many people i know say they dislike prog in general, or think they dislike it, they may like one or two prog groups such as genesis but not as a music genre. saying that, i know many people who travelled to Bournemouth to see the new "war of the worlds" spectacular by jeff wayne and were very impressed, but would not become interested in prog as a result.

I voted No, because the most of my friends have a rather raw taste of music..

Some like Dream Theater (which is prog band I don´t likeEmbarrassed* and I think they like them as metal band and not as prog band)
Very few others are listening to Indie-Rock and to bands scratching the prog definition

BUT: I once managed to put in an Alamaailaman Vasarat CD at a huge sporting event at our schoolBig smile
(Thanks to the school sound team which actually only listens to Techno) and after that
(the music didn´t last long, very soon the music was changed againCry) many pupils were asking me for this amazing band... hehe

My friends don't like prog, I'm alone with this. Only one of my friends listens from time to time Pink Floyd and he ripped copies of my Yes and King Crimson albums but I'm sure that he doesn't listen to them really. In general my friends are not as interested in music as I am.

While I do not choose frriends on the basis of the music they listen to, I find that we tend to recognize each other and if they listen to the same music, this certainly betters the relationship

However I have made friends through prog gatherings and they are not friends in general

One friend, apart from those I write to/have met from here.

Most of my freinds like hip hop, dance music and some brit pop indie sh!t. Generally we dont discuss music. There's nothing to say. We can only see the bad in each others music choices.

I have a friend two friends who like Prog. Perhaps this is because we had a band that used to play interesting music many years ago. Most of the rest of them look at me strangely when I mention my music tastes.

It's interesting though. I found a collegue at work who likes prog!!! We had  a lovely talk about Genesis. Sometimes it just takes the initiative to mention it in conversation.

For example, i have a friend who know a lot of stuff about all genre of metals. An other listen more post rock and electronic music. Personnally i'm more in the symphonic/neo prog but i like to discovery new genres and specially new groups. It's the best way to knwo more about music, specially about prog. Each week i discovery new bands by internet or by my friends. This site an another tool to discovery progressive music.

I voted 'Yes', because although most of my friends don't listen to prog, most of my friends who are more into music listen to prog, like my bandmates.

In my band (I'm the bass player), the guitarist, the keyboardist and the drummer they all listen and worship Dream Theater, while I'm more into Camel and until recently starting to explore the whole world of prog this site displays and spreading the prog-gospel for my bandmates. For example, I recently introduced Ayreon to the drummer (using the LaBrie link) and he loved it right away, and then he suggested Ayreon to the guitar player, who also loved it and last Monday, the guitarist lent the keyobardist his recently purchased Ayreon copy.

What about the singer in my band? Well... he just listens to radio pop... ErmmConfused

- One likes Jethro Tull for the excessive flute
- One randomly checked out Remedy Lane after I raved about it, now is going to check out Üdü Wüdü after I raved about it
- One has Pink Floyd, Opeth, Tool and Genesis as four of their top artists on last.fm (of course, he has Dr. Dre and Eminem in the top twenty as well)
- One likes Pink Floyd, Tool and Dream Theater

I voted for "other" because most of my friends (I'm in high school, here) are blissfully unaware to the realm of prog rock music. I do know kids who listen to Tool, Dream Theater, and the like...mostly the more popular prog-metal out there, though not knowing that it's genre is in fact 'prog.' My girlfriend does enjoy Yes, Coheed and Cambria, and Radiohead. But on the whole, most of my friends haven't even discovered prog unless I have broadened their horizons (which I've done in a few cases Tongue).

Edit: I know no one who listens to it as avidly as me, especially when non prog-metal is concerned.

No of course....none of them even listen to rock. If you lived in Miami, Florida, you would understand. The only thing my friends listen to is rap, salsa, and reggaton (dont ask). This does not really bother me much becouse I used to be the same anyway before I stumbled upon King Crimson, Anglaguard, Gentle Giant, etc....Let me tell you,  anyone who listens to prog let alone rock here in Miami is a rarity.

Theres one friend at my school who listens to prog, actually for the most part we share very similar tastes in music.  For instance we both like Joy Division and New Order.  More to the point, the he listens to a lot of prog, many genres of prog.  To be honest, I can talk about prog/classic/modern rock forever and initiate countless discussions everyday, however, we seem to drift into conversation other than musc.  However, occaisonally he will suggest a band to me, and usuallay i will heed his advice and search the band he recommended.

His prog includes:

Sigur Ros

Brian Eno

Mr. Bungle and Fantomas

Tool

King Crimson (I believe this is his favorite band)

Yes

Van Der Graaf Generator

Dream Theatre

Pink Floyd

CAN

Porcupine Tree

Faust

Radiohead

Frank Zappa

Cry I dont have any friends...........
No really it sucks because all the people I used to sit around and discuss and dissect and listen to prog with when I was younger, we've all moved away and kind of drifted apart. I feel like an outsider and totallly alone in my progness. My wife doesnt understand, she thinks I listen to alot of "weird" music. Thank God for the internet and places like this where I can vent.
dont worry you have A LOT of friends here.you contact some by the e-mail adress and  made some friends w ho are like youThumbs Up

I put "other", as I actually have a friend who is quite keen on prog - we exchange recommendations, and he knows this site quite well (though he's way too shy to take part in the forum!). Another friend likes Pink Floyd and ELP, as well as many classic rock artists such as Springsteen and Dire Straits. The others... well, some listen to new wave or such, others to classic rock and/or Italian quality music, others to classical music. When I was younger, however, most of my friends and acquaintances were heavily into prog (especially Genesis).

Some of my friends do. I have a friend who likes groups like Opeth, King Crimson, Rush, Yes, and Frank Zappa as well as Mr. Bungle and things like that. On the whole, though, not a lot of them listen to the stuff I do.

One does although he likes the neo stuff more than I do. The other ones always look at me with a frown on their faces when I play Prog.

Both The Beatles and (especially!) The Doors are Prog...

Back to the poll question: no way! Well, some of them do, but they don't know it's called Prog...

They actually refuse to admit them as "prog"...
