An eclectic bundle of artists and albums where the only link is drum legend Bill Bruford. While Bill did play a couple months with National Health he was not on that album. Also, he was on some of the second Gordian Knot release. UK will probably get the most votes, so I'll choose Earthworks. |

It's an all-inclusive poll, meaning ABWH will be coming up in the 13th poll (if we get that far). On second thoughts though, you're right, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe should have been included in this first poll, so I just added them retroactively in place of Projekct One, who no one would've voted for anyway.

In the Court, albeit according to the Bruford's Bundle premise, the 1st album with Bill sitting in should take its place, namely Larks Tongues.

And one track from that tour (the Cinema show) features on 'Seconds out'.. his only (official) recording with the band.. there is also the Stafford Bingley Hall 1976 official film which features BB on all tracks. There was a series of these posh (and expensive.. at the time) promotional photos commissioned so i think there was a supposition that he might hang around a bit longer! It probably wasnt really his scene but the potential earnings were tempting? ------------- |

I can see your point, but on the other hand, I could hardly list Larks' Tongues in Aspic as being the first album by King Crimson. It's an all-inclusive poll, so I'll be including ALL of the albums by bands that Bruford has been involved with over the years, even if he doesn't appear on every album.

While I think it's fair enough to add an album like Itchycock as long as it's clear. I actually would not in the poll itself that ones that don't contain Bruford. Personally, I would rather just consider the albums that Bruford was involved with but I recognise that Paul likes to go broad and cover whole discographies starting from the beginning. One can always make ones own topics rather than complain about how others make them or critique them. Mind you, unless we try to actively support each others topics (to a reasonable extent) that might not make for a very good experience. Paul, noting those not containing Bruford would be helpful and more informative to me. I actually would rather not vote for the ones without Bruford, but to know all of those would take research on my behalf. You could even just pan an asterisk beside each one without Bruford and note in the OP that those are not Bruford-involved albums. When it comes to series like this, I do want to feel like I'm learning something from it. |

I don't think that it's a bad idea to tell one's thoughts about others' way of doing, as long as telling it in a considerate way, and by the way, when talking about a good experience, I definitely think that it's good to respect the OPs, or even that people ought to do it.

^ Paul, It's like something I sometimes do for ones that some might question as sufficiently relevant. ^^ David, I agree with you. Constructive criticism and cordially sharing one's concerns is good. I think. I think it's important to be able to take constructive criticism well, and I like having such discussions at the forum. It's when one gets lots of negativity and people making the same kind of criticism again and again that it can get me down. Move on. Many of those who will complain in various topics will not even back up their criticisms nor respond when one tries to explain one's thinking in my experience, and it can seem very snarky and petty. Often people, including myself, could be a lot more thoughtful, charitable and understanding. I think the OP makes the purpose clear enough (projects that include Bruford at some point), and now by highlighting the albums without Bruford it makes it clearer. Somehow I would still feel uncomfortable voting for a non-Bruford one although the only album I know and really like in this poll is In the Court. But if that is an issue, it is now easier to ignore the non-Bruford ones. Nothing wrong with voting for a non-Bruford one with how this is set up at all, just preference on my part (as well as my lack of knowledge). |

To be honest, I made a mistake including National Health and Pierre Moerlen's Gong here, because although Bill Bruford was an early member of both bands, he doesn't actually appear on any of their albums.

^Actually on National Health "Complete" Bill plays for 1:41 on the tune Paraclesus. Steve Hillage is on that song also.

I like his drumming on National Health Missing Pieces. There are in fact some unusual sounding pieces on this album and some reminiscent of King Crimson...including Phil Miller having similarities to Robert Fripp. Gong Live In Oslo 1974 features Bill Bruford on drums. I like his drumming on Sprinkling Of Clouds and he's great on the Daevid Allen material and the Fish Rising Steve Hillage material. This concert is a unique setting. It's Daevid Allen sounding different and heading in a new direction which was stylistically based on a more gentle style of writing he recorded a few months later on Good Morning...and Steve Hillage playing songs which surfaced on Fish Rising. There is also a strange instrumental improvisation which is in a King Crimson style...but it's Gong progressing forward with Hillage and Allen leaving to pursue solo albums and Bruford is backing this up with creative playing. It's a shame that it is an audience recording, but if you have an EQ it can sound decent. |
