It seems that whenever I put a prog album on the stereo my cat gets really agitated and paces around staring at the offending noise. As an experiment I just put on "Welcome back my friends..." and when the music kicked in he took off running for cover under the bed.
When I play something on the computer or the small boombox it doesn't seem to bother him as much.
Anyone else have this phenomena occur?
Maybe I should get scientific about this and try other genres etc..
On the other hand it doesn't seem to bother the dog at all.

My one cat has a similar problem. He
regularly likes to walk up to my prog CD collection and then knock them
all over one by one. He actually reaches behind the CD's and pulls them
out so that they'll all fall over. I have no idea why, but he seems to
enjoy the music at least, so it's all good.

Only explosion sounds in Bee Gees song "Tragedy" once made my cat frightened. It was long ago, when he was a kitten. Usually music (from soft sounds of CELESTE to LED ZEPPELIN albums played quite loud) doesn't disturb him. I think I have a special rock'n'roll cat.
Dogs sometimes make too much noise. Cats are nice, delicate and quiet, they never bark when your favorite song sounds. CATS ARE BEST ANIMALS FOR MUSIC LISTENERS!

Our cats definitely have musical tastes. The female one seems to like early Kraut, especially the quiet and contemplative pieces. The male one has the habit of "singing along" to some songs, especially to Gentle Giant.

You need a bong, a brown paper bag, some crisps and a Gong album.
- Take a hit off the bong
- Exhale into bag
- Put bag over cat's head for 10 - 15 seconds
- Break out the munchie food
- Put on the Gong album
Voila! You will have a prog loving (if soon to be overweight) cat!*
*Note to young people - forcing narcotics onto unsuspecting animals is deeply immoral, and this is not to be taken literally.

My cat doesn't seem to care when I have something playing, he usually is lazy and lays on the bed, while the music is playing, mabey it relaxes him, IDK.
He is, on the other hand, terrified of my guitar when I play it. Sometimes I don't even need to play it, just pull it out and hold it up, and he will run for his life.

^ Yep I agree to that! I have two young female cats. The little black one doesn't really care what I play - she tends to walk up the stereo speakers has a sniff and then walk off nonchantly as cats tend to do. My other cat is very sensitive to loud noises and usually can't be found in the house if the stereo is up. Curiously if the pitch is similar to a whistle she goes mad - gets all smoochy and if I am the whistler- shoves her face into mine - I suppose to try and shut down the annoying pitch as opposed to being truly affectionate. Does anyone else experience similar reactions from their cats with particular noise pitches?

Why Dogs Are Man's Bestfriend:
The later you are, the more excited dogs are to see you.
Dogs will forgive you for playing with other dogs.
If a dog is gorgeous, other dogs don't hate it.
Dogs don't notice if you call them by another dog's name.
A dog's disposition stays the same all month long.
Dogs like it if you leave a lot of things on the floor.
A dog's parents never visit.
Dogs do not hate their bodies.
Dogs agree that you have to raise your voice to get your point across.
Dogs like to do their snooping outside rather than in your wallet or desk.
Dogs seldom outlive you.
Dogs can't talk.
Dogs enjoy petting in public.
You never have to wait for a dog—they're ready to go 24-hours a day.
Dogs find you amusing when you're drunk.
Dogs like to go hunting.
Another man will seldom steal your dog.
If you bring another dog home, your dog will happily play with both of you.
A dog will not wake you up at night to ask, "If I died would you get another dog?"
If you pretend to be blind, your dog can stay in your hotel room for free.
If a dog has babies, you can put an ad in the paper and give them away.
A dog will let you put a studded collar on it without calling you a pervert.
A dog won't hold out on you to get a new car.
If a dog smells another dog on you, they don't get mad, they just think it's interesting.
On a car trip, your dog never insists on running the heater.
Dogs don't let magazine articles guide their lives.
Dogs like to ride in the back of a pickup truck.
Dogs are not allowed in Bloomingdale's or Neiman-Marcus.
If a dog leaves, it won't take half your stuff.

Hi there. Besides that hydeous slime, there is the smell issue. I don't know about anyone else, but I'll stick to cats as pet. Cats are cleaner. And they mind their own bussines. They are also very quiet and relaxed, and they don't lick, wich I find to be an essential trait of personality. Off course, it is a matter of personal preferences. Someone said something about pitbulls, wich are among the slimest ones. Sorry, but it is cats forever here. As for the "heterosexual" comment, no comments. If there's anything I don't like more than dogs, that'll be homofobics. My girlfriend says that I'm very much like a cat, silent, clean and relaxed. I don't sleep that much though...

Yes, cats have a clear tendency to run for their lives. I think it is a very funny thing to watch. I mean, there is that lazy creature, always having the time of his / her life laying on a pillow, or all over anything you own (like very important documents, clothes, or even people). Suddenly, something is much to loud, and the next second, they are gone. Sometimes I try to guess what do they think under stressfull circumstances. "¡Oh no! ¡My life! ¡See you!"

My cat loves chocolate. And regarding food, she became a criminal, always waiting for us to feed her. When ignored (ussually, she cries and puts a very painfull expresion, like she were abandoned or something), she uses one paw to grab us by the leg or the arm. Sometimes, she bit us (not too hard, just a tiny bite on the leg) and uses both front legs to catch us and let us know she's really hungry...

Cats are better at stealing prog. They sneak silently into the shop, snatch the album they want and silently sneak out again. A dog comes in, breaks into an excited bark for finding the album it wants to steal and gets caught before it even finds its senses again to snatch it and run away.

Cats are so much smarter than dogs.
When I first got mine, I thought it was a girl so I named it Caty. Well, it turns out "she" was a "he", but I still kept the name since I was use to it. Now though, I think he's figuring out that his name is actually for a girl. Just the other day when I called to him, he gave me a look like no other...

Almost the only time my cat has showed any real reaction to the music I have played was when I put the vinyl version of II by Led Zeppelin on. First he jumped on the plastic lid of the record player, making it play the same track over and over. After I had tried to put the same record on again, he pressed a button from my stereo and switched the radio on, instead of the record!
When I bought Secret Language of Birds by Ian Anderson it was fun to watch my cat getting interested, because the album starts with a sound effect of a bird singing. My cat tried to locate the imaginary bird around the room and finally focused on the loudspeaker and even peeked behind it until he understood he was being fooled! Won't get fooled again, though.
The strangest thing about the subject of my cat and music is that he seems to enjoy it when I play my guitar. He usually comes to sit beside me and sometimes even quietly purrs when I play my Fender. I'm also often amazed by how loud I can play my CD's without him being much bothered. Play any CD as loud as you can tolerate and he just sleeps, but take one step into the direction of the fridge and he's wide awake in a split of a second!
In fact his optimism is infinite: any time I walk towards the kitchen he's sure I do it only in order to give him more food, no matter how much he already has on his plate.
If his meal is "late" in his opinion or something else makes him annoyed, he has a delicate way of showing his dissatisfaction by biting my legs. Cats... the most self centered creatures on planet Earth - and that's why we like them so much!

My cat actually likes when I play prog in my room. He likes all types of
music. It's pretty funny though because whenever a strange part comes up
or an odd meter his head always comes up and he looks confused.

Sorry to be the one pointing out this for you: your cat is smarter. You think he's useless, but he won't work for free. In fact, you'll never get him to work. On the other hand, your dog will do everything you ask. You might think that this is a sign of how smart the dog is. My cat knows how to open doors, windows, she also knows wich side of the bed is warmer, she knows how to make me open the closet door for her, so she can climb and sleep in a warmer place. Cats learn on their own how to do things that are usefull for them.

My gorgeous little cat just watched the whole of my special prog dvd with me. She lies beside me and purrs whenever Curved Air come on. So what can I say?

Cats Rule! They are rebels, they do what they want, they don't care what you think, they do things they like when they like it. They remind me of certain musicians of the prog persuasion.
Now, dogs do what they are told when they are told, just to please their masters, sort of like pop artists!

Your cat doesn't like digital. Put him a vynil, and you'll see.

Yes, but many were slaughtered during the middle age with sorcery's hunting, especially the black ones.
And many are still today in Asia, -along with other animals-, to eat them and get their skin, in a very cruel way.

Still the same ones since they are not yet over their ninth live
Actually the cats allow you into their lives, not the opposite as the human thinks.

I can't remember the website, but there is a trend to breed kitties inside glass boxes for them to take the shape of the box, extremely sick and disturbing thing to do.
