Mark Hughes (Footballer,ex Man Utd) Seb Coe (Brilliant athlete,hate his politics though) James Randi (Sceptic,magician and debunker of bunkum) My mate "Hawky" who tackled huntsmen on horseback despite having a false leg and a pathological fear of dogs. |

You have no clue how it is there now. Not very nice. All authority is corrupt, people are mean, there's dog crap all over Moscow after all. Back then ordinary life was better as long as you stayed politically correct: it was cleaner, the police was honest, people were nicer to each othe, you could walk through an urban area after 9 pm without worrying for your life and you could be confident you won't be pulled over because the cop doesn't have enough money for vodka, etc. Yes, he killed many people by sending them to construction sites that no one would volunteer to work on and the country couldn't afford to hire workers so they took the easy way: prosoners. I'm not saying that that was humane or fair it was just the easiest way out of chrisis. It's not similar to the holocaust by any means. Whatever. I'm just telling what I've heard from the people who lived then(I've lived in Russia 4 times than I lived outside), and some his political desisions/actions on official level were quite impressive. Read Churchill's descriptions of him, he admired Stalin as a person. You see, you get your stuff from History Channel, I get it first hand. He murdered not because of racism but because of need for manpower... And they did kick Hitler's butt after all.

Miracle, he killed 40'000,000 but not for manpower only, he commited millions of political murders, and that's a fact not only mentioned by the History Chanell, but by every history book.
Jews were massacred in Georgia where anti Semitism was almost a way of life.
He kicked Hitler's butt but USA and England made heir part, the difference is that USA and GB kept a democratic Goverment while Stalin became a mass murder as bad as Hitler.

You are right, nobody was as bad as Hitler if there's a way to rate how bad a Government or a Dictator is.
Numbers? I refuse to value human lifes in statistics, one life lost is bad enough.
Motives? One was a criminal racist searching for world supremacy, the other one was a criminal dictator thirsty for power and searching for....oh what a coincidence, world supremacy
A criminal is a criminal, maybe one (Hitler) was a Genocide and Stalin was just a mass murderer (Genocide is related with the extermination of a determined ethnic group, not for the number of victims as most people beleive -Penal Law 101-) but both were bad in their own way and I believe Stalin was not 100% free of the racist component.
If you were a Jewish in Berlin during Hitler's time or in Georgia during Stalin's Government you were equally dead.
Both are bad in different ways.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jesus. I might put him on my list for how much he helped the world, I'm not talking about "saving" us though, just helping individuals get through life and keeping a positive attitude even in times of worst.

I just admire Genghis Khan for being an incredibly brilliant and
iinnovative strategist. The Mongols were the first people to use
gunpowder as a weapon and I bellieve I've read that under Genghis Khan

I have three heroes, no more.
1. Jean Jacque Rousseau is probably the most brilliant political mind of all time, both socially and economically.
2. Socrates turned philosophy from a solitude concept to a social and interactive concept. Socrates was not the first philosopher, but expanded on it's possibilities the most.
3. Plato used Socrates in his dialogues to more conclusively explain what philosophy is, who a philosopher is, and how to philosophize. -------------

Musicians Peter Hammill Robert Wyatt Warren Haynes Bob Dylan Authors Charles Dickens Franz Kafka Douglas Adams Miscellaneous James Yeowell (a 19th century antiquarian and editor, it seems after researching him, we seem to bare many similarities) Eric "Winkle" Brown (a brilliant pilot, who flew many experimental aircraft in his time, from both ally and axis powers. He's still alive and is very much respected in his field) As well as personal friends of mine. -------------

nice thread. and thanks, ivan, for defending the truth.
i'll pick my heroes from some specific fields of activity, but not because of their achievements but of how they behaved as public persons. also, my defnition of the hero is that of someone who does his special thing by his own powers, so that's why i won't choose saints and others from the religious area because they had holy grace alongside their own strenght.

I can only think of 2 people that I really admire: Alessandro Zanardi, Nikki Lauda. Lauda crashed in the'76 German grand prix at the Nurbergring Nordshleife badly, suffering series burns and was read "the last rights" in hospital only to return to the cockpit of his Ferrari 6 weeks later. He won the 77 world championship after missing out on the 76 title by 1 point. Alex Zanardi was the 97 & 98 Champ Car World Series champion, but lost both his legs in a horrendous crash at the Euro Speedway Lausitz in Germany in 2001. He last 3/4 of his blood but continous to race in the World Tourig Car Championship with a hand controls BMW 320Si, though his prosthetic legs do controle the brakes. Though no a title challenger, he has won a couple of races this year and is pretty fast. ------------- Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005
