^ The two of those I don't know are the Procession and De De Lind albums.

Off the top of my head, some of my favourite 70s albums from Italy included in PA are:

Franco Leprino - Integrati ... Disintegrati
Franco Battiato - Sulle corde di Aries
Picchio dal Pozzo - Picchio dal Pozzo
Area - Caution Radiation Area
Pierrot Lunaire - Gudrun
Dedalus - Dedalus
Goblin - Profondo rosso
Fabio Frizzi - L'adila

Some of those get much more appreciation than others from others, but all are greatly appreciated by me.

Hi,

Goodness Ian ... you're only missing BANCO. Excellent list you put together though!

I would have added ANGE as well, but at the time, they were very theatrical in their work, and I think it kinda throws progressive listeners off some. But their stuff was really beautiful, and worth having for their first 7 or 8 years ... and a must have ... the live album TOME VI.

^ I hope you don't mind me going ahead with my German albums, David, having already done a shorter list of Italian ones. It is nice to have that structure also to make it easier commenting on each other's lists. Took me some time to prepare, but I'd rather it be removed than interrupt or make worse the flow of the thread or just not be appreciated.

France was my favourite country for years for music and so this list of some of my favourites is quite long. It's still missing so many I like. I adore Eskaton, which was recorded in 1978, so if that counts as a 1979 release, then that would be one of my very favourites from this long list. And only doing one per artist/ act.

Magma - Kobaïa (1970)
Serge Gainsbourg - Histoire de Melody Nelson (1971) not in PA, but I think this album should be, could go under Vannier perhaps as he was arranger
Igor Wakhévitch - Docteur Faust (1971)
Komintern - Le bal du rat mort (1971)
Jean-claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches (1972)
Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes - Paix (1972)
Alain Goraguer - La planète sauvage (1973)
William Sheller - Lux Aeterna (1972)
Alain Goraguer - La planète sauvage (1973)
Gong - You (1974) (Gong formed in France)
Janko Nilovic - Rythmes contemporains (1974) album recorded in France with Franch musicians, not in PA, but JRF worthy
Zao - Osiris (1974)
Wapassou - Wapassou (1974)
Cortex - Troupean Bleu (1975)
Jean-Philippe Goude & Olivier Colé - Jeunes années (1975)
Besombes-Rizet - Pôle (1975)
Clearlight - Clearlight Symphony (1975)
Zanov - Green Ray (1976)
Pascal Duffard - Dieu est Fou (1976)
Teddy Lasry - E = MC² (1976)
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygène (1976)
Yochk'o Seffer - Neffesh Music: Délire (1976)
Carpe Diem - En regardant passer le temps (1976)
Plat du Jour - Plat du Jour (1977)
Archaïa - Archaïa (1977)
Space Art - Trip in the Center Head (1977)
Tim Blake - Crystal Machine (1977)
Andre Fertier's Clivage - Mixtus Orbis (1978)
Ose - Adonia (1978)
Rialzu - Rialzu (1978)
Richard Pinhas - Chronolyse (1978)
Weidorje - Weidorje (1978)
Jean-Pierre Alarcen - Jean-Pierre Alarcen (1978)
* Eskaton - 4 Visions (1979, if it counts)
Art Zoyd - Musique pour l’Odyssée (1979)
Heldon - Stand By (1979)
Vortex - Les cycles de Thanatos (1979)
Rahmann - Rahmann (1979)
Ma Banlieue Flasque - Ma Banlieue Flasque (1979)
Laurent Thibault - Mais on ne peut pas rêver tout le temps (1979)

Yes, recorded in 1978, but not released until 1981 so whether it counts as a '70s album, it's a matter of choice - but definitely much appreciated. Wink

I had thought when you wrote "Eskaton   4 Visions   (1979, 1981)" that it might had an initial limited release of 1979. I'm fine with thinking of it as a 70s album due to the recording date, by the way. I generally am more interested in recording date than released date with archival releases, such as recorded in 1968, released in 2015.

Actually, there're a couple of very significant differences in the OPs, Drew, and so will it be further on compared to some of my previous threads - I don't like to repeat myself, either. Anyway, it's everybody's own choice to what degree follow my listing - I actually haven't asked for any this time - and there'll surely be some decisions to make. Smile

I don't know the story, but it's a pity. Some good contribution and it was interesting with genuine "new" blood and sometimes more-edgy posts - not that I've seen all of them.

Bruford Freak- You listed PFM's L'Isola Dinente twice. Did you mean for Storia Di Un Minuto to be on there somewhere?

Btw, that's quite understandable, as those two albums are more of my personal favourites than generally much appreciated, but I've removed them now from my list to make it more stricktly in line with my OP.

^ I didn't know Atila, it's really good!

I'll balance the list with more Portuguese Prog, in order of preference:
Quarteto 1111 - Onde Quando Como Porquê Cantamos Pessoas Vivas (1975)
Banda do Casaco - Hoje Há Conquilhas Amanhã Não Sabemos (1977)
Jorge Palma - Com uma Viagem na Palma da Mão (1975)
Petrus Castrus - Ascensão e Queda (1978)
Ananga Ranga - Regresso às Origens (1979)

I rediscovered Area thanks to the Italian lists, I like it very much now. I wasn't ready for it when I started listening to RPI. The same for Banco, my appreciation for their music grew in the past year.

And here's my Italian top 10, one album per artist. It can change in a few weeks, I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Maxophone - Maxophone (1975)
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Darwin (1972)
Locanda delle Fate - Forse le Lucciole Non Si Amano Più (1977)
Quella Vecchia Locanda - Quella Vecchia Locanda (1972)
Le Orme - Florian (1979)
New Trolls - Concerto Grosso (1971)
Jumbo - Vietato ai Minori di 19 Anni (1973)

Peoples responses confused me a bit at first....I gave early on a list of Italian artists which is what you asked for at first, then people gave other areas either in a bunch or just one area...so didn't know when I should have posted my German artists but finally did as they are so close to my heart....

I quite enjoy the first two Supersister albums (Present From Nancy, To The Highest Bidder).   What's not to love about a Canterbury Scene band from The Hague?

A lot of good recommendations in this thread, a few I have listened to , mainly German bands, but not Italian ones[ except for couple of PFM's works]. Whilst Can and Faust are mentioned [I would personally put in Faust IV over So Far though I like both of them very much],Kraftwerk seems to be missing. Their albums like 'Computerworld' like landmarks though I am not sure if they are even rock or proper electronic at this point.

Edit: I listened to Quella Vecchia Locanda's first effort and was surprisingly pleased. I won't say it was as good as PFM's peak but good enough to add to one's collection for regular listening.I scoured "All Music" for this LP and it states one of the genre as Western European Traditions though it doesn't sadly define the genre. I always linked it with some sort of classical listening and assumed the band was more mixing different instruments and creating good old prog sound reminiscent of so many bands

Not exactly my personal cup of tea, but in general these two albums are probably some of the most appreciated Dutch Prog albums.
