2024 is mostly done - but 2025 is well underway!
Are you interested in new (prog) releases? Then voting in these monthly polls is a great way to keep up with what has been recently released. On the voting page at AP you can directly browse all the releases of the month. If you also rate your favorites and (optionally) assign a prog status, that will not only provide more data for all users to browse, but it will also set you up with a nice database of your favorite releases at the end of the year, when the Aoty voting will start.

Oh and I would have selected the Jonathan Hulten album Eyes Of The Living Night if that was an option so would have a top five with that No 1.

^ You can add missing albums yourself - it's quite easy, all it takes to add an artist is the name, and all it takes to add a release is the name, type and year of release.

^ Glad you like it! My hope is that we can "map out" the new releases of 2025 more effectively than last year. It already works pretty well with the 4-5 active users we have, but if a couple more participate, it will work even better. I have this theory that you don't need thousands of users (as there are at RYM) to discover most of the really awesome releases. Even with only a dozen users who regularly mark their favorite releases and at the same time use the lists to discover cool stuff they weren't aware of, this should be pretty effective.
And, at least for me, browsing the releases is always fun. As is the preparing part, which is a little more tedious (I'm semi-manually adding hundreds of releases each month), but still enjoyable.

I deleted the more recent entry. Please fix your lists and the data you had entered manually this time (those of you who had added the Motorpsycho release), next week I'll implement a merge functionality which will keep lists, ratings and tags intact when removing duplicates.

My 2025 thus far, and not given most of these enough spins for any kind of definitive order. Just heard that Niechec for the first time earlier today. This has been one of my favourite modern jazz-fusion meets post-rock bands since its self-titled in 2016.

I fixed the Moonshine Blast entry, which was released in December. I see you have given Drew a PA guest entry, but Valdez and sepia_blob View who have entries in this topic do not and looks like entries did not count. I recall that one is supposed to post in another topic for counting info to take effect.

In order to pick it up I have to browse these topics with my desktop browser for my browser plugin to find and register the lists. Will do so later, it should pick up Valdez’s lists. Sepia_blob will need to post it again, the counting info link is missing.

I listened to Huremic's Seeking Darkness earlier today. The artist form Seoul has another project called Parannoul which I was already familiar with which also has an album out this year. Rate Your Music describes Seeking Darkness as:

Hi,
As much as I like to listen to many of these things, I really dislike the numbers, and wish folks could list these without the numbers ... I have yet to think that any top listing by anyone is anywhere near my listening ... thing ... and I have a weird phobia about the album listed as #1 being above, or better than the album listed #15 ... for example ... yeah, yeah ... that Mosh again!

Each list indicates some level of individual appreciation for the albums that the listener has tried. The numbers in mine can be pretty arbitrary and very malleable. I have no issue with people ordering their favourites and if one does, then maybe ignore this topic and make one for alphabetical lists.
I suggest trying to ignore the topics that don't appeal, post in topic that do, or make your own. If you build it well, people are likely to come.

by the way, I have tried twice now to review that Hesse Kassel album without success (since I added it I rather feel that I should try to review) and ending up reviewing more Fishmans albums instead. I have yet to find an album I adore from this year. Part of it just depends on what particular things I am most into at a given time (it has been Sufjan Stevens and Fishmans that I have been into the most in recent times). And I have been listening to the newest Spellling, but have not heard it in full yet. Swans likely will rank high in my list with its newest Birthing, which comes out on May 30.

The numbers are not important. But yes, the lists are usually ranked, meaning that the releases at the top of the list are usually the most favorite releases. Do you not have favorite albums? We all have. Not everything we come across is equally good. It might seem unfair to the "less good" releases, but some are actually better than others. And with thousands of releases each year, it does help (me) to know which releases people prefer.
Having said that, I can implement a "numberless" export.

The intention is that the lists are ranked, but all of the releases listed should be at least "awesome" (the A-tier at AP), so the actual ranking is within the A/S tiers and only of minor importance. I simply try to put my absolute favorite releases in the top 10 ...

I knew it's a lauded album. I have listened to some of it, don't listen to much death/black metal. Right now I'm very into kinds of dreamy and floaty psychedelic infused music, Indie and folk, and electronica, although noisy and dissonant music still gets play. Now listening to the album with better equipment and it sounds more dynamic.

Do you not have favorite albums? We all have. Not everything we come across is equally good. It might seem unfair to the "less good" releases, but some are actually better than others. And with thousands of releases each year, it does help (me) to know which releases people prefer.

It's hard for me to look at something and think "favorite" since another album, 15 minutes later, changes the equation. The thought that scares me the most is how a "like" ends up being something that you like better than others within the music, and that kinda eats into the objectiveness of the listening and the listing.
After 3K+ LP's 10 years ago, and now 2K CD's and about 1K LP's ... the idea of favorites is more of a joke than it is some kind of meaningful thought about the music and its players. I don't sit here and mark Stravinsky, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, or Berlioz ... and they might show up depending on moods, I suppose, but in general I am emotional "neutral" when listening to music ... other than Space Ritual that I will blast out my neighbors when they play their mariachi on repeat 10 times daily at the same time! It usually gets the point across, and they can't argue with the power of a good and strong sound system!
I will say that I have some bands that I have a special heart and touch for, but that is not a comment on all the other music, or that they are better than everyone else and need to be "ranked" and "rated" ... so folks know that is a favorite.
I have 2K CD's and 1K LP's of favorites ... end of story! Why have them at all, if it doesn't matter? But I will not, for example, rank or rate an album I do not have or intend to get ... though I might comment on the fly, from what I heard, as has been the case with JMA that has examples, much better listed than how they are done here ... your ability to listen is much more detailed and you have a better idea of what you are going to listen to!
I often think that these lists will alienate a lot of folks that are not going to spend the time listening to 15 albums, and leave behind their favorites. Not sure that is a good way to attract new fans! (though I'll be darned if I have any idea what is!)

Personally I always look at the highest ranked albums on PA for the year so far and check those out. I will check out other albums of course but I'm pretty lazy when it comes donwn to it so happy for others to do the 'leg work'. yep ranking albums when you are comparing different genres (ie Hiromi ''jazz rock'' to say Dominic Sanderson ''eclectic'' and Fluctus Quadratum ''Symphonic'' etc) but I gues people can filter these down if they so choose. We could just call it all music but then I'm guessing there are 100's of albums released every month (all genres) so the number of days and hours in the day (deducting sleep time, work time ect) makes it impossible to listen to everything, hence why I look at rankings and ratings. If not then where else am I supposed to start from?

And I tend to use the rateyourmusic charts as a guide (it's not the only way I find music). And I like how customisable that is and the multi-genre tagging. I would not wish to limit myself to albums on this site, and do find albums worth suggesting to PA from those charts. Aside from that, I don't much care if the music is Prog or not. My favourites often change on a daily basis, or even depending on what I am listening to at the moment, but I often do settle on particular preferences within a set over time even if there remains a fair amount of interchangeability. The lists tell one something about my interests and hhavle led to excellent recommendations based on my tastes.
For 2025, I have Hesse Kassel - La Brea currently at one. I'm sure that will change. For 2024, I have Beth Gibbons' Lives Outgrown. For 2023, I have Swans' The Beggar. For 2022 I have Weyes Blood's And in the Darkness Hearts Aglow, for 2021 it's Lingua Ignota's Sinner Get Ready... It just says something about my interests. Looking at my top 10 would give a better idea. We all have preferences.
