Topic: 2007 Album Releases

Subject: 2007 Album Releases

This poll comes in three sections and an "other" (see details on when to use), and multiple voting is not enabled. One can list all of ones favourites anyway and I do not treat such polls as contests.

The first eight are taken from the unfiltered, except by year, Prog Archives Top Album Chart for 2007. The second eight is taken from the top ten listed albums of the 2007 Collab Album of the Year topic. I don't wish to duplicate albums across sections. The third eight is from my top eight Awesome Prog for 2007 list.

"Other" as a voting option is intended to use if you don't like any of the listed options. That said, I would ask people to mention their favourites both on and off the list. If, for instance, your favourite in the poll is Rush's Snakes & Arrows, but your actual favourite from 2007 is Boyz N Da Hood's Back Up n da Chevy, then I request voting for and mentioning Rush's album in a post while also mentioning Boyz N Da Hood's as being your actual favourite album of 2007.

So I would like to hear about what people like both on AND off the list if applicable and, to reiterate, for the "other" voting poll option only to be used if nothing is liked that is already listed. Again, mention as many of your favourites as you like, both and off the list. And feel free to mention what you don't like that is listed too, and then preferably why it does not appeal. If one would be so kind, please mention your vote, mention if you can't or won't vote for any of the listed options (reason), and mention other likes if applicable. Thanks. :)

I said before that I don't usually vote in my own polls, my number one is obvious anyway, but I think I am going to vote again, so here's my vote for the great William D. Drake's Briny Hooves.    Love him.

Arrogance has to do with having a high opinion of ones self. This is an opinion, which I am entitled to, of someone else.

Sorry, this could be so much better expressed... Whether Hiromi is more talented than the others, let alone all of the others in the poll combined I wouldn't really even want to touch (if one did I would I would want to know how it is proven/ demonstrated), but I feel confident saying that she is very talented indeed and has talents that are uniquely hers. I also am confident that others here are more talented in some ways than her. Viva la difference. It's not a contest and I would not expect all to be really well-known here so such a judgment I cannot take terribly seriously. As a children' singer who I took my kids to see multiple times would warble, "Everybody's special in their own special way." Hiromi is more special in her own special way than most, and than any other, and is quite incredible from what I know of her (I should know her work better than I do).

In Rainbows is a tough one to beat. Far and away the most artistic and original offering of the time.   Yes, Hiromi is extremely talented in a technical sense. But I just didn’t feel it the way I did with Radiohead or even P-Tree, which was pretty fantastic also.

I might add that In Rainbows is a very odd record , not Prog, and not for everybody, but I just love it. If I were a Prog purist it would surely be porcupine trees 2007 album. IMO FOABB Created a NEW BLUEPRINT for Progressive Rock that has been used quite a bit by many bands since. Unfortunately becoming tiresome 20 years later now.

Probably no surprise based on how I've voted in other polls, Phideaux's Doomsday Afternoon is the winner for me here. One of my all time favourite albums and I have to listen to the whole thing the whole way through at least a couple times a year still.

Gazpacho's Night is my second choice from this list, I also listen through the full thing with some regularity.

Porcupine Tree's release this year was also very good, as was Aranis II (Maaaaaaybe my favourite by them but all of their albums are excellent) and Battles.

Other favourites from this year:
Blonde Redhead - 23
Cheer-Accident - Introducing Lemon
Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity (my favourite by them)
Giraffes? Giraffes! - More Skin With Milk-Mouth
Joanna Newsom - and the Ys Street Band
Marnie Stern - In Advance of the Broken Arm
Merlin Bird - Reason and Rhyme
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - In Glorious Times

I have liked Colors too. Did you vote for your second favourite, Neal Morse, or other? I see two other votes and one for Neal Morse, and "other" in case it's not clear is only meant to be voted for if one likes nothing that is listed. I have two more to go and just want to make sure that I'm phrasing it in a clear, understandable way. One person at PA told me that he barely understood a word I say. I think the problem was more the way I string together words than the words I use. I can be very upset with myself If I feel unable to communicate my ideas clearly. Some of my posts can come out very garbled, happens to me when speaking too now, and I am prone to typos despite having spent many years as a copy-editor.

No worries, and easy to miss things if one is at all distracted. I expect that you, like me, are often multi-tasking. When you write as much as I do I think the automatic reaction, and a very sensible one at that, would be TL;DR. The posts matter more to me than the votes themselves anyway. I see the poll as something of an accessory to potential discussion. I prefer not to vote other if I like something in a poll, and mention what I like both on and off the poll, and I know some others are very like-minded. It feels more like a communal sharing experience somehow to me when going with a listed option. "Other" is not so "belonging". I'm a loner who longs for a sense of community. I like to do things my own way, and I like to participate and involve myself in how others like to do things. I'd kind of like to be part of a cult, but I am quite individualistic and reasonably sceptical.

I wanted to mention something related in addition to my response to wiz_d_kidd, which ultimately may be more of a linguistics difference between us than a philosophical and logic one.   One can take things far too literally.   I agree that Hiromi is very technically talented, at least on the piano (I don't know how good a multi-instrumentalist she is and I don't know her music as well as I think I should) but there are so many factors to consider including of course composition, ability with various instruments, versatility/ range, creativity, innovation, experimentation... Appreciation is subjective, and I wonder how well-known all of these acts are to form and hold such an opinion. William D Drake may not be as technical on the piano/keyboards, but the music moves me. By the way, I commonly favour atmosphere (the right kinds) over virtuosity. One can find talent in technical showmanship and in creating moods and aural spaces and some don't seem to appreciate as much subtlety and nuance as others.

I really like that Radiohead, and it is one I should return to (got it at the time of release). Putting it on now. I did put it on again not too long ago, but not in a setting without distractions and not a proper play through. My current Radiohead faves are OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac and A Moon Shaped Pool. I like music off every Radiohead album.

*some time passes*

SO I have been been listening to In Rainbows and still am and I am reminded of just how very good it is. I got that album on release but it wasn't for some years that Radiohead really connected with me (not until a Moon Shaped Pool was released, and then funnily enough hearing Radiohead used in Westworld and its Spectre (which i wish had been used for Bond). Now it is one of my favourite bands and I still have space for that appreciation to deepen, like it is right now listening to In Rainbows again. :)

I made a Radiohead playlist some time back for a topic which did get me revisiting the albums.

This looks more like a laundry room in my opinion, note the washed out colours. I put it on the cycle for whites only, and not because I'm a racist.

Battles! Surprised I'm the first to vote for it, it's outstanding. I also love Briny Hooves, A Time of Day, Comicopera. Not so keen on In Rainbows and Fear of a Blank Planet as much as I like these bands.
