Subject: 2009 Album Releases
Date Posted: February 17 2025 at 08:12
I did prepare this the other day, Been sick, getting slowly better, can't focus well on TV despite watching My Kitchen Rules Australia, little to do. Today will be a full day out with taking my son to a robotics tournament.

2009 is very good year for Progressive Rock and is an unusual year in that I know and and rate highly three of the top four albums. Magma's was my album of the year for 2009 in 2009. And that Present might have been my number two (I could look that up but I like to make lists fresher and I got to know so much since then and got into different music avenues, especially as I got more into Indie and related music over the past years.. Just a few more years of the polls with Collab lists. I have done lists at Awesome Prog going back to the early 90s, and would like to see more ways of us sharing and comparing our lists although there have been many such topics on that. Mira did an excellent related series. To me there is something almost therapeutic about list-making, learn about music from others lists, and it can increase my passion for music.

This poll comes in three sections and an "other" (see details on when to use), and multiple voting is not enabled. One can list all ones faves anyway and I do no treat such poll as contests. I feel like societies emphasise and facilitate competition (and winning) too much commonly and cooperation (and caring and sharing) often not enough. There is my not deep thought of the day.

The first eight are taken from the unfiltered, except by year, Prog Archives Top Album Chart for 2009. The second eight is taken from the top fourteen listed albums of the 2009 Collab Album of the Year topic. I don't wish to duplicate albums across sections. The third eight is from my top eleven Awesome Prog for 2009 list.

"Other" as a voting option is intended to use if you don't like any of the listed options. That said, I would ask people to mention their favourites both on and off the list. If, for instance, your favourite on the list is Magma's E-Re, but your actual favourite is Weezer's Raditude (Weezer is an in-joke with my eldest child and I. I have not heard the album), then I request voting for and mentioning Magma's album in a post while also mentioning Weezer's as being your actual favourite album of 2009.

So I would like to hear about what people like both on AND off the list if applicable and, to reiterate, for the "other" voting poll option only to be used if nothing is liked that is already listed. Again, mention as many of your favourites as you like, both and off the list. And feel free to mention what you don't like that is listed too, and then preferably why it does not appeal. Pleas mention your vote, mention if you can't vote (reason), and mention other likes if applicable. I am a details-oriented guy so don't worry about writing too much, as long as it is sufficiently relevant I guess. :)

Here is my top 20 at Awesome Prog, the order is not always that meaningful and some albums should be re-visited more than others to assess with current ears. I often favour that which is newer to me but this is real mix of stuff I liked at the time, much later and got to know throughout 2009 plus.

I only know a small number of these, from which I probably like Aranis most. I have a weak spot for The Whirlwind, I can hear so much joy in it that they had playing this.

The best albums i have from this year are non-prog. Knive by Svarte Greiner and Tyondai Braxton's Central Market beat all prog albums by some distance in my book.

Tortoise's  Beacons of Ancestorship and Buried Alone - Tales of Crushing Defeat by Knifeworld are two very good prog albums.

I voted for Ëmëhntëhtt-Ré and to be honest that is my favourite prog album of 2009... but since Animal Collective are included on Awesomeprog I feel compelled to put them on the number 1 spot in my list :P
I could see that Natural Snow Buildings album growing on me quite a bit but I feel like it warrants a more attentive listen from me first.

I'll vote for Present for this list. Lost of very close contenders, including Magma, Leprous, Mars Volta.

I have a distinct memory of listening to Present one of the first times sitting on my couch with my roommate and boss while we all-night-coded a game to be ready for release for the iPad launch. My boss looked at me like I was crazy when it came on and my roommate, who was used to my taste in music by then, just kind of rolled his eyes. A different time.

My actual favourite of the year is not in this poll though, it is Number Seven by Phideaux, I know they have been the top/near the top for a few years and this is the album that started all that. I doubt I rated it that highly back then, but over the years this has been such a sticker, I've probably listened to it more than any other from that year.

Destined Solitair (Beardfish) was probably the one I considered my top at the time and it's still in a very resilient #2 position, it was a very strange/elastic album but very good.

A few other good ones:
Alec K Redfearn and the Eyesores - The Blind Spot
Cheer-Accident - Fear Draws Misfortune
The Dear Hunter - Act III
Devin Townsend Project - Ki
Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
Fiery Furnaces - I'm Going Away
Gazpacho - Tick Tock
miRthkon - Vehicle
Secret Green - To Wake the King
Shadow Circus - Whispers and Screams
Simon Steensland - Fat Again
Wobber - Afterglow
Zu - Carboniferous

This was the first year I ever put in effort to exploring albums from a specific year, but because streaming wasn't a thing I hadn't yet hit the point of over-exploring. As a result I formed an attachment to quite a bit of music from this year, and I have a very soft spot for it. It was a very different time in my life that I enjoyed very much and I miss quite a bit, and thinking about the music brings back a lot of good feelings.

Ok, I bit, I made a list, but it doesn't seem to be updating the overall list. Do I need to copy it here? I'd rather not, seems like doing so would be taking over this thread about the poll more than I already did by bothering to drop a list of albums.

I've listened about ten albums from the list...

Miriodor  deserves  a vote.

I also love Riverside and Maudlin of the Well.

^ Love Avanti! Wonderful album. Was one of my two two albums of the year then and remains one of my favourite albums. Miriodor was the first contemporary "prog" band that I really got into (in 2004) as before that I was so 60s and 70s focused and Avanti! is my favourite Miriodor album. It's more accessible Miriodor actually, I find. I had hoped for that album to get some love in this topic.

I read this review at rateyourmusic of it which manages to pooh pooh Miriodor, Lynch and jazz.:

If the director David Lynch was a prog band, he would be Miriodor. Both are just as weird. And boring. And overrated. If you overwhelmingly like jazz, you'll have at least a chance to like Avanti!. I happen to hate jazz and that's why I can't stand Miriodor either. To my ears this is just clatter and rattle. And the saxophone sounds at times like a dying cat. Saxophone is the instrument that has done most harm to my prog albums...

I know who I would like to "lynch".

Ok, I bit, I made a list, but it doesn't seem to be updating the overall list. Do I need to copy it here? I'd rather not, seems like doing so would be taking over this thread about the poll more than I already did by bothering to drop a list of albums.

I should not speak for Mike, especially as I tend to get things wrong, but I think that if you are not registered logged in user (A guest) then you might more-so want to copy your list here. I'm happy to see people post as many lists as they like. Won't take away from the thread for me at all. I have dropped eight of my faves in the poll, my top 11 in the OP, and my exported top 20 from Awesome Prog. If you have an account at RYM and are logged-in, and stick with the same browser?, it should be fine for updating?

Never mind, kindly disregard/ignore, the Mike man has spoken.

Hi! You need to export the list to my https://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=134440" rel="nofollow - counting thread to link your AP account to your PA forum account. Smile

Just a note that my list includes Steven Wilson only because it's shown on Mike's AP site as a 2009 release but is apparently a 2008 release. (I don't track these things!)

I didn't see the "other" option on this poll until I had already clicked Magma, which is an amazing album. But my favorite all time studio album was released in 2009. https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=23455" rel="nofollow - Exivious' self-titled album will be hard to bump from the top. Still sitting in Tech/Extreme for some reason.

Corrected! You may want to adjust your 2008/2009 releases Smile

I'm currently cleaning up these issues, there's about 1500 releases in the AP database where the year differs between AP, PA and RYM. It's less than 2% of all the releases listed, and I'm fixing the higher profile releases first. I'll also announce the changes in the main thread in prog polls.

Regarding Insurgentes in particular: Here's the different release dates. Most releases where in 2009, but apparently two special editions were released in advance in November 2008. https://musicbrainz.org/release-group/b1c5ea39-8f96-355b-bfe4-84a7805db75f" rel="nofollow - https://musicbrainz.org/release-group/b1c5ea39-8f96-355b-bfe4-84a7805db75f

I am glad that you clicked on Magma. The other option is intended to be for those who like nothing in the poll. To vote for an album option if one likes any of them and then mention that as well as ones' actual favourite in a post. I definitely do appreciate people mentioning others. I do need to work on making clearer and more concise directions. Posting polls is an artform, and I do like to try different approaches. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I listened to and appreciated the video embed. :)
