Hello friends of Progarchives. I would like to add a new band. It is Malabriega, of which I leave you the biography (written by them) and the information about their first album (they will soon release a new album). It is an Andalusian rock group, in a similar vein to Triana.

Artist Name: Malabriega
Subgenre: Symphonic Prog
Album: Fiebre (2017)

Biography:

Malabriega is a band from Seville that mixes various styles such as rock, flamenco, jazz or progressive among others and that takes as a starting point the great Andalusian rock bands of yesteryear but goes much further in its journey.

In 2016 they released their first EP entitled La duda, composed of 4 songs that define the style of the band and which was very successful, allowing them to appear twice in the national magazine This Is Rock. The Italian magazine Prog Italia dedicated a space to them within the Spanish 'prog' groups to take into account and MariskalRock made a very favorable review of the album, also doing an interview with them. Finally, RTVE interviewed them for two of its channels: La 1 and Canal 24H.

In September 2017 they released their first LP entitled Fiebre, recorded and mixed by Jesús Chaves at Estudios Pelícano and Estudios Octopus. This LP is made up of 12 tracks (11 + 1 bonus track from their previous EP), where there is room for very modern sounds along with others that remind us of great bands. Listening to this album one finds the balance and fusion of the roots of flamenco with rock, prog and other genres in a unique way and with the strength and drive that characterizes them in their live performances. The release of this LP was followed with great interest by the press and radio, appearing in media such as Cadena Ser, El Diario de Andalucía, Viva Sevilla, Diario de Sevilla or El Correo TV.

Among others, they have played with Tabletom, Fausto Taranto, Randy López, Storm, Zaguán, El Tubo Elástico and Sweet Hole. Their songs are born from the fusion of knowledge and experiences of all their members, producing a magical union in which all styles converge towards something fresh and new but that sounds familiar.

Band:

Juan Castro (Vocals)
Joaquín Sainz (Electric Guitar)
Manuel Soto Noly (Spanish Guitar)
Sergio Carmona (Bass)
Raúl Gómez (Drums)

I've only listened once so far but I love this album already! I wouldn't say it's "prog" but the songwriting is top notch. The native Spanish lyrics add an extra dimension to it. I also really like the hand drawn "story book" styled cover art. May I ask who drew it?

EDIT:
NM. According to the liner notes, it's by Virginia Garcia Moreno

Man, I dig their art!

It kind of sounds like it could either go in Prog Folk or Crossover Prog. I'll bring it to the attention of Prog Folk Team first. Thanks for the suggestion.

I just posted my thoughts about this album here, but Ken had already beaten me to the line, so I removed them again lol!

Basically I said that I thought this music definitely merits inclusion on PA, though I wasn't personally hearing the Symphonic Prog nuances that characterised those first two Triana albums. To me it sounded like a mix of flamenco, various flavours of rock & classic rock, and prog - and to me that spelt Crossover Prog as far as this site is concerned.

I never considered Prog Folk to be honest, but it doesn't really matter which of the two subs that Ken mentioned the evaluation starts off in. It'll all come out in the wash eventually lol!

The other option I mentioned, if the second album is being released pretty soon, would be for us to wait and listen to that before deciding which team should start the evaluation off. Maybe the second album will have more of a Symphonic Prog sound to it.

However, we can always take that into consideration later, when the album eventually drops.

If the band is approved for inclusion here in one of the aforementioned subs, I assume that they would be willing for us to use the biography exactly as it is written above?

Thanks for your comments. The band's second album will contain some longer and more progressive songs. It can wait (Spoiler for Progarchives: In February I hope it will be available).

The biography will be valid! That "Fiebre" is a great album and I'm glad you liked it.

Greetings From Spain,
Javier
