Okay, I searched, and don't think this has been done before.

Whatever your thoughts on the list (I know: "It's dominated by the same seven bands from the 70's", "too much Genesis in the top 10", "ELP isn't high enough", etc.), this isn't for list-bashing, like I said I did a search and read all the threads.

Go through the list and count how many you own, this isn't a competition, just for fun.

The List:

http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp - http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp

Thank god it's not a competition, because I'd be pretty weak:

39 for me (most of them by those seven bands alluded to above)

Numbers 1 thru 12, 14 thru 17, 23 thru 26, 29, 30, 32 thru 35, 40, 42, 44, 46, 49, 52, 53, 59 thru 62, 64, 69, 73, 83, 84, 90, 95 and 98.

That's 45 total.

Internet radio station Radioio 70's is playing "Supper's Ready" as I'm typing this.

On a quick check, 50 out of the top 100, with another 10 or so that I have owned but are no longer in my collection and probably another 15 - 20 that I've copied onto CDR or cassette.

For me it's RIVERSIDE - Second Life Syndrome

I count 38, hmm pretty nice score for me. I havn't been as much into prog as I am now since last year. And I also try to collect some less known albums and musicians (Sweet Smoke people, grasp their brilliance!).

because I know that music and because I don't like it (progmetal, imitations,... what is that all about). I want innovative bands so give me The Mars Volta, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd, Van der graaf, PT (!!!!!),.... all day long

Well it pre-dates it by a decade. Seminal means influential so yes, KC were more influential than Rush overall-indeed Rush were directly influenced by Crimson.

You cant compare Rush's influence on the genre to that of King Crimson.

I wasn't comparing anything, Tony. BUT...It's funny you say that last bit, because I see a LOT of popular rock bands waving the flag for Rush; but I've never seen anyone come out and say "I've got a heavy KC influence.", aside, from, well, Rush. <puts foot in mouth>

When I say I "disagree" I don't mean literally. Basically, I'm trying to say I prefer albums outside of the top 100, that's just based on the artists/albums I listen to.

I think that the list, for the most part is a great direction for people who want to discover Prog. It also has the classics in it. I think that the algorithm is fine the way it is. I have no problem with it. Like I said, based on my listening habits, the top 100 has no affect on me or these habits.

breathtaking

Seriously, this is my favorite prog album, it has pretty much everything you could want in an album of any type, not just prog. Greg Lake's vocals are amazing on it, and the music is superb. Robert Fripp is one of the best guitarists ever in my opinion, even if the talent isnt shown as much in this album as many of their later albums such as Lark's Tongue's in Aspic. You should buy INTCOTCK as soon as you can. I can see why alot of people dont like King Crimson's later work because it becomse extremely crazy after the 70's, but this album is a must own.

anyway, i have 47 of the top 100, but most of the stuff i dont have is metal because im not a huge metal fan and alot of the stuff on there is metal.

WOW, my first thread and three pages!

Not bad for a n00b.

And only a little list bashing.

Glad to see most people found it to be at least a somewhat interesting exercise.

40 here. Plenty of others on the wish list. Out of the top 20, I'm missing:

Thick as a Brick (I know, I know - it's on the list dammit)
ITCOTCK (I KNOW! I KNOW!)
Nursery Cryme (had it on vinyl at one point, just gotta get it on CD)
Second Life Syndrome - haven't really checked these guys out yet.
Mirage - just picked up Snow Goose a few months ago as an intro to Camel. I dig it, so this is on the list now...
Pawn Hearts - same deal, just picked up H to He as an intro a while ago. Pawn Hearts is def next.

Only 15.

My dad owns a few of them (Aqualung,  Tubular Bells), and I've ripped a few of the top 100 from people I know.  I've downloaded Deadwing to hear what it was like too.  So all in all I've probably experienced nearly 1/4 of the top 100, but only own 15, some of them are on LP (Moving Pictures, CTTE, Yessongs).

I own every one EXCEPT:
../Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=1114 - PENDRAGON
The Masquerade Overture

Hmm guess I've gotta get this one now, let's just hope the list doesn't change so I won't be forced to get one that I might not like, because so far I like every one of these albums,( but have only listened to about 70% of them)
Maybe that makes me the one with the most of the top 100 who has listened to the fewest of them?

65 for me.

I own no Dream Theater, Riverside, Tool, Pain of Salvation, LTE, or Mars Volta.

I lean toward late '60s and '70s prog, but I love Ayreon, Opeth, and Anglagard.
