Subject: 2017 Album Releases

I put this together quickly, brother-in-law's funeral today, not going, too far to fly when my wife and I both have respiratory ailments. A reminder to make the most of the time we have, which may or may not involve creating more polls...
Again this poll comes in three sections and an "other", and again multiple voting is not enabled.
The first eight are taken from the unfiltered, except by year, Prog Archives Top Album Chart for 2017. The second eight is taken from the Collab Album of the Year for 2017 topic, but if an album of that was already listed, then I omit it from that poll section. The third eight is from my top 20 list at Awesome Prog for 2017. "Other" as a voting option is intended to use if none of the listed options have much appeal. That said, I would ask people to mention their favourites on and off the list. If your favourite on the list is Agusa, but your actual favourite is Steven Wilson's To the Bone, then I suggest voting for and mentioning Agusa in a post while mentioning Wilson's album as being your actual favourite.
Sharing is caring and detailed posts are welcome (that can help with conversation). Mention as many of your favourites as you like, both and off the list. And feel free to mention what you don't like that is listed too.

Wobbler - From Silence to Somewhere (the actual number one, but not in this poll section as already listed) Accordo dei Contrari - Violato Intatto (the actual number two, but not in this poll section as already listed) 1. Big Big Train - Grimspound (Crossover) 2. Deluge - Grander Oceanarium (Symph) 3. Mike Oldfield - Return to Ommadawn (Crossover) 4. Thinking Plague - Hoping Against Hope (RIO/Avant Prog) 5. Agusa - Agusa (Psych/Space) 6. Jordsjø - Jord (Symph) 7. Roger Waters - Is This the Life We Really Want? (Crossover) 8. Bent Knee - Land Animal (Crossover)
https://awesomeprog.com/release-polls/ap/aoty-2017/vote" rel="nofollow - From My Top Nine at Awesome Prog (in somewhat haphazard order)
1. Richard Dawson - Peasant (in PA, Prog Folk) 2. Susanne Sundfør - Music for People in Trouble (in PA, Crossover) 3. James Holden & The Animal Spirits - The Animal Spirits (can't see in PA, Progressive Electronic) 4. Swans - Deliquescence (live, Post-Rock) 5. L'Rain - L'Rain (not in PA, Neo-Psych, Art Pop, Soul) 7. The Comet Is Coming - Death to the Planet EP (Nu Jazz, Jazz Fusion) 8. King Krule - The Ooz (not in PA, Art Rock)
2016 is a huge year for me, but I will take a break from these. Don't want to inundate PA with my topics.

...and he is relentlessly going on with the series, patience is for losers...
I go for Thinking Plague out of this bunch (still haven't listened to Deliquescence, stupid me). I do like Polygondwanaland, The Comet is Coming, and this year's Roger Waters album, even though I may be the only one.

Patience has never been a virtue of mine. Once I start something, no matter how pointless and mundane the exercise may prove to be, I like to finish it, but not at the expense of other people's efforts not getting attention.
"The Knot" off Deliquescence is especially epic.
That said, 1998's Swans Are Dead is my favourite Swans live album, but then I love Swans' late 80s through 90s period.
I have not heard the latest Live Rope (2024).

Wobbler
However, I adore BBT- "Grimspound", Obiymy Doschu "Son", "Pacifisticuffs" and Accordo dei Contrari - "Violato Intatto".

Pasticuffs edges out Land Animal and Peasant from this list. Looking at my library, a few that stand out that aren't in the list:
- Guerilla Toss - GT Ultra (you may like this one)
- Murder of the Universe was my favourite of the KG+TLW albums that year
- Lingua Ignota's All Bitches Die was pretty great
- Merkabah's Million Miles kicked ass
- I remember enjoying Mary Ocher's the West Agains the People, but haven't listened to it since then I don't think. But it may be up your alley
- St Vincent's Masseduction was fantastic
- Xanthochroid's of Earth and Axen II was a pretty great metal concept album.
- Zeal and Ardors debut was also pretty fantastic
But album of the year for me probably goes to the pretty straightforward emotive alternative rock, "Broken Machine" by Nothing but Thieves, this has been on constant play for me basically since then.
Sorry to hear about your brother in law. It's always sad to lose family.

So many releases I still need to listen to, it never ends
These are my current favorites of 2017. In this poll I'll vote for Polygondwanaland, although I prefer Murder of the Universe (also from 2017).
I really like The Source. I also love the Pain of Salvation album, there was a great synergy on that one between Gildenlöw and Ragnar Zolberg.

^ The music quits for nobody. The shows must go on.

Thanks, my wife has taken it very hard. He was the brother of hers I was closest to. We shared the same worldview. It's been a long series of illnesses, but he had heart surgery and other procedures and he had seemed to be improving. Always sad and also a fact of life. My wife's father was the same age in his 50s when he died. Since my wife has had heart attacks it's a reminder to be extra vigilant. She should leave her job -- far too stressful, and I should work harder (I do lack the same kind of earning potential).
I will check out Guerilla Toss. I have Lingua's Ignota's in my longer list. I have listened to that St. Vincent once just recently, but needs more spins. It's one I expect to list here after I spin it again. The order does not mean much as I should return to various of these.

I'm really sorry to hear about your Wife's brother. None of the men on my dad's side of the family have hit 60 that we know of until me. I feel it's coming though, I struggle physically. It's all good though. 2017 was a deep year for me, I am still reviewing cds I picked up back then. My top three... Violato Intatto From Silence To Somewhere Hoping Against Hope
And I did have a blast when I discovered King Gizzard. I probably over did it with these guys though and jumped off the bus pretty much after 2017. But Flying Microtonal Banana and Polygondwanaland still standout for me. Albums not listed that I like are quite a few. Psychedelic music from Atavismo, Nik Turner and Electric Moon. John Zorn and Mediabanda as well, for powerful jazz related music. Miriodor in Avant released an amazing record in Signal 9. Such a good year.

And one really random recommendation would be a NYC band called Ex-Eye. Includes a Secret Chiefs 3 member and is led by the sax player. Post metal that is both heavy and powerful.

Mike Oldfield
------------- Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Wasn't that the year of Believe's Seven Widows? I'm giving them my vote!
I was not really a fan of Mike Oldfield's Return to Ommadawn. Maybe I need to listen to it again, but... It felt like an unnecessary piece, paling before the original.

^ I appreciate that Mira. Thank you. Has been very hard on my wife but she seems to be coping well now. He was the brother of hers that she did not always get along well with but I enjoyed the company of the most as we shared such similar views on the world, politics, philosophy... Having been ill, but slowly improving (got hit with multiple COVIDs and Flus and my lungs and ability to think are paying the price) I did not attend much of the virtual service (could not travel to Asia for it), but it seemed a beautiful and very large gathering of people. We will travel there before too long, once my wife can get away from work and son is settled in university (he will be doing computer engineering, and has a passion for composing music which is awesome).

^ Sounds like you've been going through quite a rough patch, Greg! So sorry! I fear that expanded realization of our new Muskian Darktopia will only accelerate the tough times for many of us. We'll always have music (just as the nations under Soviet rule in the Cold War had jazz and jazz-rock fusion), but it may come to feel a bit hollow as the "good times" we've been so spoiled with come to an end.

^ Thanks. Ooh that dark and musky scent of the Elon dystopia (even dressing like a blackshirt). I know we are asked not to talk politics (never a policy I wanted, just seemed needed), but well, wow, just wow.

^ My condolences as well, really sorry for your loss. Only two weeks ago my mother had to be taken to the hospital, now she is back home with an oxygen pack. Nobody is getting younger, unfortunately ...
Regarding the dystopia, well, it seems like the less we (publicly) talk about politics, the faster our dear leaders behind the scenes can advance their agendas. Not saying that this forum is the best place to discuss these topics, but there seem to be fewer and fewer places overall.

Good year. I had to make some decisions on who to leave off my top 30.
Voted for Accordo Dei Contrari.

https://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=56953" rel="nofollow - Squintaloo - Über Bord Unfortunately the band did not get added to PA until a year after this album came out so didn't get any AOTY love. But this is easily my favorite album of 2017.
