Did anyone see this new Steve Coogan comedy last night and can tell me what the theme music was? It sounded familiar to me, possibly early Jethro Tull as it featured a flute?

I definitely heard a bit of "Time Was" from Argus in it.

Missed, it (foolish me). My comedy-geek chums gave it mixed reviews but overall it sounds like it was light on the joke front, but that's only to be expected of an establishing episode.

I found it was quite subtle humour on the whole and it won't appeal to everyone. I liked the musical references e.g. "Peter Frampton's vocoder". And the bit at the end where he shot the animal rights protester in the leg.LOL

The music used on the trailer was 'House of the King' by Focus, which does sound alot like Tull. I didn't see the show, though.

Sure you're not confusing Focus for Tull..??

I hear in the next series there's a sketch about the......errrmm.......shall we say "intense" guys on A Certain Music Forum, who only listened to the start & finish, to settle an argument about the theme music.....Wink

Actually, I caught most of the show.......except the beginning & end, so have no idea on the theme........I thought it was promising - many good in jokes (and thus, by definition, many more I didn't get......Embarrassed ).........I particularly liked the cringe-inducing change of pace in the middle where he & his GF get very intense towards each other........"You rock my world........".......a moment which out-Offices even Gervaise......

I'll watch it next week. The FOCUS!! track on the trailer should have got me interested, but I was in bed by the time it started. I had to be up before the rest of the human race this morning...

Interestingly, I seem to recall reading that Focus' "House of the King" was originally recorded as a TV theme for something else anyway!

It certainly won't appeal to everyone - referring to his new assistant's Nirvana t-shirt "any band who'll acknowledge Iommi's mastery of the fret are OK by me..." Face it, that line would have gone way over 99% of the wobbling class's heads.

Promising start to a series, though.

I forgot to mention "wasps are b*****ds". Very funny bit, and strangely appropriate as I had to pay someone to remove a wasps nest from under my house yesterday (not Steve Coogan).

I have an irrational fear of wasps. If one flys in the room I practically hyperventilate. Dunno why, I've been stung before a few times, but I was hardly traumatised by the experience...

Just thought I'd share that with you...

Still getting better - Monday's episode included him describing the mood change of a squirrel when it's consumed too much cocaine & getting misty eyed over the memory of his ex-wife throwing his Mellotron from Clifton Suspension Bridge - although...

1 - There is no way you can get a Mellotron in the boot of a 1970s Triumph Toledo.

2 - She'd have to be built like a brick outhouse to "throw" a Mellotron anywhere.

Sorry, just me being pedantic

There used to be - and presumably still is - a plaque on the pedestrian walkway on both sides of the bridge giving the Samaritans phone # - maybe the Mellotron Appreciation Society should rent space there, too...........Wink

I particularly liked the bit in "Saxondale" where, when his daughter's BF patronises his own GF by praising her wonderful personality (which, as we all know, is code for "she's fat"), he replies with a wonderfully crude, yet touching, & untrumpable response............I daren't quote it in full here...Embarrassed

You're being deliberately obtuse in copying only half of my post & thus presenting this bit out of context; the first half of that post explains my position quite clearly. I am sorry you're incapable of understanding why I chose not to spoil a joke by putting it in print; like I said, anyone interested can look at the clips on the link provided earlier.

Saxondale is constantly fantastic. What a brilliant character. I like the man (though I don't think I'm supposed too...)

I've been wondering about that Rush mix-up. Was it a genuine research mistake (which seems pretty unlikely if you ask me) or was it deliberate - a very subtle pointer that our man might never actually have worked as a roadie at all...? Maybe he's just a fantasist...? The Mellotron story is another clue.

It's probably just me!

I also wondered whether that was a deliberate error or not. Maybe they threw it in on purpose to see how may saddoes like us would write up and tell them about it (looks up address for Steve Coogan).

Steve Coogan was the "star in a reasonably priced car" on this week's 'Top Gear' - Jeremy Clarkson showed the clip from Saxondale where he did a job for a TV celebrity obviously based on JC...

Apparently Clarkson's wife found it most apt!

Did anyone else realize in the Will Ferrel comedy skit on SNL (where he plays Satan with a guitar)

That the music that plays when he explodes on to stage is Larks' Tongues Part One?

Good episode tonight. I felt last week's was a bit down on the usual standard, but tonight's was a cracker.

Rush - The Necromancer part three - The Return of the Prince. Where else would you hear that mentioned 3 times in one program. And in the same sentence as "hand ...". LOL
