Firstly Idea nuymber one, I am certain someone has suggested this but oh well I'll suggest it again, can we please have the ability to use half stars on our reviews, it would make reviewing so much more accurate, if you are cvoncerned that some people may only give just half a star on a particular album, then you could make it so there has to be a threshold of atleast one star before you start giving out half stars. It would make reviewing easier, since some albums arn't 5 stars yet they're more than four stars.

Secondly I thought wouldn't it be a good idea if each member could have a prog album list, and other members could access to see what they like, the member could list their personal top five or ten albums and/of bottom five or ten albums, I thought this might be a good idea to see what people like and to get to know their tastes, it would also mean that we can share what we like and own, because although we may right reviews, our music collections are continuing to grow so our reviews can't keep up with them. I am trying to get out of the habit of having reviews with stars and no writing, and rather having written reviews, but there is no way I will have a written review for every album I iwn I have over 100 CDs as well as a few records and my collection is still growing, and I can't be expected to write as many reviews a Seantrane or whoever I'm just not that super human (no offence SeantraneBig smile), so I think the album list is a good idea, I've seen other websites have similar lists, I've seen a game website that has game lists and whishlists, to share with other members, so a music list and a music wishlist in my opinion would be a good idea.Smile.

What are other views on this, I just hope the second suggestion doesn't require a massive amount of programming etc, (I know squat about computers).

Reading this I cannot help but to hint people towards my website, which offers:

- half stars (even 15 steps instead of 5)
- Recent Purchases List
- User Pages with Top Album lists
etc.

'review' and 'ratings' are two different things - more stars will have no effect on reviews

if you are cvoncerned that some people may only give just half a star on a particular album, then you could make it so there has to be a threshold of atleast one star before you start giving out half stars. It would make reviewing easier, since some albums arn't 5 stars yet they're more than four stars.

So, what would your 4½* rating be defined, when 5* is 'Essential: a masterpiece of progressive music' and 4* is 'Excellent addition to any prog music collection' or are you proposing to ignore the definitions?

As you might guess, I believe the current system to be perfectly adequate and should be left as it is.

^ the problem is that with the current system you either end up with too few 5 star albums, or too few 4 star albums. With too many 5 stars albums you get accused of awarding 5 stars too lightly ... with too many 4 star albums in respect to 5 star you end up punishing many great albums by lumping them together with many albums that are "just" very good.

Mike is right also look at this dilemma; I gave Can's albums Landed, Monster Movie and Soundtracks four stars, I havn't reviewed Tago Magoand  Ege Bamyasi yet because I'm a bit perplexed, neither albums are flawless yet they are superior to the other three, but If I could rate them 4 and a half I would.
But since there is no half vote I am stuck with either underrating their albums or overrating them. Many reviewers have this problem and have written in their reviews such statements as 4.5 really, or 3.5 etc.
Many other websites do half votes look at amozon I think it would be more efficient and would stop making reviews so frustrating.

My vote would go for a half * system (or a range of 1-10 *). There isn't quite enough legroom in the 5 * system. It's like when your granny asks you if you like a certain sweet or biscuit - you know, if you say yes, you'll be forcefed the damn things for ever and a day; if you say no, she'll remind you that you don't like them every tea time till armageddon. We need a "maybe", both for granny & for PA ratings! Wink

I would suggest that at least some people ignore the definitions now. We have a number of reviewers with 95% or more of their reviews being five stars, even reviewers with hundreds of reviews. It's hard to imagine all those hundreds of albums are actually "essential".

But as for half-stars, I would like to at least see the 3-star range made more granular somehow. "Good" is such a general term, and there's such a broad range between "Excellent addition to any prog collection" and "collectors only".
