Jean-Luc Ponty has been Living in the USA for over fifty years now, so that makes him an American citizen in my eyes. The same goes for Lalo Schifrin, who was born in Italy but moved to Los Angeles in 1963 and became an American citizen in 1969. Smile

The way I see it, about 1/3rd of albums in the poll are actual classic US jazz, but whatever. Voted for Miles Smiles. Here's an attemnt on a personal top 20:

Andrew Hill - Compulsion
Pete La Roca - Turkish Women at the Bath
Philip Cohran and the Artistic Heritage Ensemble - On the Beach
Pharoah Sanders - Tauhid
Herbie Mann - Impressions of the Middle East*
Harold Vick - The Caribbean Suite
Phil Yost - Bent City
Chico Hamilton - The Dealer
Miles Davis Quintet - Miles Smiles
Afro-Blues Quintet + 1 - Discovery 3
John Coltrane - Expression
Duke Ellington - Duke Ellington's Far East Suite
Miles Davis - Sorcerer
Jackie McLean - Action
Sam Rivers - Contours
McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
Horace Silver Quintet / Sextet - The Jody Grind
Don Cherry - Symphony for Improvisers
Herbie Hancock - Blow-Up
Lee Morgan - Cornbread

*you didn't include the actually very worthwhile Herbie release of the year

^ I could've easily picked fifty albums for this poll in what is arguably the best ever year for music.
Herbie Hancock's Blow-Up soundtrack was in the previous US Jazz poll for 1966. Thumbs Up

These polls are for fun. I don't understand why some members just complain and pick them apart. It's a headscratcher.

If you don't like the poll don't participate.

I can never hope to please everyone all of the time with my album choices in these polls (especially when it comes to jazz), but I'd be just as happy to participate in David's polls with his own choice of albums. As you say, it's all a bit of fun at the end of the day and there'll be another fun poll along tomorrow. Smile

Anyway, these are my Top 5 choices for this poll...

1. Burt Bacharach - Reach Out
2. Lalo Schifrin - Music from Mission Impossible
3. The Bob Crewe Generation - Music to Watch Girls By
4. Henry Mancini - Encore! More of the Concert Sound of Henry Mancini
5. Quincy Jones - In the Heat of the Night

I voted for Miles Davis Sorcerer over Miles Smiles. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to jazz from that year. One I like not in the list is Tony Scott & The Indonesian All Stars' Djanger Bali.

I love this:

When did Zappa become classic jazz?

I like Tony Scott too, so I wish I'd had room to include him in the poll, but here he is belatedly. Smile

Actually, I may be getting confused with Tom Scott, which is easily done at my age. Embarrassed

^ And I might easily confuse that Tony Scott with Ridley Scott's brother Tony if I did not know better and maybe sometimes even when I do. I may still be a young pup in my early 50s, but I have the brain age of someone in an advanced state of decay

Nice, if it were my poll I likely would only included album per artist (or maybe two) for more variety; however, because you chose to listen to full discographies in chronological order, that strategy would not make so much sense for you.

By the way polls are for fun, to me way more. It's about sharing a piece of yourself, exploring music with others, and connecting with others. Music is such an emotional journey and so linked to identity. Music is magic.

^Love that Tony Scott album, but had it filed as "world" so it didn't come up in my search:)

I never said I didn't like the poll. Its about my favorite kind of music, so I'm immediately interested. Unlike those who don't like people arguing about politics, or fail to see the point of negative threads/topics - I comment on the actual content. I know you don't like, or care for my tone, but observing and commenting that very little of a poll's content that claims to be about Classic US Jazz, is infact Classic US Jazz, is a natural way for me to participate. I'm usually as "brutally honest" in real life as well.

If someone made a poll titled "Classic 1970's Prog" and its options were mainly bands such as Boston, Journey, Foreigner and REO Speedwagon, I would have commented in a similar way. That's just the awful kind of person I am I guess.
