Subject: 25 Acts' Album Trios From Prog Archives Chart

I have done something very similar before. This is taken from Prog Archive's all-time top 250 chart including Proto-Prog and Prog Related. I only included acts with at least three albums in the top 250, I only included the top three ranked albums from each act, and it is ordered in the poll by where the first album by an act falls in the chart, and those acts' three albums are ordered by their ranking.

https://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=12&ssubgenres=37&ssubgenres=38&ssubgenres=3&ssubgenres=42&ssubgenres=44&ssubgenres=41&ssubgenres=35&ssubgenres=30&ssubgenres=17&ssubgenres=18&ssubgenres=32&ssubgenres=6&ssubgenres=33&ssubgenres=19&ssubgenres=15&ssubgenres=36&ssubgenres=28&ssubgenres=4&ssubgenres=43&ssubgenres=29&ssubgenres=11&syears=&scountries=&sminratings=1&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=1&smaxresults=250&x=62&y=13#list" rel="nofollow - Here is the chart for reference (CLICK)

Various of my favourite acts that I had hoped to include only had two albums in the top 250, and many others only had one.

-------------------------------------------------

Vote for the trio of albums where you like all three albums that comes closest to your top three of a band/artist from an act, or just vote for your favourite trio of albums. If it differs from your top three, please specify what you would have gone with. No multiple choice, please vote for one trio you appreciate but mention as many as you like on the list and as many variations as you wish.

--------------------------------------------------

Just thinking studio albums here:

With quite a few of my favourite acts here, this would not be my perfect trio of studio albums. For instance, while I really like that VdGG trio, I would rather have The Least We Can do than Godbluff. With Genesis, my favourites are The Lamb and Trespass. With KC I would want Lizard. With Pink Floyd I would want Meddle in my top three at least.. With Magma, I would want Kobaia (my fave) and 1001 Degrees there. With Miles Davis, I would replace Kind of Blue with Big Fun. With Gentle Giant, I would replace those three with the first three albums (I adore Acquiring the taste and Three Friends and really like the debut). With Jethro Tull I would rather have Stand up than Songs From the Wood.

Camel's is the perfect trio for me from that act, and so is BdMS, PFM, Caravan, Zappa's is good, so is SBB, so IS Rush... And also Cardiacs.

As an act where not only are those my top three studio albums but I have been most likely to play regularly over recent years, I heart Cardiacs the most here and give that trio of album my vote.

ELP in a landslide for me...but that's just me...

I would have included Triumvirat: Illusions on a Double Dimple, Spartacus, Old Loves Die Hard

VdGG, BdMS and PFM are the only bands/artists where the top trio of albums are my actual trio of favorites from the band. A top five would be like:

VdGG: Godbluff, Pawn Hearts, H to He
King Crimson: ItCotCK, Red, LTiA
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew
BdMS: Darwin!, Io Sono Nato Libero, BdMS
PFM: Per un Amico, Storia di un Minuto, L'isola di Niente

If this was about my tastes and not using the chart, then the choices would look very different on the whole. All of these have at least three albums in the PA top 250 all-time, all genres chart, and interestingly, perhaps, Triumvirat has none there.

I would want the usual suspects from me such as albums by Art Zoyd, Swans, Can, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Radiohead, Univers Zero, Dead Can Dance, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, David Bowie, Herbie Hancock, Henry Cow, AD II, Soft Machine, Anna von Hausswolff, Kate Bush etc.

Thanks for clarifying. I should quit just skimming your text LOL, and I like you list of "the usual suspects"...keep up the great polls...

Yes. It is my favorite band. Genesis, ELP, Rush, Miles, Gentle Giant, Camel and Steven Wilson are all favorites of mine.

I agree with you on Gentle Giant, Logan. Three Friends, Acquiring the Taste and Free Hand would be my choices in their discography. Three Friends is in my all-time Top 10 albums. Nothing wrong with the GG albums selected, because they are great too.

I would have included Mahavisnu Orchestra. Birds of Fire, The Inner Mounting Flame and The Lost Trident Sessions.

Gentle Giant: In a Glass House, Octopus, TPatG

Cardiacs just ahead of many others between which I'd have a hard time to differentiate. KC's Discipline era trilogy, Talk Talk's last three, and Swans starting from The Seer are probably my favourite trios.

That trio from Magma includes my three favorite albums from that band's amazing discography. Hard to top Yes' trio but, for me, at this time in my life, it does.

I've spent too much time thinking about this, but I ended up voting Caravan. The VDGG and PFM are just as strong for me. The next three are Rush, KC and Zappa. And honestly I could have voted for any of those six.

1) PFM
2) Pink Floyd
3) Yes
4) Beatles
5) Rush
6) ELP
7) Steven Wilson
8) Genesis
9) Gentle Giant
X) Camel

Factoring in importance as well as how much of the best music is on those 3 albums. For PFM 90% at least is on those 3 albums and then they dropped off the cliff for me. I could easily have gone for Floyd but there is the Wall. Yes have another 3 albums that are brilliant but those are the correct 3 for me. ELP's signature track is on Tarkus. Rush have a lot of great albums and I would swap out Hemispheres for Permanent Waves personally. For Genesis I would swap out SEBTP for Lamb or Trick easily. For Gentle Giant it's 3 from any 7 and Camel have Nude and a number of excellent late career albums although those 3 are about bang on to be fair.

That last comment got me thinking, because I don't feel like Anekdoten and Porcupine Tree get the attention they used to on here. Which is fine, but man it would be fun just going with random trios. Or one per sub-genre. Lots of ways to go, and I appreciate your polls Greg, they always make me think too hard. My brain needs the workout. I just like this idea of trios or doubles.

Yes with Genesis a close second. Personally, I would rate Present's High Infidelity, Barbaro (Ma non troppo), and This is NOT the end higher than Yes and Genesis and all those others in the list. Also Far Corner's three albums and Henry Cow's last three would be worthy mentions. The trouble with roof shingles is that they taste like hamburgers and smell like washing machine agitators.

If Marillion had Brave instead of Script…
If Pink Floyd had The Wall instead of Animals….
If Dream Theater had When Dream And Day Unite instead of Six Degrees…..

Henry Cow with Leg End, Unrest and Western Culture would be awesome for me (I like the others too, but those are my faves). Univers Zero with the first three is a superb trio for me.

I was planning to do a doubles next, in which case Porcupine Tree has two albums in the top 100 with Fear of a Blank Planet (66) and Fear of a Blank Planet (81). I was expecting PT to have three albums in the 250. And I was surprised to see that Anekdoten only has one in the top 250 with Until All the Ghosts Are Gone at 214.

So many ways to go, so many variations, and one fun thing is that depending on how you set up the parameters for the poll, even when using the charts you can hit on albums you want to focus on. I might do a top ten and list topic where we choose three albums from say 10 of our favourite bands. But such limits can feel too painful.

I have liked all the albums that you mentioned. It should give that last Present album another spin. The first two Present albums have been the most been meaningful to me and I would add Barbaro to that. And I like No. 6 a lot.

Univers Zero and Preent have put out amazing albums across the decades.

The chamber rock RIO band I have fanboyed over the most is Art Zoyd. I might go for just three with: Génération sans futur, Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer and Faust.

----------------------

For so many of my favourite bands I would really much prefer to talk about a top four or more than limiting to three, which is not surprising. Lewian mentioned Swans, and I would want to do at least three from the classic era (80s-90s) and at least three from the modern era (2010 up). I love, say, The Seer, To be Kind, The Glowing Man, and The Beggar, but I also love Children of God, White Light, The Great Annihilator and Soundtracks for the Blind.

My vote goes to VdGG: Godbluff, Pawn Hearts, H to He, although I would have replaced Godbluff with The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other for the perfect trio.

The only other trio of albums that I love is Yes: CttE, Fragile, Relayer. In the case of Genesis: SEbtP, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme and Pink Floyd: WYWH, TDSotM, Animals, I like all three albums but do not necessarily love all three. In the case of Cardiacs: Sing to God, A Little Man, On Land and in the Sea, I'm not sufficiently familiar with A Little Man And A House And The Whole World Window, though it does seem like an album I could like a lot.

There are a number of cases (which I won't name) where I only know or like two of the three albums listed.

My ideal trio, too, from VdGG would be, in chronological order, The Least We Can Do..., H to He and Pawn Hearts (I really love all three of those albums).

ELP by some margin but noting the discussion about the absence of Henry Cow above (both bands worlds apart in so many ways yet brilliant).  Readers will note that John Greaves did have albums released with the revived Manticore label to form a rather tenuous link between these two great bands....
