As the current system allows a genre status only to artists, so all of the albums by "Vaious artists" are indicated as "Various genres" style. Could there be a genre definition placed on their album data somewhere then?

As for example the Nuggets box 2: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=10031 - http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=10031

The Various artists section is certainly in need of an overhaul Eetu, it is becoming a bit big.

By definition though, compilations can often cover a diversity of styles. Any thoughts on how we could perhaps split the VA up a bit? Separate sections for tribute albums, concept albums, samplers etc. perhaps?

By the way Bob, I have noticed that "Soupsongs Live: The Songs of Robert Wyatt" is credited as Robert Wyatt, when it should be credited as Various Artists.

However, even though Robert Wyatt didn't perform on this live album (but he was in the audence), I feel it may actually get a better coverage and hopefully, some reviews, if it stays where it is.  It will likely get lost under Various Artists.  Annie Whitehead, who is the leader of the project, names it as Soupsongs, so maybe a separate entry under Soupsongs would be appropriate?  Most sites credit the album as Various Artists still though... it's one of those hard to define albums.

I shall try and review this album soon, as it needs one rather desparately.

Cheers Geck0.

I have moved it to the Various artists section, but added "Robert Wyatt Tribute" in brackets to the title.

It is important that we are consistent, otherwise others will add tribute albums under the artist instead of under Various Artists.

All the more reason for a separate tribute albums section maybe?

(Is it just my PC, or is there a problem with the sleeve picture displaying for this album?)

Different sections for Tributes" example would be fine.

Maybe some of the album genres with several types like "Boxset/compilation" and "single/sampler/promo/fanclub" could be separated too? A casual listener migh be more often interested of a single than a promo or a fancluib release of more uncertain quality.

Thanks Bob.  As it's not been reviewed yet, I hope the move doesn't confuse anyone!  As I said before, Annie Whitehead is the leader of the Soupsongs project and has performed concerts with her Soupsongs band, but the CD, as well as the cover art, show it to be Various Artists, so you are correct to move it to where it is now.  I just hope the album doesn't get neglected by potential reviewers.

The cover seems to have disappeared... maybe it's due to the move.

Here's the cover... there are smaller versions available via Google Image search:

Addendum: I've noticed that a lot of the Various Artists albums are in a series, is it not possible to group these together?

The thing is with the Soupsongs Project, I could probably write a biography, but I notice there isn't a place for a biography to go, on Various Albums albums.  Soupsongs is one of thos rare Various Artists albums that isn't a compilation and is almost its own project.

Any ideas on how to solve this?

I'm not sure how to update the cover, can anyone else help?

Grouping the albums in a series is only possible at the moment if they were released in the same year. Otherwise the year takes priority. Let me know of there are any I can do on that basis.

You could add the additional info to the releases info section of the album perhaps, or just incorporate it in a review.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply, Bob, much appreciated.  Well as I said, it would be beneficial to have some kind of biography associated with this album, as it's not a compilation, but a live album, performed by what is mainly the group Soupsongs, but with guests.

I'll try and write up something and get someone to add the bio into the releases information.  It won't need much, just a short explanation of what the album/project is about.
