington Post that weekend! It was hard to tell if the reviewer had a favorable opinion of the show, he was more interested in discussing the avant garde aspect of the music.

Fantastic, refreshing band. The only weak spots are the soloing and singing, but i don't mind the singing, it adds a charm/character and fits with the theme of the music. The soloing i'm not so keen on, but it's no big deal. The rest of the music makes up for it.
I see most people prefer Bath over Leaving Your Body Map. I'm the other way round. Bath is still fantastic though. Besides, i kind of think of them as a double album, since they were written/recorded at the same time and LYBM is a continuation of Bath.

I'm looking forward to hearing them once I listen to Kayo Dot. Although the death growls might be a problem...
I started listening to Kayo Dot because people kept talking about their new album, but I really listened to it because I was intrigued, sicne this was a prog-metal band, when el bothy was complaining that he still didn't "get it". :)
Wow, these lyrics are weird. I only glanced over them, but are motW/Kayo Dot's lyrics wiccan/pagan or something? I don't care much about the artist's personal life (as long as I know he's not summoning demons to help him write a guitar solo :) ), but occult lyrics make me really uncomfortable.
I was reading an interview, and while I really respected Toby from what I read in a recent interview, a motW interview really confused me. WTF is he talking about with astral dreaming and all this crap? I see the point he's trying to make (he's being inspired by the Divine Muses, so to speak), but the stuff with taking music from the astral plane and lucid dreaming is very strange...

Just HAVE to resurrect this (not that it's really that dead) after re-listening to both Bath and Leaving Your Body Map and then starting them all over again because goodness gracious this stuff is absolutely stunning.
I truly love these albums. I had always liked them immensely, but, until today, I have never actually loved them. They are like a part of my friggin soul. Both of them. both are complete 5-star masterpieces for me. I need to review them soon.
As good as Kayo Dot. As good as Choirs of the Eye, one of my favorite albums of all time. Absolutely superb.
I dunno how I missed the awesomeness of these records before now...I'm glad they fully clicked though. Goodness they are amazing!

^I have been doing that up until Choirs of the Eye - I *sort of* like all four of those albums but I'm trying to consolidate them into one super-mixtape... whereas I find Dowsing and Downwards are both strong enough to not need pruning. =)
Still no progress on it, it's hard to decide.

I have performed similar marathons before but including Toby's solo stuff and Tartar lamb. Several times actually. I have a playlist with only Driver stuff in it.
It's good stuff.

Hello guys, I figured this would be a good place to ask: where can I get their albums without paying the stupidly high OOP prices of Amazon? They sound good and I like Kayo Dot, so I'm interested, but I'm not paying $50 for one CD.

Well I've heard on the grapevine that, because of the rarity of owning their CDs, they are not too worried about pirating maudlin music...not that I'm suggesting it.
I'm more, erm, mentioning it...

http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=8356 - MAUDLIN OF THE WELL — Bath Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=13226 - schizoid_man77 (Ian Bishop) Prog Reviewer
Toby Driver, a genius in my book, maybe one of the most original thinkers to be born, nothing he has done ever lost my attention for too long, almost everything is perfect. My biggest icon in modern music, whether it be the chaos of Kayo Dot, the eeriness of Tartar lamb, or the just plain weirdness of his solo album, everything he touches turns to gold. Of all his projects though, Maudlin of the Well is the greatest, honestly a band that has done so much for me as far as my musical growth. This group helped me expand my mind to so many different genres, and styles, but not only that, but how to blend them into three monumental albums, this one being the best, BATH.
The music of Maudlin of the Well is incredibly diverse, one minute you may be in a straight up death metal song, the next you're listening to some jazzy horns, the next you're listening to an acoustic folky song, and it all fits. They're so eclectic it wouldn't be wrong to call this band avant Garde, to me though, that's the beauty of the music, they're not afraid to put some intricate post rocky lead line of a horn section, or add a church organ with some death metal vocals to add a doomy effect. To me it all works, it's possible to make beautiful prog metal, with strings and not be a lame symphonic power metal band, and you can add horns and long songs and not be a post metal band, this group belongs to no genre.
Bath is a companion album to the almost equally amazing Leaving your body map, and apparently is the first part of who knows what concept. It's a bit diverse than Leaving your body map, as far as the songs go, and also, by the time you hit the song Birth pains and astral projections, you feel a certain emotion that just eeks out of the speakers that just doesn't hit the same level on LYBM. This assortment of ten songs may very well be my favorite made, every song is extremely special in it's own way and each very different than the other. It's more jazzy, it's more metal, yet at the same time it's a little softer than anything else Toby has ever put out. It's just beautiful.
Okay you're probably tired of listening to my fanboyism, so I'll get into detail about the music. While most of the songs are indeed metal, most of the smaller tracks around the metal songs are usually softer, acoustic interludes, each one staring with a jazzy chord progression, then slightly building up with some horns playing a melody, then another guitar will come in and play perhaps a lead line, or a parallel chord progression, while the double bass will throb away. There are four track in these two albums called the interludes I-IV. The other softer tracks on this album is the opening song song, and the beautiful three minute Marids gift of art. The firs an instrumental starting with only an acoustic guitar, and progressively getting bigger and bigger adding multiple guitars, keyboards, and eventually drums, until the very end when te electric comes in for a huge climactic ending. Marids gift of art is just a pretty lullaby by Driver, with only his guitar his voice, and a trumpet to end the song. I know sounds corny, but it really is one of the prettiest songs you may ever hear.
Then there's the metal song, all of which follow no common structure, and are chopped up into three or four different sections. While most start with an eerie series of notes on the guitar, keyboard, or church organ, some like they're not all beautiful start with a bang and go right into furious drumming and strumming, with some of the deepest, yet clearest death metal vocals ever, which just capitalizes on Toby's amazing voice. This song is pretty much the closest MotW gets to a straight up death metal song, though still is very proggy. The other songs usually are guided by the vocals, most of the time harsh as you go on to crazy chord progression, double bass drumming, and some incredible guitar wizardry. The breakdown will come when the vocals become the most horrifying, and the guitar at it's most crushing. The atmospheric keyboards will then take over most likely with some electric guitar in the background doing a lead line, and some clean vocals usually singing about something simple, like love, trust, or a crazy day. From then on the song will almost disappear to nothing, then out of nowhere the chaos comes back and just punches you in the face for the last minute or so of the song.
There are two main elements in the music of Toby Driver that he never fails to bring forth, and there is no exception on this album: His Electric guitar and Voice. His electric guitar is on every son except the interludes, and there just seems to be layers and layers of it, I know there is more than one guitar player, but sometimes I can swear I can hear four different guitars going around at some point, and I just find it amazing that he can go ahead and capitalize on the electric distorted guitar, whether it be a lead line, solo, or riff and still make it tasteful, and not too pompous or obnoxious.
His voice is will always be a staple point to all his music, it's so youthful, and almost punky, and he doesnt have a very large range, but what he's got he's able to melt it perfectly with the music he creates, and create an atmosphere of some solemn depressing mood. He also has so many different types of grunts and scream. In my fruit psychobells you hear a black metal scream (sadly he doesnt use past that), an extremely deep death growl, a post metal hoarse yell that IMO makes Birth pains and astral projections one of their most superior songs, and there's also that blood curdling scream, which he used all the way up to Dowsing the anemone with the copper tongue.
I understand why some people can be turned off to Maudlin, their just so crazy and eclectic, it's very inaccessible, and it takes weathered ears to learn to appreciate this music, also unlike Kayo Dot, the harsh vocals, and extreme metal are arguably more prominent than anything else, and we all know that's not for everyone. Kayo Dot may be the reincarnation of Maudlin, but I think they lost a little of their youthful originality in that band, don't get me wrong, Kayo Dot may also be in my top five Fav bands, but what some people call immaturity is what I find best in Maudlin.
I hoped what I wrote can shine a little light on this band, or album, but really words are no substitute, you have to subject yourself to the music, and drill it many many times, before one day it will just click, and you'll just be taken back by the power and majesty of this band. Like I said though these guys are truly not for everyone, but to anyone into metal, and want some music with that extra punch, I cant recommend this band to you enough, this is probably my favorite group to exist, and need to be heard.
5 stars no doubt
My longest review to date!

And your review was awesome. Inspires me to hurry up and write mine...maybe tomorrow

Also, I keep hearing people pseudo-compare this band to My Dying Bride in reviews and the like across the web?
How similar? Obviously not really similar...still.
Basic question is: Worth my checking out?

My Dying Bride? I havnt actually heard them, but they are always put in with the doom metal lot like Anathema , Paradise Lost and Katatonia. Never once heard them described as avant gard metal.

Schizo, I take it you have an original release rather than a 2006 re issue. Be glad of that, Uncovering the Gift really ruins the flow of Bath as its very old and badly produced (I read in the liner notes that it was the first song Driver ever recorded, way back in the mid 90's).
Not having much luck in getting the song names right are you.

MY DYING BRIDE is one of the best bands on this bloody Earth, and I suggest you should...wait, you all MUST check'em out (who didn't yet). Especially albums like "The Angel and The Dark River" (1995), "Like Gods of the Sun" (1996), "The Dreadful Hours" (2001), "Songs of Darkness, Words of Light" (2004) and DVD "Sinamorata" (2007)
They even were on the Archives here (added by Trickster F.), but later removed (along with KATATONIA)

Astral Projection is kind of a synonym of sorts for an out-of-body experience, but it's a bit different in many ways, namely that it has more in common with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream - lucid dreaming than with out-of-body experiences, but the difference is;
Astral Projection is much more spiritually based and kind of occult, really, as far as I know. But it is basically a reinterpretation of a lucid dream as far as I can tell.
Lucid dreaming is really cool I think. I wish I could learn to temper my dreams as such...
EDIT: I meant to quote your previous post but people get the point. I answered the question at least, haha.
