I did a pretty random poll covering an album from each year for 1968 to 1992 and another rather less random poll from 1993 to 2017, and this time I have done a randomish one, still pretty arbitrary, but less random on the whole, that covers 25 years from 1967 to now. I wanted to ensure that I covered 2018 until now. These are all faves of mine and this is typical "me" fare.

Vote for up to five of these albums that are known and liked (or more if one really wants to) and please comment on your selections. As this is representative of my tastes, I would expect various people at PA to not know lots here and for it not to be their cups of tea (or mostly their kind of cha-cha-cha).

This is so packed with actually lifechanging albums I don't know what to do:

Could very well be my top six in all of prog (not certain about the order):

Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (1974)
Magma - Kobaia (1970)
Univers Zéro - Univers Zero (1313) (1977)
Art Zoyd - Génération sans Futur (1980)
Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (1985)
Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (1971)

May be within my top 20-25:

Dead Can Dance - Within the Realm of a Dying Sun (1987)
Cos - Viva Boma (1976)
Black Midi - Hellfire (2022)

Quite possibly in my top 100:

Swans - The Beggar (2023)
Stereolab - Dots and Loops (1997)
East of Eden - Mercator Projected (1969)
Pink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967)
Dom - Edge of Time (1972)

Not far behind those:

Anna von Hausswolff - Dead Magic (2018)
The Smile - Wall of Eyes (2024)
Franco Battiato - Sulle corde di Aries (1973)
Motorpsycho - The Crucible (2019)
The United States of America - self-titled (1968)

Haven't actually heard:

JG Thirlwell & Simon Steensland - Oscillospira (2020)
Coil - The Ape of Naples (2005)
Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld (2004)
Hesse Kassel - La Brea (2025)

I guess I just don't really get it:

For such a mighty posting as the following, I want to quote it all.

Cardiacs - Sing to God (1996)

Maybe one day you'll be ready for Singin' to God. (meant a little humorously)

Mentioned that and this before, David Minnick (aka The 180 Gs) also has done Captain Beefheart and the full The Residents' Commercial Album, which is "worthy of laudation" in my books.

EDIT: That The 180's entertains me, but never found anyone else here who likes it. Love this cover that is on the https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9XazwJoSRd488ntgQjJwwORA690ro7CY" rel="nofollow - Tim Smith Leader of the Starry Skies tribute album along with groups/artists like Knifeworld, Steven Wilson, north Sea Radio Orxhestra, Oceansize (which I mention just in case it's of interest to anyone that does not know):

"Dirty Boy" is one of my very favourite songs even if the lyrics are pretty yuck and is what got me into Cardiacs. "Fairy Mary Mag" and "Foundling" were other love at first listen ones for me, but Cardiacs can be too abrasive for me even if I hold the band in high regard. I do prefer gentler music commonly, but the band has real beauty, and a kind of fragility that appeals to me, to music it has made.. Obviously, to each their own tastes. No shortage of great for ones tastes music to explore.

I seem to be the first person to vote for Black Midi - Hellfire which is weird given they were supposed to be ''God's gift'' to 21st century music Wink

Also voted for VDGG, Kate Bush, Robert Wyatt and Cardiacs.
