I have to share my experience of this Spanish band; a friend enticed my wife and I to one of their concerts last night at The Barbican in London & we were utterly, completely & totally blown away.
What Afro Celt do with (to?) celtic music, these guys do with Flamenco – drummer plus 3 percussionists Carlos Santana would kill for (plus a special guest maniacal Indian drummer), two flamenco guitarists, an astonishingly talented bass guitarist, a vocalist with the kind of vocal range Sheila Chandra displays, two flamenco dancers (the first time I’ve ever seen a portion of the stage itself miked up!) and a scratching DJ who doubles up as an MC/rapper/bass synth player…
I can only try to describe the night as a cross between Afro Celt Sound System, the Talking Heads in full flood, The Gypsy Kings on speed, The Clash & the best Party you can ever remember - even this would not come close. I think every Catalan Spaniard in London was at the Barbican last night so the crowd was fiercely partisan and very vocal – the atmosphere was unreal – when they were finally allowed off the stage, the DJ invited the whole audience to an after-party at Brick Lane where they indended to carry on playing for free – I thought this was a joke until I saw the guys outside the hall with free afterparty tickets for anyone who wanted one. God only knows what time they eventually crashed!
Seriously - if you want a damned fine night out, and you get the chance, see them.

Last year I witnessed a DVD from Ojos De Brujo, excellent, very exciting music but also very varied, from pop to rock to flamenco to folk, etc. you have to be up to so many influences and shifting moods. I hope to see them soon, it's very progressive music and I just talked to a Spanish musician, he is very impressed by them!
