Subject: A favoured album from each PA category

I like to get an idea of people's tastes across the board so to speak. Below I have a favourite album from each PA category (well, other than the subcategory for various artists, samplers). What matters is that the act is in that category at Prog Archives. For instance, I would not describe Duster as Neo-Prog; Neo-Psych, yes.

If coming up with your list, cover as many categories in PA as possible or as many as you want to, and please try to see which category those albums actually reside in at this site.

- Canterbury Scene: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (1974)
- Crossover Prog: Anna von Hausswolff - The Miraculous (2015)
- Eclectic Prog: Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (1971)
- Experimental/Post Metal: Boris - Flood (2000)
- Heavy Prog: Morte Macabre - Symphonic Holocaust (1998)
- Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: André Fertier's Clivage - Mixtus Orbis
- Jazz Rock/Fusion: Herbie Hancock - Crossings (1972)
- Krautrock: Dom - Edge of Time (1972)
- Neo-Prog: Duster - Duster (2019)
- Post-Rock/Math Rock: Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind (1996)
- Prog Folk: Spirogyra - Bells, Boots and Shambles (1973)
- Progressive Electronic: Franco Leprino - Integrati... Disintegrati (1977)
- Progressive Metal: Diablo Swing Orchestra - Sing-Along Songs for the Damned & Delirious (2009)
- Psychedelic/Space Rock: Message - From Books and Dreams (1973)
- RIO/Avant-Prog: Art Zoyd - Le mariage du ciel et de l'enfer (1985)
- Rock Progressivo Italiano: Area - Caution Radiation Area (1974)
- Symphonic Prog: Bo Hansson - Sagan Om Ringen (1970)
- Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Voivod - Nothingface (1989)
- Zeuhl: Magma - Kobaïa (1970)
- Various Genres/Artists: Concept/Themed; Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice - Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) Tributes; Leader of the Starry Skies: A Tribute to Tim Smith Vol. 1 (2010)
- Prog Related: David Bowie - Blackstar (2016)
- Proto-Prog: The United States of America - The United States of America (1968)

Note: I was thinking about having Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire de Melody Nelson for Prog Related, but he is not in. I remember adding him, but I see no record of ever having done do. Weird.

^ & ^^ thanks Alan and Steve.   In both of your lists, Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here is a long-time favourite, and from Steve's list I love Miles Davis' In a Silent Way. That's the album that got me into Miles Davis. And I have liked Argus from Alan's list a lot.

For most of these categories I could easily make many lists, but with Neo-Prog, Progressive Metal and Tech/Extreme Prog Metal my choices become more limited. That said, I do know and like multiple albums in every category at PA and plan to make at least one more. Really interesting to see people's choices from the categories they use as well as being interested in what categories they exclude.

Here is second list from me, opting not to duplicate any acts I already listed (otherwise Duster would be in here again). I could not decide on one for Tech/Extreme Prog Metal. Maybe someone would point me that way based on that they know of my tastes. The stuff I remembered liking from that category was not doing it for me when I recheck it. Experimental/Post metal is easily my favourite metal category in PA.

Canterbury Scene: Soft Machine - Third (1970)
Crossover Prog: Kate Bush - Hounds of Love (1985)
Eclectic Prog: Jean-Claude Vannier - L'enfant assassin des mouches (1972)
Experimental/Post Metal: Neurosis - Through Silver in Blood (1996)
Heavy Prog: Black Widow - Sacrifice (1970)
Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: Codona - Codona 3 (1983)
Jazz Rock/Fusion: Embryo - Embryo's Rache (1970)
Krautrock: Can - Ege Bamyasi (1972)
Neo-Prog: Marc Ceccotti - Sometimes Around Saturn (2008)
Post-Rock/Math Rock: Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000)
Prog Folk: Comus - First Utterance (1971)
Progressive Electronic: Anna Sjalv Tredje - Tussilago Fanfara (1977)
Progressive Metal: Thought Industry - Songs for Insects (1992)
Psychedelic/Space Rock: Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld (2004)
RIO/Avant-Prog: Cardiacs - On Land and in the Sea (1989)
Rock Progressivo Italiano: Franco Battiato - Sulle corde di Aries (1973)
Symphonic Prog: Aphrodite's Child - 666 (1972)
Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: unsure
Zeuhl: Eskaton - 4 visions (1981)
Various Artists Tributes: Hamtaï! Hommage à la musique de Christian Vander (2007)
Prog Related: Gerard Manset - La mort d'Orion (1970)
Proto-Prog: The Pretty Things - S.F. Sorrow (1968)

This might seem too challenging to some, but for any willing to present lists, again, cover as many or as few categories as you like. :)

Hi,

- Canterbury Scene: Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom (1974)
While I love RW, in the Canterbury scene, CARAVAN should be the flag bearer ... though some other groups (later) took over the mantle. RW kinda fits better in the experimental area, for his taste in mixing anything under the zoo! GONG is a good pick, although I don't look at GONG as Canterbury much, and probably a wider mix of music, that defies a lot of descriptions.

- Eclectic Prog: Van der Graaf Generator - Pawn Hearts (1971)
I prefer the period right after this, all the way to GODBLUFF/STILL LIFE ... much cleaner and stronger.

- Krautrock: Dom - Edge of Time (1972)
I'm not sure I could let go of Amon Duul 2's Dance of the Lemmings

- Prog Folk: Spirogyra - Bells, Boots and Shambles (1973)
While I like Spirogyra a lot, in this area I would pick The Incredible String Band ... and EARTH SPAN is just one of the rarest treats ever ... sadly a band that is not appreciated because they stood up for "poetry", not rock music or popular music per se. Maybe the ISB does not even fit in Prog Folk.

- Psychedelic/Space Rock: Message - From Books and Dreams (1973)
I'm not sure I would pick this band over GROBSCHNITT ... and specially SOLAR MUSIC. To my ears, Message, was interesting, but not that great music wise. This is a tough area, as I would probably like to put on Guru Guru here in their days with Ax Gernrich ... which is not only psychedelic, it is downright crazy and when it comes to spacy, this was better than Jimi! At least the music made more sense than the "songs" that Jimi did!

- Zeuhl: Magma - Kobaïa (1970)
Probably Mekanik or Kohntarkosz ... both of which have been massive staples in their live concerts. I think your choice is indicative of something so new and off kilter, that most of us could not get our ears tuned to it ... but with Mekanik and Kohntarkosz, this changed and we knew this was far out and serious.

I would have a hard time making comments on a lot of the other stuff. Nice list!!! Check that ... very nice list!!!

Thanks, Pedro. I imagine that I'll come up with a few more lists of personal favourites from the PA categories, and hopefully some more members will too. Definitely I'm not going for what I think is most significant or suitable to the category it's in; just hoping we can share those album that are meaningful to us across the PA categories where we have albums we like.

- Caravan, Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North are three of the most quintessential Canterbury Scene bands to me. Caravan is particularly popular and it was the first Canterbury Scene band I discovered as a child with In the Land of Grey and Pink.

- I have grown to like the post-Pawn Hearts albums much more, but it is The Least We Can DO..., H to He..., and Pawn hearts that have meant the most to me. And a "Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" is the bee's knees (or would be if it was "A Plague of Beehouse Keepers" or just bees).

- Love ADII's "Dance of the Lemmings" too, although I turn to Yeti more. Could have happily gone with either of those. Love lots of Krautrock.

- I really like The Incredible String Band. The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter is a personal favourite from ISB. I did a track poll some time back and chose "A Very Cellular Song" from it.

- Solar Music is very nice, but that Message album (included in Psychedelic/Space Rock) is very special to me. Grobschnitt is actually included in Symphonic Prog at PA and I am choosing personal favourites, and asking others to do so, based on what's in the categories at PA whether best suited to that category or not.

- Magma's first is an utterly remarkable double-album debut to me. I would call MDK the most quintessential album of Zeuhl. I prefer versions of MDK live to the studio album, and went with studio albums for all of my choices. At one time MDK was my favourite, but the debut is the studio album I would wish to keep if I could only keep one Magma. I adore it, and despite liking Magma throughout its career, they never bettered it for me.

Well, at least it does have Neo-Psych and Neo-Space Rock qualities. Seems a pretty slack addition for the slacker rock of Duster. ;)

I made multiple lists and could make many more with the categories I love best (I am avoiding re-mentioning albums already listed and avoiding bands/artists that I already listed). I don't treat it as definitive, but for me there often are a handful of albums that come to mind that I would like to listen to at any given moment, or I might think of the one I most recently played, or the first I like that comes alphabetically. Often it is just the first to spring to my mind. Trying to get a general idea across PA categories of where one's interests lie here. If it's too hard choosing one you love from the categories you most like, maybe you'd fare better with the categories you don't like so much. One can make as many lists as one likes.

Can be interesting and nice also to hear about what people like from, and think about, other people's lists as well.

The same applies to me too. I could easily choose a hundred favourite albums from each prog sub-genre - apart from Avant Prog, obviously. Tongue

So I suggest going for the categories you least like. For instance, you did mention liking Samla Mammas Manna's Maltid, right? For the others you could choose alphabetically by band/artist and, say, the earliest release or the fourth. I find it so easy to come up with strategies that work for me. As long as others understand the methodology. Being creative with that to me could be a big part of the fun. And love to see your Zeuhl, Post-Rock, Exp./Post-Metal and Tech/Extreme Metal picks.

Of course people should do what they are comfortable with here. :) Just some ideas for this discussion forum.

I don;t want to take away from other people's wonderful lists, I know these aren't that easy to put together (well, not without practice ;)) and the effort is hugely appreciated, but here's another of mine:

Canterbury Scene: Picchio dal Pozzo - Picchio dal Pozzo (1976)
Crossover Prog: Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs (2015)
Eclectic Prog: King Crimson - Lizard (1970)
Experimental/Post Metal: Uboa - The Sky May Be (2018)
Heavy Prog: Atomic Rooster - Death Walks Behind You (1970) (was mentioned already in this topic, but had planned for this next)
Indo-Prog/Raga Rock: Satwa - Satwa (1973)
Jazz Rock/Fusion: Dedalus - Dedalus (1973)
Krautrock: Faust - So Far (1972)
Neo-Prog: unsure
Post-Rock/Math Rock: Bohren & der Club of Gore - Sunset Mission (2000)
Prog Folk: Perry Leopold - Christian Lucifer (recorded 1973, released 1999)
Progressive Electronic: Igor Wakhévitch - Hathor (1973)
Progressive Metal: unsure
Psychedelic/Space Rock: Far East Family Band - Parallel World (1976)
RIO/Avant-Prog: Universe Zero - Heresis (1979)
Rock Progressivo Italiano: Osanna - Palepoli (1973)
Symphonic Prog: Ange - Au-delà du délire (1974)
Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: unsure
Zeuhl: Bondage Fruit - Bondage Fruit I (1994)
Various Artists: unsure
Prog Related: William Sheller - Lux Aeterna (1972)
Proto-Prog: Silver Apples - Silver Apples (1968)

I might try to combine all our lists into one, or just the first list by each as I have multiple. It takes effort to make these and I do worry when I make topics that people's efforts will not be noticed or recognised (and I don't always respond, mostly because I find social interactions a little uncomfortable often). At least re-posting them might give some more visibility.

Hi,

Again ... nice addon list. And tough all the way ... I really am not a good one for choosing A over B and vice versa ... specially as I like them both equally. I tend to not send my thoughts and feelings into the area of a dichotomy, in the arts, as some of the things are so different and have touches that really show its talent and ability.

I remember getting this album, my first FAUST album, and the only thing I could take from it, was the very obvious goofing around with the sounds on a synth and on tape .. Guy Guden had done a lot of studio crazy stuff which he used in his own shows on stage (wrote and directed!) which kinda took the different, weird touch out of it all and brought it into the reality ... however, sound effect fooling around with starts, and BELONGS to, Spike Milligan and The Goons ... but I'm not sure many of us can get into the sound effects used at the time, on radio, to make a story come alive ... no one has EVER done it better than The Goons and later PDQ Bach that did it live on stage, unlike the studio heavy FAUST thing. There are some things in it that are recognizable, if you have an ear tuned to PDQ Bach (folks don't even realize that Peter Schikele is by very far one of the most progressive of folks, mainly because it is comedy ... and he does it live with local musicians) ... but many sound effects used there are heard with FAUST ... and the bicycle wheel, the tube in the air, and many of these sounds were all of a sudden in FAUST's album, different, and not as acoustic, of course. While, FAUST's use, for me, was more on the fun side of things, PDQ included it in a lot of his music and the far out interpretations of classical music that ... progressive folks don't usually seem to enjoy ... like humor can not be here at all ... FAUST was fun, but not very "artistic" in my book. And in that big K-rock special, seeing one of the guys just hitting a cement drum to get the sound as it turned ... kinda showed, right there, what FAUST was about right from the start.

Psychedelic/Space Rock: Far East Family Band - Parallel World (1976)
I got this, and we played it on Space Pirate Radio, just like we did a lot of Japanese things in those days, mainly because it was produced by Klaus Schulze ... and while a nice listen, it was OK in my book ... I never thought of it as Psychedelic since a lot of the touches in it were eastern music bits and pieces, to make it more "universal" and less westernized, and it was a good listen, but ... honestly? ... produced by KS, I thought that this was going to be a real TRIP ... and in many ways, it wasn't. Better considered as Space Rock, I suppose, but definitely not psychedelic at all ... unless we think of golks being ripped and stoned as such ... which is crazy ... by that time, even KS was clean and he had stated to his fan club that it interfered with his ability to control the music when played live and he would not remember which/what was being used and worked on.

Symphonic Prog: Ange - Au-delà du délire (1974)
If I had to choose one album that is for me, and truly special, this is the one ... and this band, all the way to TOME VI (their 6th album) ... was fantastic and had all the wonderful features of a true actor singing it ... not (like Meatloaf said was an actor that could sing!!!) ... and the emotions and touches the band worked on right from the start were incredible and continued for at least 15 to 20 more years. The version of these recently done by the brother that was the main keyboard player (not the singer) ... is still really good, but it's really hard to let go of that earlier touch ... and I wish someone would remix and remaster that ... though I seriously doubt they can improve anything ... the touches that we think someone would come up with, were already there by the beauty of the work and its interpretation, and I don't think that mechanics in the studio can improve the real thing!

Zeuhl: Bondage Fruit - Bondage Fruit I (1994)
Of all the bands in the 1999 Festival in SF, this band, and Buckethead, were the two that didn't do it for me ... I'm not sure why, and have to go back and listen to their material in the 1990's to get a better idea, but it was actually a nice performance, if not way too much guitar centered, when in terms of Zeuhl and its work, it is less on an instrument and more on the totality of the work ... something is amiss here, that I need to revisit one day. I never thought of it as Zeuhl on that day, as I was too busy being the photographer for the event.

^ Just to note that I'm just choosing these based on what category they are in and not judging whether I think they fit the category well, and asking the same of others in their lists of favourites. That above is my fifth list in this topic, while avoiding repeating acts in my lists. Anyone can make as many lists as they like. Bondage Fruit is more Zeuhl flavoured I would say, and how much depends on the track and album. Some of it is very Zeuhl to my ear. I'm happy with it in Zeuhl and there are those Zeuhlish rhythms. It's actually a pretty eclectic band with jazz, folk and world music, avant prog, from gentle to not.... Can be beautiful. I do suggest listening to their debut. I find it to be a wonderful album. They released an album this year, by the way.

I would place that album in Zeuhl, by the way.

With Far East Family Band, I agree it's more on the Space Rock side of the Psych & Space category at PA than Psych. I find real beauty in the album. I just adore this, for instance:

What has been said of my tastes commonly is that I often gravitate towards atmospheric music. I also often do like groove...

^^ Thanks Mira. It's fun for me to share and see people lists.

From your list I especially dig National Health, The Origin of My Depression, Third Ear Band, Tago Mago, Zeit, Maledetti, Kobaïa, Low and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Anfd have really liked The Power and the Glory, Frances The Mute, and Uncle Meat too. I should give that Mastodon another spin sometime. I used to like it, then I didn't, so much depends on mood. A Uboa album would have been my first pick for Experimental/Post Metal. I knew she'd been added a while ago but I had not guessed that category. Impossible Light is one of my top albums of this year. And I'm a fan of otay:onii (love her album Míng Míng) who features on the album. Rather wish we had a category dedicated to certain experimental industrial, noise, darkwave and ambient forms (but am not really pushing for it). :)

^ And thanks someone_else (will edit in my faves of your list later).

EDIT: From your list (in order of mention), I adore Gong's You, Swans' The Beggar, Klaus Schulze's Mirage, Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here, Henry Cow's In Praise of Learning, Franco Battiato's Sulle Corde di Aries and Magma's Köhntarkösz. Really like Tubular Bells, part the Second, Until the Geese Are Gone, Thick as a Brick and Who's Next. had to remind myself of the Alquin album and loving it! I really like various John Cale albums and should check that one.

Thanks so much for all of the lists. I know it can be a real challenge and take some time, so the effort is very much appreciated.    More already have tried this than I was expecting. I find it interesting to see the lists, compare lists, and like to see what I know and like and don't know from the lists. This can give me rather broader sense of some of the tastes and interests in our community/ specific members.

I'll mention what i like from each list. Lorenzo's, great to see you around again!, is to be continued (a strategy I was thinking of suggesting for some), but I truly love every album mentioned in his list thus far.

With Nikola's list, I particulary love Third, Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Ege Bamyasi, Ágætis Byrjun, First Utterance, Zeit, Ummagumma, Freak Out!, Zarathustra, and Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh. Really like Relayer, and Aja is very good...

With Christian's list, I love The National, The Dreaming (you turned me more onto that album and now it is one of my very favourite albums), Holger Czukay - Movies (such a wonderful album, really, really love it), Rubycon, Ummagumma, Berlin and revolver. And I like Phlegm, Heavy Horses and Infernal Machina a lot. I should listen that Association PC live as I like the band a lot. I don't know Tarentel or Cilio at all that I can recall. Will try to remember to remedy that at some time.

With Samuel's list: I know we share a lot of musical loves in common, and so interesting to see as many album names I am unfamiliar with (means more for me to check out). :) I do love Le Poison Qui Rend Fou, Weidorje , Spiral and The Soft Parade. I know the Mastodon quite well and should listen again.

Again thanks all, and I hope more will try this challenge. It's "a favoured album", it doesn't need to be one's favourite. I know lots of us would know and love huge amounts of albums from our favoured categories.

^ Thanks Lorenzo, I have liked all of those albums (well, I know the Shawn Phillips less than the other albums). While I followed what's in PA's categories for my lists regardless of how well I think it fits there, I will say that I think of Area as more JR/F and Avant Prog than an RPI category act (RPI is kind of a strange category in various ways... rather too eclectic perhaps, and unlike Krautrock with finding bands outside Germany and Canterbury, finding bands outside Canterbury, all in that category are from Italy so it seems less of styles, influence, or specific movements...). I think it used to be in JRF? I could be wrong. And the two Family albums I have I think of as on the Proto-Prog side. Fine with the band in Eclectic as I do think of those as Prog Art Rock too with Psych qualities.

EDIT, on a related note: Some here have said that Proto-Prog bands are not Prog (and that Prog Related bands are not Prog) but to me it depends on the album, song, and there is no distinct dividing line between Prog, non-Prog, embryonic Prog and full-fledged Prog. And sometimes it just comes down to the individuals interpretation and parameters. How some PA members defined the band category-wise does not define the band let alone the individual albums by a band, and of course we can't use multi-tags or deal with the albums individually.   But this edit digresses....

Been meaning to respond to this thread for a few days now. Also, to limit myself a bit, I’ll name only albums from the 21st century. It also avoids repeating some of the bigger names but made a couple of categories difficult for me.

It seems I mainly listen to RPI and Krautrock from the 70s. I had difficulty selecting albums. With Krautrock, it’s funny because I feel like I hear a lot of influence in a fair number of current bands that I listen to.

And I have nothing for Indo-Prog/Raga Rock. There’s not much to begin with and I don’t know how much there is from the 21st century.

Now in alphabetical subgenre order.

Canterbury Scene: De Lorians – De Lorians (2019)

Crossover Prog: Bent Knee – Shiney Eyed Babies (2014)

Eclectic Prog: Birds and Buildings – Bantam to Behemoth (2008)

Experimental/Post Metal: Tool – Lateralus (2001)

Heavy Prog: Porcupine Tree – In Absentia (2002)

Jazz Rock/Fusion: Art Metal – Vyakhyan-Kar (2007)

Krautrock: Hedersleben – The Fall of Chronopolis (2015)

Neo-Prog: IQ – Frequency (2009)

Post Rock/Math Rock: Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000)

Prog Folk: North Sea Radio Orchestra – I A Moon (2011)

Progressive Electronic: Radio Massacre International – Emissaries (2005)

Progressive Metal: Riverside – Anno Domini High Definition (2009)

Psychedelic/Space Rock: 35007 – Liquid (2002)

RIO/Avant-Prog: Far Corner – Risk (2018)

Rock Progressivo Italiano: Unreal City – Il Paese del Tramonto (2015)

Symphonic Prog: Discipline – To Shatter All Accord (2011)

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal: Cynic – Traced in Air (2008)

Zeuhl: Zwoyld – 200 000 (2014)

^ Far Corner's Risk is very good. Far Corner's Endangered was one of my fave albums in the 2007 Collab Album of the Year choices.

^^ Thanks for the list, George; much appreciated. I like your approach. Good way to narrow things down and I do like see the modern era getting attention.

The two particular desert island disks for me from your list are Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven and I a Moon (those are favourites amongst my favourite albums) but I also really like the Zwoyld, Bent Knee and Far Corner. De Lorians was one of my favourites of its year (but kind of forgotten it now). Oh, and almost missed mentioning it carelessly, Bantam to Behemoth is a great album.

I first thought of Susanne Sundfør's Ten Love Songs for Crossover but you had already mentioned that album :) I'd be curious to know what you'd make of that Banda do Casaco album (unfortunately the official stream sounds worse than the original CD remaster). The Soft Parade is genuinely my favourite album, I never understood the low ratings.
I generally find the Metal genres tiresome, the albums are often long and lack dynamics (not to mention the crushed cymbals and double kick drums I find unpleasant), but it's not really the case of that Mastodon album. Still, I'd get rid of a couple of tracks and I can only listen to it as background music.

^^ Thanks, Will. From your list I particularly like Animals followed by Free Hand. Also like the Todd Rundgren and Jethro Tull. I checked our Romantic Warrior not so long ago again and found much more enjoyment in the album. Sometimes it just does depend on my mood, what I'm most into at any given time, and what particular music from an album catches my ear.

Samuel. That Susanne Sundfør is a wonderful album. I remember not liking The Soft Parade very much when I first heard it (my brother had it in his collection) but it really grew on me. As for the Banda do Casaco album, I have been listening to that for some time (over 20 minutes in now) and am really digging it and intrigued. I will continue listening. There's quite a lot to it in terms of variety/ variation, and it would take multiple spins to properly absorb it all, I feel. What I'm hearing now is bliss. Wonderful album! The stream is not the best quality vinyl rip, but that doesn't bother me. Thanks so much for bringing it to my attention. :)

^ & ^^ Thanks Jared and Jason (aka bender99). You both share three not covered categories (Krautrock, RIO/Avant and Zeuhl), both have Caravan and IQ (albeit different albums) and share Led Zep's Physical Graffiti.

^^ Jared. What I find rather interesting is how people can favour different categories -- I love plenty of albums from all the categories you left out and those are some of my particular favourite categories for music -- and yet still find shared commonalities in other categories. From your list, I adore Pawn Hearts and would say that it is on the avant-prog side of things). And I also really love the Tangerine Dream, that Gryphon album, the Led Zep choice, and I like the Caravan, Oldfield, and Genesis. And I really like Colosseum. Kind of surprised, or whould I have known?, that you don't have any RPI. I would have thought you would have known and liked PFM's Per un Amico, maybe Le Orme's Felona e Sorona, maybe Celeste....

^ Jason, I especially love Physical Graffiti and Wish YOU Were Here (especially for Shine On which remains as magical as when I first heard it at the age of about 12) from your list. I also really like the Caravan, PFM, Abbey Road, and that Rush album was one of my favourite albums as a teenager. And I like the Jethro Tull. And when I went to Australia Hemispheres was the first album I ordered from a store since I missed it. I used to adore that album; still part of my DNA.

Thanks so much for all the lists. Got considerably more than I expected and every one has treasures per my tastes.

Now I think I’ll go with an all 70’s or earlier list now. An overabundance of choices for the main subgenres and really struggled selecting the “one” for some of these, while several subgenres have yet to begin, eliminating any selection of the neo, metal, post kind. Again, I pass on Indo/Raga. I suppose I’ll do an 80s and 90s list next.

Canterbury Scene: Khan – Space Shanty (1972)

Crossover Prog: FM – Black Noise (1977)

Eclectic Prog: Bubu – Anabelas (1978)

Heavy Prog: Captain Beyond – Captain Beyond (1972)

Jazz Rock/Fusion: Mahavishnu Orchestra – The Inner Mounting Flame (1971)

Krautrock: Amon Duül II – Yeti (1970)

Prog Folk: Jethro Tull – Thick as a Brick (1972)

Progressive Electronic: Klaus Schulze – Timewind (1975)

Psychedelic/Space Rock: Pink Floyd – Animals (1977)

RIO/Avant-Prog: Frank Zappa – The Grand Wazoo (1972)

Rock Progressivo Italiano: il Balletto di Bronzo – Ys (1972)

Symphonic Prog: Genesis – Foxtrot (1972)

Zeuhl: Magma – Kobaïa (1970)

George, I know all of that list (helps being 70s). That was my Magma choice and I adore Yeti. Timewind, Anabelas, Space Shanty, Ys and Animals are some other faves of mine.

Here's a short live albums list from me. I just listened to this Agitation Free album recently and really like it. I left the released years off because I didn't feel like researching recorded date right now.

Thanks Greg.. Big smile

I suppose my issues are firstly that I'm just not that adventurous; I've had a tendency to know what I like and like what I know and stick to it, so I could give you loads of Symph, Crossover, Neo, Heavy & Prog Metal; but in that I'm not really alone.

Of the 6 blanks, I think Italian Prog would be the area I should explore, as it is most likely to yield fruit.. of course I've heard bits of PFM and Le Orme, which sound fine enough to me, but I'm not sure if I've heard an entire album by either?

Krautrock is a concept I must confess, I don't really understand... of course, I like Eloy, Triumvirat, Grobschnitt, Nektar (I know they are British) Anyone's Daughter, some Novalis and Jane's debut among others... but none of them are under Krautrock, even though I have seen them labelled as such elsewhere (and I suppose they must be in a broader context).. but I have tried Can and it didn't do much for me?

Given the bands I have listed above, could you give me a guitar/keys driven Krautrock recommendation I could try??

Thanks... Star

Btw: I like the idea of listing a Live album for each section! I must admit, I was dubious about putting Colosseum Live down, as I thought it was a bit of a cheat, so I'll change my JR/F choice to Birds Of Fire, but the Colosseum album is one of my very favourite live albums... it absolutely smokes from start to finish.. Evil Smile

^^ Thanks FL. Morte Macabre's was my first pick from the Heavy Prog category too. Also Adore Red, love the Heldon and really like various others in the list. Kind of a funny idea, I guess, depending on perspective. I do like funny! Even if I rarely manage it the way I want. ;) I like to see people tastes across categories, as well as comparing lists. Also kind of interesting to see people's approaches, who feels comfortable enough (and makes the time) to come up with a list and who does not.

Another way would be to check out the top albums per category using the top 100 or top 250 albums chart and checking each category.

I know for some it is too hard to choose one, but I find there are many strategies to limit that, like what was the last album you remember hearing and liking from the category. Ones you have spun the most times. One's current mood. Limiting decade or year etc. I doubt many of us would have many liked from every category at PA.

-------------------------------

Jared; nice on the lives. Like the Rush, love that Renaissance live.

As for Krautrock, it is a broad brush and PA does limit what it puts in there.   Can took me ages to really get into. My first Krautrock (as PA categorises it) love was Agitation Free, which I suggest trying at some time.

From the Krautrock category, I suggest Jean-Jacques Kravetz's Kravetz from 1972.

Then Sperrmüll is quite like early Eloy if you can enjoy that period.

You might like some Mythos and Electric Sandwich. The debut by Mythos is pretty well known and I think it might get too out there for you, but here is the less-known Strange Guys from 1978:

Logan, yes, I noticed you picked Morte Macabre, too, one of the best albums of the 90's! So at least we completely agree on one album! Embarrassed

While creating the list I had some surprising moments. For example, in Heavy Prog I was looking for Opeth, only to find out they were listed in Tech/Extreme. And then I found Morte Macabre was there, although I thought it was in Eclectic, so I voted that. Then in Progressive Metal I looked for Leprous, only to find they were also in Tech/Extreme. And in Tech/Extreme I was looking for Scale the Summit, only to find them in Progressive Metal, what a mess! LOL

About Krautrock: I agree that the concept I do not understand either. Also the term 'Krautrock' I do not like, because 'Kraut' was used in a derogatory way to depict a German.
I simply scrolled through the list and selected the album I like most, without thinking about the sense of the category.

Jared, I do not know what you mean with 'guitar/keys driven Krautrock' but how about my selection Uhrsprung by Oktober? The sound is very similar to symphonic prog of the 70's in a somewhat Genesis-like style. Check also my http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=2604507" rel="nofollow - review about the album.

I love all those although Eloy Live with the mighty Jurgen Rosenthal on drums would be my pick for that band. Glad you love that TD album, my favourite live TD album as well although the full unedited version of Logos is great as well. With Rush I tend to go with Different Stages which sounds a bit heavier but I still own my original vinyl copy of Exit Stage Left. It seemed at the time all the Rush you could ever need. Anathema's live album is a fantastic document of this wonderful band. You want predicatable? I have Weather Systems - Ocean Without A Shore Number One for the year Smile. IQ are always great, love the shorter versions of The Last Human Gateway as well as a more (for me) polished versions of Paul Menel era songs No Love Lost and Human Nature. Grand stuff indeed.

Thanks Rich...

Eloy: Reincarnation is a surprisingly wonderful album for an artist in his late autumn of musical life... though I love the vibrancy of Live (1978) too

TD: I could easily have picked Ricochet, Encore, Logos, Pergamon, Poland or even Live Miles... I really enjoy them all.

Rush: I just love the song selection; it was them at their most interesting period, even tho the production is a tad muddy.

Anathema: A classic example of when the live album becomes greater than the sum of the studio parts.. they are the very best sort.

IQ: I don't listen to much Neo these days, so I'm not best placed to judge, but this to me will always be the best Neo live album out there.

Thanks. Yes, find the classifications can be more than a bit confusing. My first choice from the Neo-Prog category, Duster, doesn't sound at all like Neo-Prog to me... sounds like Neo-Space Rock/ Neopsych, and I would not have expected Uboa to be in a metal category (I would like a new category for experimental/ industrial and related music). Not having genre multi-tagging and not being able to label albums is an unfortunate limitation of this site. Of course the teams try to do do the best they reasonably can given the limitations of this site and the voluntary workload they can take on. I have not liked the term Krautrock either, but it has become widely accepted.

It's a remarkable album to my ears. I'll be looking into more Portuguese folk related music, and keep up with the studies and playing! I wish that I were more of a musician than I am.

None of those are in my collection either, but I do stream a lot. None of them are personal favourites, but they seemed to fit your "ask" fairly well. For a better group, you could try Agitation Free (I just thought it might get too out there for you) which I mentioned but did not include specific music.

I should started with the primo stuff. There is way more to Krautrock of course than Can.

Formentera Lady's recommendation to you I am now listening to... :)
