Anyway, I think if I had to choose the second-best, I’d lean towards Ni. It’s an album I absolutely love, of course, but it’s a very uneven record, with some tracks being much better than others. On the other hand, Angherr Shisspa is also a very diverse album, but it maintains a consistently high level, and every track is excellent. For me, there isn’t a single track below nine points.
I’d recommend starting with Angherr Shisspa or Dhorimviskha. My issue with the latter is the production; I don’t like it at all. Everything sounds overly compressed. If you enjoy it, I’d suggest moving on to Ni and then the other two. Nivraym is an outstanding album, but it’s extremely intense. However, if you liked the others, I don’t think it’ll be a problem.

I do know them all, and that is my favourite now. Angherr shisspa is the first I heard when it was still quite new and I think that was my album of 2005 at the time. I loved that album and quickly got the earlier ones. Each of those has been my favourite Koenji Hyakkei at one time. I pretty music stopped listening to the band for considerable years, and when I tried it again I found it too noise and abrasive for me. I'm more of gentle pastoral folky guy at heart than a brutal music lover. Zed would cleanse the world of brutals in the name of Zardoz, by the way. In recent years I have come to appreciate much harsher music again, including noisy dissonant music and just plain noise (I expect that some who know my tastes quite well would say that that never stopped). With Dhorimviskha I have come back to Koenjihaykkei, and the craziness of that album just appeals to me the most now. I don't know the first two but I love the last three. A favorite though? I started with Angherr Shisspa back in the Naughties, was blown away (but didn't necessarily like it: it's amazing but everyday background music? no.). During the Pandemic I tried Nivram and was blown away and LOVED it. More recently I tried Dhorimviskha and thought it much more engaging and perfected than even Angherr (though, somehow, Angherr remains my highest rated album of the three). Guess it's time to go back and discover the first two! It's really hard to choose one over the others but I think the sound and polish of Dhorimviskha probably wins out for me (though perhaps it's due more to a factor of how my ear and brain has been trained as to what to expect from the band). ------------- Drew Fisher https://progisaliveandwell.blogspot.com/ |
