For many this should not be very appealling, but this question rears it's ugly head every so often. Why should Scots, Welsh and Noerthr Irish support the English at major footie tournaments?
For somr, they genuinely believe that being part of the UK entitles the English to have 100% support from the home countries. Why?
There are many English people who do not support Scotland, Wales or NI in football tournaments, so why should we support them.
It is an idividual choice, and the arrogance from the London based media is enough to fill the oceans with puke (sick).
I will always support Scotland, but will never ever support our southern neighbours, even at tiddlywinks. Rivalry is good, and long may it continue.

I personally enjoy the bitter rivalry between England, Scotland and Wales. I think you should have a war.

We would, but America would join in 2 days before the end and claim all the victories.

And... in the case of football if UK goes to the Olympics with a team where English players are majority? No supporting for UK?

This was Irish community feasting to be sure! British condescending attitude would certainly not provoke their outright support to the Catholic Ireland unless England and other UK related teams already eliminated
Not meaning to belittle Scotland, Wales , N Ireland, but from an outsider's view, it is highly unfair for other countries that UK gets systematically four entries into any international sports tournament (Rugby being even more blatant of this inequity)

It's a lot easier for the English to root for Eire (Rep of Ireland) at these events, simply because Eire isn't a part of the UK........and don't forget, also, that (certainly during the Jack Charlton years, and probably still) there were more English accents in the Irish dressing room than in the English.....apart from a small number of good genuinely Irish players, a lot of the Irish team were guys who could have played for England, Scotland or NI, but whose Irish Grandmothers qualified them for Eire........
Now I'll go and put on my tin hat & await the incoming.......

Something that might help shed some light on the inter-regional warfare in the UK.....an extract from a piece by Robert Philip (a Scottish Personage, apparently) in the Telegraph's sports section today......he describes the wording on a tea-towel which he reserves for special occasions.....
"It depicts God summoning one of His Archangels to explain: "Today, Gabriel, I'm going to create Scotland; I'll make it a country of beautiful mountains, purple glens and green forests. I will give Scotland clear, swift-flowing rivers and stock it with succulent salmon, the hills will be roamed by herds of deer. The land will be lush and fertile on which the Scots can grow barley to brew into an amber nectar that will be cherished all over the world." "Excuse me,God," interrupts Gabriel, "don't you think you're being tad (sic) over-geberous to these Scots?" "Oh , no," replies the Almighty, "wait 'til you meet their neighbours.""
Philip also goes on to explain:
"...when it comes to the field of sporting play, the average Scot would support the Daleks against England, which is why every Paraguay, T&T and Sweden replica shirt has been sold out in Glasgow..."

a personal note: for a journalist, Philip writes sh++e English......

The UK get four entries because it's four separate countries.

The UK get four entries because it's four separate countries. WHAT???? !!!!!!!!!!
|
How come they are not four countries in international or European political countries
Only the UK >> UNITED KINGDOM is a recognised country >> I have yet to see embassies in Cardiff, Edimburgh and Belfast
on the same scale, UK = Belgium
Scotland, England, Wales = Flanders or Wallonia
And N Ireland is Eire, if it was not for that illegal troop occupation

Local rivalry exists everywhere in sport, Rangers hate Celtic, Geordies hate mackem scum, Transvaal hates Northern Transvaal and Naas Botha. I wouldn't expect sweaties to support England.
In fact the most hilarious thing of the world cup so far is the amount of jocks supporting Trinidad and Tobago.
1) They meet England in group stages, in fact on Thursday night 2) They have a player named Jason Scotland (lol) 3) He plays for St. Johnstone
50,000 Scots have bought T&T strips with Scotland across the back.
Brilliant!

BBC World Cup Guidelines for commentary team.
1 -Within 1 minute of kick off in the opening match (Germany v Costa Rica),the commentator must mention England.
2 - Regardless of what two teams are contesting the final, England have to be mentioned within the first minute.
3 - The commentator shall refer to the Falkland Isles in passing at some point in the match if England play Argentina.
4 - Whenever a hat trick is scored, comparisons with Geoff Hurst will be made within seconds of the third goal hitting the net.
5 - Should England wear their red jerseys, then '1966' should be mentioned approximately 20 times.
6 - 1966 will be mentioned approximately 10 times a match, or only on 4 or 5 occasions for matches not involving England.
7 - Prior to the captain of the winning team lifting the trophy, the commentator will mention Bobby Moore. And 1966.
8 - When Germany are playing, they must be referred to as being arrogant by the commentator on at least 14 occasions. This must refer to their style, their passing, their haircuts and their general footballing ability.
9 - Should England play Germany, mentions of Winston Churchill, Dambusters, The Luftwaffe and Adolf Hitler will be compulsory. And 1966.
10 - All Scottish members of our commentary team must continue to refer to England as "we" and "us".
11 - We must ensure that nationalistic stereotypes are adhered to. Of course, the Germans are arrogant. The Spanish are bottlers, The Ivory Coast are fast but bad at defending, The Angolans are disorganised, The Argentinians are cheats and the French are only good because their best players play in England.
12 - For matches not involving England, we must only discuss the players that are playing in England. (eg Holland v Argentina should be referred to as Van Nistelroy v Crespo).
13 - The mythical "bulldog spirit" phrase should be used as often as possible.
14 - Each match involving England should begin with the phrase "England Expects."
15 - Should any player be involved in an injury that involves the loss of teeth, then references to Nobby Stiles and 1966 are compulsory.
16 - If in doubt, mention 1966.
17 - Praise all of the stunning new stadiums in Germany but emphasise that they lack the presence of Wembley, the spiritual home of football since 1966.
18 - Commentators should feel free to imitate the style of Kenneth Wolstenholme, the hero of 1966.
19 - Should any team feature brothers playing together, then Jackie and Bobby Charlton should be mentioned.
20 - When England bow out after the first stage, we must emphasise that it is a massive blow to football and a serious loss to the World Cup.
