Hey there,

I just thought of a nice way to introduce visitors to new bands: why not add an option on the main progarchives.com page that brings up a randomly selected album of a randomly selected band when clicked?

Just an idea...

You mean somethink like a 'pick of the day' or something alike? I think that could be a great idea, but it would require a lot of work I guess.

Also, if something like this would happen, I personally think it should always be displayed, not only when you click it Wink

Overal a nice idea, because there's simply so many good music available within the various subgenres of prog that you can't easily find something new.

Interested in my reviews?
You can find them http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=784 - HERE

Could be, I don't know the internal structure of the site. On the other hand, based on a few assumptions, the solutions could be quite simple.

Let's assume:
a. The database behind the site has an album table somewhere, with a numeric index key
b. The index key number of the last added album (highest number) is known or can be retrieved
c. ASP supports a function to draw a random number

Then it shouldn't be that to add a link on the main page that selects the pick of the day?
But that may be a bit too technical, my job cross-section with hobby here...

That's the main point - besides the technicalities. I know a lot of bands and their music, but a feature like this would likely introduce me (and others) to a new little gem very once in a while.

It isn't hard indeed. I put a simple implemenation on my own web server.
Drawback: sometimes albums or reviews are removed (for obvious reasons), so you may get an error message if the random generator picks one of those. Something M@X could address if he ever wants to add this to the site.

But more important: this random album/random review thingy has introduced me to some interesting albums already...

Have a look http://www.hulshout.nl/randomreview.html - over here if interested (link opens in a new window).

Enjoy!

Angelo

P.S. I don't have access to the database, so I had to reserve space for 15000 albums and 10000 reviews for now. This will lead to additional error pages - unfortunately.

It's on the list for mailto:M@X - M@X to consider. Give him a month or so to get up to speed again.

LOL, how about random Dream Theater polls?

But seriously: I'll keep the page on my server until M@X has made up his mind.
